Vicious Rear Arm Grab Takedown

Dealing With Arm Grabs

There are many street fighting situations in which someone grabs your arm from behind. This is commonly seen in bar fights where a guy is pissed off, comes up behind you, grabs your arm to turn you around, and takes a swing. It is also very common in multiple attacker scenarios.

Usually, one guy will pick a fight with you while his buddy comes up behind you and grabs your arm to restrain you. This video shows you a simple and easy-to-master technique that will take out any attacker who tries to grab your arm from behind.

How To Pick Locks. (Who Needs Keys?)

You may find this shocking, but picking open a standard "tumbler" lock, (like the one on your front door), is pretty damn easy when you know how it's done.

And in a "meltdown" survival situation, (once the smash-n-grab crowd has stolen everything not tied-down), the food and water and secure shelter will all be behind locked doors, (which explains why Special Forces are often trained in lock picking... and why they carry a set of lock pics with them).

It's a lot of fun learning this skill, (it doesn't take long)... and kinda nice to help out that buddy locked out of his house after the wife discovered what really happened on that "no money down" real estate seminar in Vegas.

Breaking It Down

As you can see in the video, the groin strike is crucial to this move. Your attacker will expect you to fight his arm which is what most people instinctively do. Because of this he won’t have time to block his groin.

The key to the forearm strike to the base of the skull is to pivot and drop your body weight into it. Many times these two moves alone will take him to the ground, ending the street fight and giving you a chance to escape.

If he is still on his feet, grabbing his head and controlling him by hooking his eye socket is a powerful move. He will go where you want him to, especially since he will be off balance from your previous two attacks.

As shown in the video, turning his head while stepping backwards gets him completely off balance, letting you throw him to the ground. This will effectively end the street fight, or, in a multiple attacker situation, give you time to deal with the other guys. Depending on the situation, you may need to follow up with kicks and stomps to finish the job or you can just make your escape. It’s your choice.

  1. Mr. Pierce,

THank you once again for bringing practical real world info to the masses. The eye hook is a very practocal and useful tool, and the nice thing about techinques like this is you don’t have to spend 20 years in a dojo to learn this.

    Keep Up The Good Work,

    Joe Breen

  2. that move looks very effective.and most of the time in the street for most people simple is better. but I also belive without hard some times painful practice . the avg person will freeze up when it comes down to a surprise attack on them .even if the moves are simple and ewffective as that moves seems

  3. Thank you for that short video and I hope to see many more. I am trying to teach my children the proper and most effective way do protect themselves and their loved ones from the ever growing aggresion of todays society. I will be looking forward to some more of this from you.
    Allen Bell

  4. Effective if he uses his right hand to grab your left arm. But suppose he grabs your right arm with his right hand?

  5. All Comments here seem to have one thing in common. They all assume that other people in the audience all have the same problems with the practical application of these techniques when in a real world environment. Please do not assume that other people have our background. I know of many combatants whom are small in physical stature but great in spirit. As they say explosives come in small packages. If you have doubts about the effectiveness of any techniques please try to work those doubts out in your own life and not assume others are filled with the doubts anchored within you.

  6. simple , effective, to the point, easily mastered. Now all I have to do is practice ! Again, another loud and resounding OORAH.

  7. Thank you Kathy, I am sure that this maneuver done in an explosive manner would be quite effective. Practice should be done from either side. Speed of reaction and as much force as you can muster are requisite with the stomping to break ribs or fracture the skull following immediately upon the attackers getting thrown to the ground. Hesitation will put you in jeopardy if the attacker is truly tough.

  8. Great instructor! But let’s get real. The first place people go for is the testicles…….especially lady’s. That is the first place you protect…..and if it don’t hit just right all you’re going to do is piss off somebody jacked up on street drugs. I’m not putting her down at all, she is great………..BUT, remember, don’t ever cant on the testicle blow to be a sure thing. Assuming you understand this, there are another moves that you follow up with if the testicle blow doesn’t work. I am sure this nice lady knows this and I wish you guys would go through the moves about…….what to do when the first blow to the testicals does not work. Great instructor.

  9. I am glad to know that some counter measure (s) is/are available even if I do not have second nature
ability to react. An attacker may pause that precious second or two even if one bumbles protecting oneself
beacause I opine the misfit expected no resistance and no possibility of harm inflicted upon himself/herself. The second or two may be enough time to escape to safety.

