This is especially true for big guys with long arms who know that landing one good punch can end the fight. This weeks tip is about neutralizing the haymaker, taking control, and ending the fight quickly.

Although the haymaker can be powerful, it is very easily avoided or neutralized with a small amount of training. The key is stepping in and taking all the power away from the punch by intercepting the attackers arm with your forearm. By blocking his arm the punch becomes worthless. But you can't win a fight by blocking, that's why it's crucial for you to strike him at the very same moment that you block his punch.

If you block his punch then go for a strike he may have enough time to throw another punch, or attack you in any number of other way. If you strike WHILE you block he won't have enough time to launch another attack.

At this point you have taken the offense away from him and changed the entire dynamic of the fight. He thought he was attacking you, now suddenly he is on the receiving end of the fight. As Mark demonstrates in the clip above you can throw a straight punch to the solar plexus while you execute the block.

But you can't stop there, if you really want to take control of the fight you must follow up immediately with more punishing strikes to prevent him from regaining the offensive. In the scenario from the video, Mark shows how you can follow up with an ear strike (which will temporarily throw off his balance), but there are many other options. The key is acting quickly. You could also swap out the solar plexus strike with a throat strike, your choice.

Once you've successfully gained control you can follow up with a shot to the chin, while holding the back of his neck or his hair. This gives you total control of his head. Now you can easily take him down using the hook step shown in the video.

As he goes down you have two options, first you can immediately run and escape to safety. Your second option is to follow him to the ground to inflict more damage or control him. If you are by yourself and can easily escape I suggest running and escaping at the earliest possible moment. But if you are with loved ones or feel that the situation calls for containing the attacker while others escape first, you can use the brutal follow up strikes shown in the video.

For more of Mark Parra's quick learn fight moves click here.

If you’ve been in or seen many street fights you know that the haymaker (or looping right hand punch) is the default attack for many people.
