How to Take Down Your Attacker If You Get Cornered

Escaping the Corner

It goes without saying that being cornered is not ideal in a self-defense scenario. Luckily, there are a number of ways to turn the tables on your attacker. In this video lesson, Ray Ellingsen shows you how to escape this deadly scenario using a distraction technique that leads into a brutal takedown.

Breaking It Down

As Ray explained in the video above, using a joint lock can be a very effective technique in this type of situation. The key to pulling this off is using an effective distraction technique. No attacker is going to just let you put him into a joint lock, so a distraction technique such as the open palm strike is crucial for this technique to work.

Keep in mind that the open palm strike is one of many possible distraction techniques for this kind of situation. You can also use a knee to the groin, a head-butt, or even spit in his face.

In fact, I would probably recommend using something other than the open palm strike simply because it will allow you to trap his hand right as you distract him, lowering the risk that he will release his hand or step back.

Trap Your Attacker

Another thing to keep in mind is that this self-defense technique will only work if your attacker is holding onto you. This is where the trapping technique comes in. Holding his hand against your body is essential if you want this move to work. The best thing to do his distract and trap his hand simultaneously.

After you have applied the joint lock and have taken your attacker to the ground, there are many self-defense techniques you can use to end the fight(such as dropping a knee into his groin), but most importantly you will no longer be cornered and you will have created a clear escape route.

  1. You guys are second to none the best I pity any body stupid enough to try to attacking you if so they will live to regret it thanks Joe liguori

  2. I have to say these moves have on occasion been useful, I would prefer to just walk away but it’s not always possible, and being disabled it even works, thanks so much.

  3. Another little piece of information to put in the bag just incase. Thank you for all of these quick and easy get out of a jam tricks. You never know. I will get my daughter and start working on this 1 today. Thanksagian. Donald Track

  4. This move can also be used when your being attacked with a striking blow I do it a lot in fights and most time I get my attacker to the ground or I break his elbow and tear his shoulderout of place

  5. That’s definitely a good hold need to remember to tell them to sidestep in or out as the attacker may try to use his other hand to grab your throat

  6. It looks good move in simulated scenario….but in real world by the time you trap his left arm in convoluted joint lock, you are leaving your face open for him to strike with his right or free hand…..why not instead go ahead and deconstruct the attacker….with rapid hits to his eyes and groin

  7. I love joint lock ups. I’ve studied jui jitsu for approx. 7 years , with many different types of people. I love the power joint manipulation can give you over an attacker. Over the years I’ve gotten into a physical confrontation only once. I,d rather use the muscle in my head instead. Sometimes your given no other choice. When the attacker was in front of me I knew what I was gonna do , and saw one big target in front of me. There was only about 3 or 4 strikes an it was over just that quick. Atemi , very important.

  8. Great move really catches the attacker off guard and you can run free or continue your defensive stack thanks a million

  9. as always, all your material is easy but very effective, you need to target women with your talents, for it would save many rapes, thanks.

  10. That is a very cool “vic/thug displacer”. If your attacker knows how to fight, would they possibly be able to get a hit into the side of the face with their free hand??

  11. I think this joint lock could save your life if learned to master it. I am impressed! Sir Scott Head of M1 Fortress North America

  12. I woke up this morning to open up my emails, scanning through I saw one from Bob so I opened it first. After I watched the video I scrolled down and saw “Jail House Tactics “. I literally laughed out loud. Even us good guys get thrown in jail by the young ex-military robo-cops every now and then.

Thanks for the laugh and the move!

  13. Nice I’ve been studying arts for a while and I use that arm lock more Thai had realised. But another way to that if your attacker puts both hands on your chest or holding your coller then take your dominant hand going over the top of his grab his hands puff at the same time turning your hips and lay that elbow right on the button. Nice to share tactics always keep an open mind. And be inventive

  14. Thank You. Understanding when, why and how something will work is a vital element and i appreciate the knowledge.

  15. Liked Ray’s explanation. He was very clear on his directions, identifying by name the move so that it is easier to remember. Another 5 Star ***** instructor. The video is short and to the point! Well done!

  16. Too complicated, and less versatile than the simpler arm-lock in Codex Wallerstein. Which is basically Ude Garami, as also (probably) featured in Pinan Yondan, though interpretations differ. However I wouldn’t be surprised if people who buy into vicious moves end up in jail. Especially the disembowelling technique.

  17. Reading the responses, no one mentioned that with every move you have protected your face from being hit and the great leverage really puts you in control of this attacker until you’ve decided the issue has ended

  18. Nice technique, if only one attacker. Excellent demenstration. We should also be prepared for the other attacker.

  19. I am concerned with the fact that the attacker behaved so well, after slamming him into the cage ….
Most attackers, I think would be throwing punches not just sitting there waiting for him to throw a counter
In my experience the attack doesn’t end after I’d be slammed into the cage it would become instantly chaotic from his direction
It looked as if he were saying take my arm and put me in a joint manipulation won’t you?Not a big fan of THIS one
    Sorry

  20. Thus is so aawesome! I’m a lady and I took down my 32 yeast old, 6’2″ son who did 2 tours in the army lol. Needless to say he was shocked! Thank you fought fat, I’m have a way to effectively defend myself.

  21. That is a very good move but to me it leaves too many open things to go wrong and he also has a loose hand to do you damage, if he can tolerate the pain he is in.

  22. Very helpfull. I’m handicapped and it would be difficult for me to use. I can use the open hand for distraction. Thanks, all of your information on self protection is valuable.
