Fighting From A Distance: Pepper Sprays Secret Advantage

Got a little “fight” story for you.

Alright, guess it’s more of an “almost fight” story. But you’ll want to hear this anyway.

Here we go: A few years back I was at a gas station and ran into a little trouble.

You see, I was pumping gas into my big RAM pickup truck. It’s got an extended cab and an 8-foot bed, so it was a real beast to maneuver into tight places.

Turns out, (as I later discovered) I was accidentally blocking the exit path for folks who wanted to drive passed my gas pump.

I wasn’t even unaware of the problem — until a couple of big dudes in a beat-up Datsun pulled up right next to me and started screaming obscenities.

Whoa. I had NO idea what was going on or what it was all about, but I immediately checked to see if they had any visible weapons (they didn’t)…

…and then I calmly reached for something that was strapped on my side…

… my beeper.

Okay… it wasn’t really a beeper, it was pepper spray purposely designed to LOOK like a beeper.

The angry morons eventually backed up and peeled off, (not sure why they didn’t just ask me to move my truck like any other sane people would have done), so thankfully there was no bloodshed and I didn’t have to mace anyone.

But it was a significant moment.

Even though I’m just 5’9” and 165 pounds, I was able to remain confident, clear-headed, and unafraid, knowing that I could have easily stopped either one of these goons, even both of them, if things would have escalated.

And that’s my point. When possible, stop an opponent from a distance.

If you can avoid engaging in an actual hands-on struggle, it’ll be much safer for you and your family. But instead of using a gun, or a stick, or throwing rocks, (all viable options)…

I mean, let’s face it: MOST guys don’t want to go to a club, or into a business meeting, or on a date… with a can of pepper spray strapped to their side.

While I’m probably more aware than most guys just how perfect pepper spray can be for defending yourself — I STILL didn’t want to carry it around.

Made me look paranoid.

Which was why I chose to purchase one that looked like a beeper.

Of course, beepers have been long ago replaced by cell phones… so I had to get rid of my fake beeper.

  1. I used to spray the police CN and CS gas in my face to show students it did not work as advertised! It did not immediately incapacitate me! I was able to function almost as if I had not just soaked my face in the MACE.
    Then along came Pepper Spray! I will not indorse any non-lethal self defense tool without testing it completely. I have done extensive testing on myself and volunteers and this is the best stuff on the market! It also works on bears and dogs and at one time I understand the Navy was testing it as a shark repellant. The idea of having it in a pin is great, I carry one on me almost all the time.
