Lesson One of the Self Defense Mini Clinic

Each lesson of this course includes videos of highly effective, street proven fighting moves that are easy to learn and simple to use.

Each installment will also include some seriously important fighting information that has taken 20 years of interviews and research with dozens of the world’s most notorious street fighters, bar bouncers, law enforcement officers, and soldiers to put together.

This stuff is solid gold. These lessons are boiled down from a 100 page book I wrote on how to fight and win. I’ve taken the most valuable life-saving lessons from it at put it into 5 short lessons.

You don’t want to miss any of this critical information.

Below is your first video, the other two videos are further down the page (my little trick to get you to read this stuff). The following technique is extremely simple and can be used by anyone with little practice.

*Note: Feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of the page. I enjoy the feedback and others may learn from your insights & thoughts. Enjoy.

Know When The Fight Is On:

Today’s lesson is meant to get you up to speed quickly. It includes the most important things you need to know to win a street fight.

The best way to win a fight is to recognize it before it has happened. Countless guys get taken out by some punk without even knowing they were in a fight (they either didn’t see it coming or didn’t want to believe they were in a fight). Don’t let this happen to you.

There are three ways to recognize a fight (other than someone punching you). There are non-verbal body language cues, verbal cues, and previous behavior (aka common sense).

Aside from getting hit there are 5 main non-verbal cues that you are about to be in a fight:

  1. The “Look Away:” During an argument the other guy suddenly looks away from you off to one side. An experienced street fighter and special ops soldier Jim West uses this cue all the time. He once told me, “If I’m in a confrontation with someone and they look to the side, it means they’re about to hit me – so I hit first.” It may seem odd but looking away is a very common, almost reflex like, reaction for many aggressors. So take Jim’s advice and hit first because if you don’t his haymaker will be sailing towards your temple.
  2. The “Finger Jab:” Someone poking you in the chest is also a big red flag. It’s a way that your opponent “tests the water” to see if you are an easy target. He’s building up his confidence and resolve, by violating your personal space. If you stand by and do nothing, it tells him, “the water’s fine… go ahead and attack this guy.” A poke in the chest, or any violation of your personal space at the initial stages of a confrontation should trigger some kind of immediate response from you.
  3. The “Shove:” Yet another classic example of violating your personal space, except this move is almost always immediately followed by a punch. You should expect very little time between the shove and the incoming blow, which of course means you need to act fast in this situation. People typically don’t push, then walk away.
  4. The “Target Gaze:” An opponent will naturally look at what he’s about to strike. Watch out for an adversary who changes his gaze from your eyes to your chin or some other obvious target. This is another one of those gifts from human nature, he can’t help but look where he is going to strike, so use that information to gain the upper hand.
  5. The “Chin Drop:” Another involuntary move that should prompt you into a decision is seeing your opponent drop his chin. This is a fairly consistent, and subconscious act of protecting the neck, it almost always means trouble.

Verbal Cues:

  1. The Threat: “I’m gonna zyx@%# you up!” This may seem so obvious that it’s not worth mentioning. And I wouldn’t mention it if my research didn’t show that MOST inexperienced fighters do nothing in the face of serious verbal threats. They often stand by and take NO action.
  2. The “Sudden Silent Treatment:” If your opponent has been talking, talking, and talking, then suddenly becomes quiet, it means he’s entered into an internal dialog on what he’s about to do to you. As FightFast instructor Demi Barbitos says: “Fighters don’t talk and swing at the same time.” In other words he is probably about to hit you.

Previous Behavior:

This one is painfully simple. If you are around someone who is known to be violent it’s pretty likely they may start a fight. Don’t play with fire. Also intoxicated men are trouble, intoxicated men with women around are even more trouble. If you get into an argument or scuffle with a drunk guy and his girlfriend or other women are around he is very likely to fight.

