Consider this, if the name ain\u2019t right, what else might be wrong? If a guy calls a jab \u201ca fisty puncher\u201d and is oblivious to the word \u201cjab\u201d we\u2019d suspect something was a bit awry in the boxing research, would we not?)<\/em>\n\nTo the Shoulder!\n\n<!--more-->\n[dfads params='groups=292&amp;limit=1&amp;orderby=random']\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"small-12 medium-11 medium-centered large-10 large-centered columns\">\n<div class=\"flex-video\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe id=\"ytplayer\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P64CTf41_tI?controls=0&amp;fs=0&amp;rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=0&amp;iv_load_policy=3\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"small-12 medium-10 medium-centered large-11 large-centered columns\">\n\t[dfads params='groups=290&amp;limit=1&amp;orderby=random']<\/div>\nWe\u2019ve got three broad ways to use it (Slams, Butts, &amp; Grinds) and essentially only two attack paths (Inward &amp; Upward.)\n\nFirst let\u2019s talk a drill that will allow you to find your power with the shoulder and then we\u2019ll traipse into specifics.\n\nWe will reverse engineer the Shoulder Slam from a strike you likely know inside and out: The Hammer Hook.\n\nFor those not proud proprietors of a fearsome Hammer Hook, read on\u2026\n\n[dfads params='groups=292&amp;limit=1&amp;orderby=random']\n<h4 class=\"red\">THE HAMMER HOOK<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"blog-lists\">\n \t<li>You raise the lead elbow parallel to the floor.<\/li>\n \t<li>The fist essentially stays where it was as if rotating in front of you on a ball-and-socket joint.<\/li>\n \t<li>The elbow has a strict 90-degree bend locking the arm into one fused piece of bone.<\/li>\n \t<li>Hinging and pivoting on the ball of the rear-foot\u2026<\/li>\n \t<li>Fire a pivot from the toes of the lead foot turning the entire body as one unit to the inside: shoulders, chest, and hips all turn as one.<\/li>\n \t<li>The entire body as one fused unit drives the fused-elbow hammer hook home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nNext\u2026\n\nTake a step closer to the bag so that you are in closed-quarters clinch range and hit the following.\n<div class=\"small-12 medium-10 medium-centered large-11 large-centered columns\">\n\t[dfads params='groups=290&amp;limit=1&amp;orderby=random']<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"red\">SLAM THE DOOR DRILL<\/h4>\nI find the following drill, leaving the punch itself out helps seat the skill.\n<ul class=\"blog-lists\">\n \t<li>I want you to think of your upper-body as a door.<\/li>\n \t<li>Your rear foot as the door hinge.<\/li>\n \t<li>I want you to slam this door (your chest) by\u2026<\/li>\n \t<li>Driving off the toes of the lead foot.<\/li>\n \t<li>Drive HARD slamming the door\/chest with maximum viciousness.<\/li>\n \t<li>Use the fused-body mechanics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nNow, once you have slamming the door down, you will have both a more fearsome hammer hook in your possession and a powerful shoulder slam.\n\n[dfads params='groups=292&amp;limit=1&amp;orderby=random']\n<h4 class=\"red\">THE SHOULDER BUTT<\/h4>\nButting with the shoulder is, again, performed from the closed-quarters clinch.\n\nWhereas the shoulder slam is a strike of power and travels an inward path, the butt is a short choppier shot.\n<ul class=\"blog-lists\">\n \t<li>Think of giving short choppy inward pops from a loose striking shoulder.<\/li>\n \t<li>Often 2-3 in a row are ideal.<\/li>\n \t<li>Shoulder butts are often used to wear on an opponent, or set-up better striking angles or insertion angles for an under-hook clinch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nYou can also deliver the shoulder butt at an upward angle.\n<ul class=\"blog-lists\">\n \t<li>Keep the same loose shoulder and deliver 2-3 good pops to aid whatever you are setting up.<\/li>\n \t<li>Resist the urge to \u201cpower\u201d the shot by extending the legs. This will rise your base and render you a bit \u201clight\u201d making you ripe for sweeping, turning, or shooting short takedowns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"small-12 medium-10 medium-centered large-11 large-centered columns\">\n\t[dfads params='groups=290&amp;limit=1&amp;orderby=random']<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"red\">SHOULDER GRINDS<\/h4>\nGrinds are most often used by grapplers on the horizontal plane, but when against the quasi-horizontal vertical of an upright fence, wall, parked car, one can use the grind if on the outside of the vertical press  to crunch chin, jaw, and teeth as you wear out the body with the hands or set the legs up to topple the opponent\/quarry to the mat.\n\nIn a nutshell, the shoulder is a fearsome addition to your street and MMA game.