I appreciate the information because knowledge is power and remembering something seen on one
of these videos could be a life saver. I would rather bumble by trying than doing nothing, as I was feeling helpless. SO, I say THANK YOU!

  10. I see two areas where this “move” could use improvement…

    (a) If you train this move to the degree it would work in a real life threatening situation (meaning with thoughtless speed), you’re probably going to end up hurting someone like your grandma…who reaches for the arm of someone, from behind, with no ill intentions.

    BECAUSE

    (b) allowing someone to (with ONE HAND)…open you up…FULLY EXPOSED…when they have the following advantage for a moment:
    -surprise
    -one free FIST
    -one free ELBOW
    -two free KNEES
    -two free FEET
-and if they like it close and personal…one free HEADBUTT

…is putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

At the very least, the FIRST reaction should be to lower your Dantain…to the degree that the held arm is now a pointed elbow AT your attacker (for defense against an oncoming strike AND to make a nano-second decision if it’s grandma or it’s time to pulverize somebody’s nards and change the biological terrain of their mental atmosphere!)

Allowing yourself to be led around by your elbow, can get your jaw jacked…fortunately for this video the attacker just wanted to hold hands. What if right behind the arm pull was an open-palmed shot to the jawline/side of face of YOU while YOUR FREE HAND is back behind your hip, winding up for the devastating nard shot? Now all of the sudden, if the attacker came to get what they want…this method of defense gets you knocked out!

Unprotected temple, chin, gut, pelvis…that’s how you should turn around?

(stop the video a six seconds…if you KNEW you were going to grab someone and that they would turn around, do you think YOU could crush any number of openings shown six seconds deep into this “advice”???)

I’m just sayin’…you could get people hurt with this advice. When is she “assessing” who the “attacker” is?…on her way to deliver the blow???

  11. It is refreshing to see, that even though Ms. Long is an MMA fighter, she is not constrained by the rule/regulation mentality of the average MMA, or even competition martial arts fighters.

The technique demonstrated through the video work, an o need not practice it 500 times to be proficient at it. Repetitive muscle memory training appears to be the norm in most martial arts school; however, from my experience, I have come to realize that training the nervous system, in contrast to the muscle, is much better.
It allows the student to learn quicker, and react more rapidly than one trained in muscle memory.

Ms. Long is an exceptional martial artist, and one I have much admiration for. I am looking forward to meeting her in Newport Beach next month, at the USA Hall of Fame ceremony.

  12. Great Move ! for an attacker from behind, Puts him in for some severe pain and, he,s taken down fast…….

  13. to avoid the fear factor of being supprised, one needs to have the mind set of “i am going to DESTROY anyone that messes with me”. make it rock solid in your mind and vision it in your mind in your spare time (any free moment)loose yourself in your imaganation and WATCH yourself literly destroy people. it is just like watching a video, but you are the person in the video.if you can not easily take someones life without regret, then forget self defence and hire a body guard. the person who gets their head slammed on the ground like in this video, has a high probility of never getting up again, and it is a good possibility you will be arrested and face a jury if the prosicutor is an asshole.but if you hesitate just 1 second you will be the victum.
so unleash all the hate you can muster in every practise and thought. if you ever go to prison and hesitate you will not like the results.in 10 years inside as a convict, ive seen it all, and those guys in there sometimes make parole or flatten their time (i did)and and are on the street and most likely are the person that is assulting you.alot of the moves here are old school but maybe a very minor detail is diffrent to make it even better.but if you dont have the mindset it wont do you any good because you wont use it.MS Long is realy hot but her attitude is even hoter, she wuld devistate an attacker in a heart beat!!

  14. I am 65 years old and a female and have just had hip replacement surgery and it is so comforting to know that I can do this and protect myself. Currently I am studying but was a security officer and boy would thishave been helpful at certain times

Look forward to hearing from you and will order the video as I still intend to work when fit after the next operation.

    Cheers

  15. Great! As an example of the effectiveness of these moves, my dad, Russian born in 1887, became a pro wrestler around 1907, then fled to Germany during the 1917 Russian revolution, becoming a successful college educated businessman but was jumped in 1934 by three Nazi thugs assigned to stomp him to death on a Berlin street. However, within moments this 48 year old left two of the thugs unconscious on the pavement, with the third thug running away to save his miserable self.
Years later, when my oldest son reported being bullied in school, he became grandpa’s pupil and the bullying promptly stopped. Now this son owns and runs a successful martial arts school here in Los Angeles.