I’ve worked with almost a dozen bar bouncers from some of the roughest bars and nightclubs and they all know that saving face is one of the biggest causes of fights. In other words if you somehow manage to bump into, slight, or irritate a drunk guy or his girlfriend a fight is pretty likely, so be ready for it.

Now that you know how to recognize a fight before it happens I’ve got another fight move for you. This one is from professional fighter and notorious “cooler” Mike Serr. Go ahead and watch the video before moving onto the next section.

Dealing with Fear:

When it comes to fighting and learning how to fight fear is the 800 lb. gorilla in the room. Everybody knows it’s there but nobody want to talk about it.

Well like it or not I’m going to talk about it. After 20 years of working with Special Ops soldiers, SWAT cops, Cage-Fighters, Ex-Gang Enforcers, and bar bouncers, I’ve learned that all of them feel fear before a fight.

Wow, what a shocker. Fear is normal and healthy. The thing is none of these guys are scared, because they have learned to deal with that fear and make it work for them.

They have learned to harness that adrenaline dump and make it work for them, not against them.

The average guy on the street, when confronted with a life threatening fight will quickly realize the danger and the voice inside his mind will start talking a mile a minute, “Why is this happening to me? Am I going to die? What did I do to piss him off? Should I run? Should I stay and fight?” and on and on.

Letting this internal dialogue turn your fear into panic will get you hurt. Instead you have to use that fear and adrenaline to help you identify targets and take action.

The first step is to control your breathing. Slowing the pace of your breaths (inhale deeply and exhale slowly) sends a direct message to your brain that calms you down, lowers your heart rate, and lowers your blood pressure.

The next step is target awareness described below. But before we get to that here’s another video for you.

Target Awareness:

Once you know a fight is eminent you need to look for open targets to strike. To do this you must be aware of certain “high value” targets on the human body, so that when they are exposed or unprotected you know when and how to strike them for maximum damage.

Target awareness is a continuous process because as an attacker moves closer or further away from you the targets you can strike change. Below is an example of what your internal dialogue should be like once you realize a fight is coming:

“He’s approaching me — is he in range?”…
“Is there anything in his hands?”…
“What targets are open?”…
“Are there any friends around?”…
“Now… what targets are open?”…
“Is anyone behind me?”…
“What targets are open now?”…

Finally you need some basic info about what targets to strike and why, some are common sense some may surprise you:

Neck: the side of the neck is a “knock out” area. The good news is that the shoulder and head offer a natural “funnel” that’ll guide your hand directly into his neck – which means it’s a “high percentage” shot. People rarely protect their neck properly so even a poorly executed shot can often mean instant knock out.

Groin: believe it or not, research shows that most guys do NOT protect their groin. They are so “indoctrinated” with the idea that they’ll be punched in the face that they leave themselves wide open for one of the most devastating strikes. So forget about focusing so much on getting in that right hook to the head, (which he’ll be expecting), and start looking for an OPEN target.

Inside knee: very vulnerable. One good kick to the inside of the knee can end a fight instantly.

Outside thigh: a favorite target of Muay Thai fighters is the nerve running down the outside of your leg. Even a well conditioned fighter can’t stand more than a couple good shin kicks to this nerve before buckling.

Eyes: Striking the eyes is a great distraction technique. They are the main sense used during a fight, take them away for even a second and you have gained a huge advantage. An eye strike causes a person to blink involuntarily, and if scratched the eyes will water blurring vision.

There are many more targets these are just a few to get you thinking like a fighter.

Keep your eyes peeled for more free videos, in the next lesson I’ll take you inside the world of a real street fight. This is something most guys have no idea about, thanks to myths and misconceptions that often get guys hurt or killed.

Knowing what a real fight is actually like is a huge advantage.

  1. This is a move I am very familiar with. I have not used it for a reason that you stated, it can be a fetal blow. I have not wanted to kill anyone sense leaving Viet Nam. It is still one of my favorite moves.

  2. During eight years of active service in the United States Army. I was a U.S. combative instructor at Fort Benning, GA and we used to teach the ear slap and the different variations. I just wanted to reassure your other students that this technique is devastatingly effective.

  3. great move on tricking the hands to do what you want them to do. good information on sself defense very helpful.

  4. I am 65. Student of Krav Maga! 2 days a week! One on one instruction! Sparing! Golds gym once a week! Good shape for 65. Your material is very good!! Nothing is better than one on one sparing!! The best training is to be alert always! Condition green, yellow, red are all life!! Training is the answer to self defence!! Most older people are very much targets because they do not have a mind set to fight back!!! May God bless us who want to be sheepdogs and protect the sheep!!!

  5. These techniques would work in certain situations but, not all. A lot of people including myself know that a fight usually ends on the ground, so why not take them to the ground immediately. I am sure you’ll will get to more advanced moves but, for close quarters fighting for example somebody grabbing your shirt and pulling you close, nothing beats a knee to the groin or a sharp elbow to the face.

  6. As a bounty hunter and a MMA fighter Im always learning new techniques to bring that person down but I have never seen finger magic work till last night when I was put into a position to escort a person to the ground using the finger wrap…..wow I was in shock how quick he hit the floor. These are some BADAZZ moves.

  7. Excellent info, very discriptive and easy to understand.. Thanks!
Hopefully I will never have to use them, however, always a good feeling to have the confidence that you can protect yourself or loved one’s if necessary.

  8. I’m getting into strengthening my body and mind while finishing my education. I need a strong body and a strong mind to overcome all of these demons in the world that have been holding people like me down for several generations. I definitely need an elite education and powerful and dangerous fighting techniques in order to live the life that I want to live. I could use your techniques in addition to studying and learning the most dangerous form of martial arts known to man. I’m going to also make sure my daughter gets a quality education and learn the best fighting techniques in the world also. If you all can help me and my daughter in our quest for knowledge and the best fighting techniques in the world please feel free to contact me, we may be able to work something out.

  9. Great With the information you are giving me it is making me more confident to look after myself. People might think this is not necessary in New Zealand but it is getting worse day by day as violence is being imported!

  10. This is great stuff for the younger crowd. I’m sixty five years old and not as fast as I was twenty years ago. Do you have something for the older crowd?? I can use some of the young stuff but not all.

  11. Thank you so much for your self defense program. At 76 years old and with a broken back put together with screws and pins, this information may save me from injuring my back even more because of someone who is not thinking straight. My father taught me some self defense moves when I was a child. Fortunately I have never had to defend myself. I hope I never have to! But I think it is important to know something that may help should I ever run into a problem. Your program was certainly affordable since I have a very limited income. I think every senior citizen should have this program in their home and watch it frequently! THANKS!!

  12. I have studied Phillipino Cali, and Hapkido along with a few others. Joint manipulation and throat strikes are familiar to me but this was explained and demonstrated in a way that anyone can learn. I also love the Idea of people being able to use what they can and discarding what they don’t actually need. I am small and I prefer close range so I don’t often use a lot of kick boxing, the techniques I have seen so far I have added to what I know and would (if circumstances allow) try to execute first before I would use what I have learned in the past Thank you. I would recommend this before trying to teach what I have studied in the past.

  13. Glad you gave me the free stuff, next month i will sign up for your courses, problem as usual is money so tight now adays, but this stuff is so simple, and im tuly impressed. !

  14. I am a Personal Self Defense Instructor, with my own business. I must admit, the first 2 Finger Magic Takedowns were new to me. Thank you for this and I look forward to seeing more..

    Peter C.

  15. Thank you for the very valuable information. However the first and the second video keeps coming out with error message “an error occurred please try again later”. The third video is awesome. We are always taught chin down when doing a kata and randori. I wasn’t aware that you can actually strike the throat since its one of the weak area. I’m definitely going to use it in future.