  16. Thanks for this demonstration. I’ll teach it to my granddaughters who are now in high school. I was very impressed and I hope they will get much more confidence in themselves as a result of the teaching.

  17. I don’t think it would matter if he grabs you by your dominant hand. The technique will still be effective, although depending on which hand is dominant, you might be moving in the other direction, than in the video. Like she said, go with the flow, if the fool happens to grab your arm, turn andstep towards him. If he grabs you with the same arm his right and yours or his left and your left, obviously you won’t be able to hit him in the groin. Since you would be turning into him, with my free hand, I would use a claw to the side of his face or slap to his ear, then a stomp to his knee and rake down his shin. If he is not on the ground after this, then you could follow through with the forearm strike to the base of the skull and throw him like she demonstrates.

  18. The bad guy is pulling you round for a reason – he is gonna strike again. If you go with his pull you run straight into his follow up punch.
Would it be better to resist the initial drag and spin the other way, snapping out of his grasp and striking into his exposed side?

  19. I had hoped to see the defense for someone grabbing around the neck from behind. This occurred to my wife in a NYC subway and ruptured 2 of her cervical discs, ruining our marital life. Got anything on that?

  20. did you notice that the guy grabs with his right hand and then lets his left arm simply hang down at his side as the chick turns around to strike him in the groin! Amazing…I hope that the next time that i am attacked the attacker simply stands there and lets me perform some goofy karate, tae kwon do, or mixed-up martial arts move on him….in the real world, that left arm would be ripping out her throat as she spun and tried to strike the attacker in the groin…..as soon as i saw that you guys were giving Krav Maga any respect at all I knew that this was all total bullcrap….you have to realize that, against a real fighter (and I am not referring to some mixed-up “martial artist”) that if you punch, you die, if you kick, you die, if you try to block, you die! Those are the words of MY master Joseph Dodaro, who was trained for over 25 years in private lessons by an ex commander of the Taiwan special forces…check his name on Facebook if you want to learn how to fight, NOT how to get killed!

  21. The last duo that did that got surprised. The initial attacker received a double kick to the face after his buddy had grabbed me from behind. When he grabbed me I quickly brought my knees up sending the momentum backward and then lashed out with the double kick.
The guy behind went over the shoulder and got a good shit kicking for his trouble while his buddy was out cold. I quickly walked away when the other guy couldn’t walk. I was 19 years old. I almost killed a guy with a knee shot to the face in another fracas. He shouldn’t have tried to brain me with that shovel should he?

I’m 63 soon and I’m just as nasty now as I was then. I’m just a lot smarter, more experienced and know how to diffuse many situations with my brain today than I did then. I don’t go looking for trouble. I prefer to walk away when possible but if you are determined to get some please make it self defence?

  22. This is just great! I took self defense in high school in Illinois which was required of females! Good simple moves. Always as I try to remember you have to use your fear which can make you very strong!!!

  23. Ms. Long, thanks to you and FightFast guys for this life saving move! I am female and a senior. This is an easily remembered move and it is clear that you were easily able to manage a larger, powerful target which gives me hope. Also, in particular, I have been noticing your and the FightFast guys stances. This too, as you pointed out, is critical to remaining on your feet. I am practicing the lower, feet spread, stance. Finally, I understand the importance of how you guys brace for attack! Thanks so very much! Would love to see more from Ms. Long as well. This lady knows her stuff!
    Sunny

  24. Great video! I’m always concerned that i’ll get hit/grabbed from behind, as i’m female & have a visible limp/weakness walking. I must concentrate on my balance, but that makes me ready for a move using momentum…this has really given me a confident way to respond!!! Thank you!

  25. I want to thank you for your videos. My wife is a truck driver and she is in some bad places and alone a lot of times.. so I share them with her it makes me feel a lot better and her a lot safer thank you

  26. I love Kathy Long, she us very through and informative in her training lessons. I have a book of hers I use to study a lot when I was instructing women in self defense. At least to me she has a very good grasp on how to defend ones self.

    Bob Barker

  27. Thank you for the videos. I go over these in my spare time so I can allow them to sink in just incase I have to use it some day.

  28. AWESOME RESPONSE !!! engaged attacker immediately, and controlled the situation. Nice lesson for one and all. ” THANKS ”

  29. Kathy Long’s rear arm grab defense moves are exceptionally helpful and very practical. Many Thanks.

  30. Beautiful, Ms. Long! I am sending this to every female I know! Thank you for sharing this simple, life saving tip.