  16. In my life iv been in over 100 street fights and pub brawls in one on ones 4 on one me been the one I had the best fight of my life in Byron bay in 1996 when my mate and I fought 8 guys against just 2 of us, only the benefit of that fight I took care the problem with a lump of wood but even recently I got jumped buy to young blokes after been hit by surprise with a left hook and huge 90kg right king hit he actually managed to stagger me down on one knee as I had some quick thinking to do I saw his foot coming out of the corner of my eye to boot my head of I got my elbow up in time to block him I then spun around twice on my knees to get some distance between us and in the same move I jumped to my feet and hit him in the cheek bone with a beautiful straight left and heard the bone crack and near broke my fist I hit him that hard my hand swall up like a balloon and jard my wrist and shoulder but he buckled at the knees and his mate grabbed him and they took of in a car waiting near by it was pretty funny the look on his face after I hit him I don’t think they were expecting me to jump up so quick if at all. Even after my experiences I still tell people there s always something you can learn.

  17. I appreciate this site. I am a 46 year old woman and used the throat groin because it is instinct. On a marine. I believe that you are correct in not having fear. There is no reaction time, it is kill or be killed. I believe in survival. Thank you for educating me. I realize I did not do it correctly. But it did work. I appreciate the info and I look forward to learning more. Thank You

  18. My nephews skate park has been over run with older teens. threatening parents and children alike.
I live in a small town outside Glasgow, Scotland.
I have been studying finger magic techniques after coming across them on your site and thankfully haven’t had to use them yet, but have came close to recently.
I am not a violent person but these older kids, 18,19yr olds, are animals and I cant let them threaten local kids anymore.
Problem is I’m just not skilled enough to take on more than 2 at a time.
Thank you for going some way to giving me a way to protect my family and defend myself in the future, although I hopefully wont need to,
any help you think may be of help will be gratefully received,

    kind regards
    Ian P

  19. like to say that this program is great. I am a62 year old male with a number of health and mobility issues, and have been exploreing self-defense with a cane which is great but still didn’t address the problem of hand to hand encounters ,that some times you can’t just run away….and sense breaking the bones of some one who would attack an elderly person doesn’t bother me this information is fantastic thank-you

  20. This is first time I have seen any instruction (live or video). With some actual practice you obviously have the advantage unless the opponent has more experience with the proper defense for your seemingly necessary offense. I have early appt. w/MD and will be accessing your program.

    Charley Scott (age 70)

  21. Very good material, but remember that not all street fights are life threatening. the fingers techniques are excellent; just don’t automatically go to using lethal force just because someone – e.g., a drunk – starts a fight over nothing.

  22. so far nothing new, techniques common in many different arts .what works works and becomes common, don’t want to sound negative just waqnt to see something new will stay tuned for next round

  23. Thanks , my wife and I are both on a fixed income I really like what I purchased she is 65 and I am 64 she is white and I am black we run into a lot of situations from time to time. I really wanted to take avenge of the bonus’s you offered but can’t at this time I guess I have to save up and have to buy it full price ant a later date but I’m very pleased at what I have so for. will practice daily to Master the techniques thanks keep up the good work
    Michael Ishop

  24. I just went over the first day of info that was sent to my email, and I have to admit that it was 10 times better than i thought it would be. Now of course I excited about tomorrows email, once I get it it will be Chistmas day for me. Thank you very much for producing the information. I look forward to going over the rest of the information that you have provided.

  25. Impressive stuff ….especially the non-verbal cues…this is what even trained fighters are likely to miss.

Classical martial arts don’t teach the dirty tricks for street fighting

  26. i was a fighter and went to prison for a year had hard times in there and i lost my bottel how can i get over this

  27. Wow, how simple! While walking down a busy street a year or so ago, three guys cornered me and the smallest guy finger jabbed me in the chest. I now understand why.

  28. this is something that I hope I will not ever have to use but if I have to then it will be used only as self defense. I am a 61 year old disabled vet that lives in a very high crime area of Indpls, In. I was threaten several weeks ago by a drug gang for not doing what they told me to do which was to turn off my security light I have on at night that exposes there drug dealings and the hookers they also control. I will not comply with there threats or be intimidated by there actions. I can resort to other actions which I have buried at a friends country house, like I told them I will give them a war they don’t want or will believe because in my time 43 years ago we were train not to take prisoners. USMC Semper Fi

  29. Before using any of these tactics, one must be sure it is worth spending a long time in jail. You’d better be damn sure the other guy was going to injure or kill you. You WILL go to jail in the USA for defending yourself with deadly force. When sitting in jail for the next few years, you need to be able to assure yourself that what you did to the guy was better than the alternative.
If you can’t, then your only choice is to walk away and look like a pussy. Again, you need to be confident that was also better than the alternative. Best tactic is to completely avoid situations where people are likely to become violent.

  30. Thanks for the info. sounds interesting and something that i want to learn for myself. I have been a victim of domestic violence and i really want to learn how to defend myself. Eventually I do want to purchase a video on the techniques.

    thanks
    marcy

  31. I am deeply grateful that you have sent the emails to me. Soon, I hope that I will be able to purchase your CDs. I think they will help me to take care of myself, and encourage me to get in better shape as well.
Keep up the good work. It’s very much needed.
    Sincerely, Donna

  32. I was amazed by your day 1 technics, very infomative. Can,t wait to see day 2.I’m getting older now and it’s important to me to be able to defend myself in any situation. Thank you for the very informative info sure I will be ordering the full course when I get paid. Can’t wait to get started.
    Thanks
    Leonard

  33. Very impressive. I would like to know a few more advanced variations of these techniques I have only watched day 1 but I think this is going to be a good lesson for me and I can’t wait for day 2-5. Thank you very much for the videos. The hand magic is very good and effective as I have been doing it after figuring it out after it being done to me at age 10 since then I have been known to take down anyone that tried to harm me but thankfully I haven’t needed to hurt anyone. There are far more devastating hand magic variations I have created myself that have the potential to tear off a persons arm or make a person pass out because of the pain but these I do favour as they are far faster to use.

  34. Hi, I have known and used these “surprise” moves over many years. I am 67 years old and have a little experience with the results of making any of these moves. The biggest problem you will encounter, unless your situation is favorable, is lawsuits from your attacker. I am not being comical. Your opponent, if he can find out who you are and is a little informed, will try to hit you with a “malicious maiming” suit to make some money or whatever. In these times self-defense is not a concept. Sounds crazy but look at the uncountable millions the American government spends to destroy the second amendment- which is really the right to self-defense. So there has to be a component of “softly, softly, catchy monkey” in self-defense. Thank you

  35. These were great! Somewhat simple moves, but with practice, I believe I could use them, even though I’m an 84 yr. old female with a slight limp from a fractured hip. I do believe I could defend myself, at least somewhat, from a drugged-out younger person. Hopefully that will never be necessary, but the world I grew up in has changed so much and I no longer enjoy being “out and about” without a companion. Even they might not know these defense tactics though. Glad I checked this out and looking forward to the next video. I was a tennis player and have strong arms, so perhaps that would help. THANKS — you’re a blessing to many people I’m sure.

  36. Sometimes I’d be in a fight and get in a shot and the guy says alright I give. So I stopped. Then I figured out that if he could just say “I give” and get me to stop, he’s the real winner. So now if a guy says “I give” or throws up his hands, to me that’s a sign to hit him again–hut him bad–The fight isn’t over until the winner says it is. So keep taking your shots–keep hurting him, stomach, chest, kidney, anywhere there’s pain that’s what I want to do to him.

Also I like to get at a guy who’s sstripped down–at least shirtless–evem of it means I have to strip off shirt my self. I want to see those perfect places to smash the guy–to make him feel the pain. I feel once we’re shirtless, no protection at all, then I’ve got the advantage.
