How To “Shed” An Attacker’s Punches

An Effective Defense

This shedding self-defense technique is a very simple block that will serve you well if your attacker manages to fire one off before you get a chance to strike first. Shedding is different than parrying techniques in its simplicity. While parrying can take months to master, shedding can be learned in a day or two.

World's Fastest Drawing Knife.

You wanna try out the fastest drawing knife on the planet? Good. Because here's your chance to get it for FREE.

It even comes with a video showing you exactly how to draw this folder from your pocket (one-handed) so that it snaps open and is ready for action in the blink of an eye. (Your buddies are going to be sooo freaked out when they see this).

Breaking It Down

The secret to this self-defense technique is taking the offensive right after his punch. Blocking won’t win a fight and you don’t want to be on the defensive any longer than you have to. To start, you want to move into your attacker as you throw your arm up to shed the punch.

By moving forward you are able to “take the weight off the punch.” This simply means that by moving in you prevent your attacker from completing his weight shift or even block the arm before it is fully extended.

Once you are in close you must go to work quickly using your knees, elbows, and whatever other self-defense tools you have at your disposal. There is no perfect follow up sequence. The best thing to do is to act quickly and attack high-value targets. You need to fire off strikes quickly so that your opponent doesn’t have time to figure out what is going on.

About Outside Shedding

The outside shedding technique shown at the end of the video is a bit more difficult to execute. Luckily most guys you may come up against on the street will be leading off with a right haymaker, not a straight punch.

You must be aware, however, that the inside shedding technique will not work for a straight punch.

The only real way to learn to predict what punch is coming to do some full speed training with proper protective gear where you don’t know what your partner is going to do.

  1. Very good video, practical skills that can help you stop an potenial opponent quickly and without any injury to yourself .

    Keep Up The Good Work,

  2. Krav is simply theft. They’ve stolen numerous bodies of technique from other far better arts (in this case kali), failed to credit them, and called them their own.

    Krav is a marketing gimmick.

  3. I am 59 YO, with no fight training, I really dislike violence, so when engaged, I want to end it as fast and yes with as much violence as possibul.
This “shed” is fantastic for self defence, and it opens the attacker to some other simple, effective strikes that ends the crap real fast.
Thank you, all of you that have spent the time,$, and energy to teach the rest of us how to defend our selves.

  4. I’m 70 years old, no physical fight training except basic military 50 years ago, and have come to that point in my life where there’s just too much crap going on in the streets around me. These techniques may be old to some of you and are probably older than I am, but, I think they need revisited more often, like any training as one gets a little rustier in moves. The techniques are ‘new’ to those who have no training. The internet has opened a whole new world to everyone, regardless of your interests. I welcome the videos and notes these past months, as they complement my CCW training, a great equalizer at my age! Many thanks to Fight Fast and crew.

  5. krav maga is the best fighting system on the planet and the entire idea behind it is that it uses techniques from other arts. it helps israel win all conflicts it is in and never fails them.

  6. Yes Kane Kowalski. I agree 1,000,000,000,000 % I take Krav Maga, and I assure you, I don’t care what these people teach. 3 seconds is fast and thats what krav teaches when survival is necessary. After that time has passed, my opponents are through. Been there, done it. You want to learn real world scenarios and how to effectively be the one that walks away. Take krav.

  7. Hey Bob, Why do these videos always show the short guy as the attacker? I have been involved in and seen many fights over my years of playing music in bars and clubs and through all of that I have only seen the bigger guy going after the smaller guy. I am 6’2″ and weighed 230 lbs the last time I was involved in a fight. The guy that came after me was about 6’5″ and probably 300 lbs. I used my shoulder to block his right cross. The result was that I ended up knocked about 4 feet across the dance floor and flat on my butt. I was just lucky I was able to stay away from him until the two bouncers grabbed him. He slung one bouncer across the room before the second bouncer maced him. They were both about my height and probably 40 to 50 lbs heavier than me. I should also tell you I am a combat trained veteran. Major training in hand to hand combat over 4 years. None of that helped when I was hit with that kind of force. Blocking a blow could be your downfall if the other guy is bigger and heavier than you. The best approach is not to get into range. If you get backed into a corner or wall, put your foot against the wall and when he is barely in striking distance, lower your head, use your leg to pushout out from the wall to increase your speed and force and hit him head on. The worse case scenereo is you will be away from the wall and any blows will be on the back of your body as you move him back and opens up a nice groin shot if he grabs you. How about showing some moves against the big guy trying to hit you?

  8. Excellent information how to stop the haymaker! I would have also liked to have seen it demonstrated in real time to see how the procedure is applied in a split second for the sake of perspective. Nevertheless, I believe that whether one can effect the techniques presented as an expert or not, the important thing is that the aggressor may rethink his/her position that the person confronted is not a patsy, and thus, may stop for self-preservation giving me the time to flee preferably or return aggression.

To the commentator of August 2012 who asserted that this technique from the Israeli Krav Magra is stolen techniques from other martial arts–who cares! Nobody requires a footnoting of how fighting techniques originate or have been incorporated into other fighting systems. What matters is to protect myself regardless of who created the techniques. All of these fighting measures were initially witnessed by someone who improved upon the technique or employed it into a fighting system.

If I protect myself, I shall be glad to leave a footnote and a bibliography upon the perpetrator so that the purists can sleep at nights!

  9. Good tool to add to any style of Martial Arts.
The little humour of combing his hair is a nice touch too.
Thanks and look forward to more.

  10. I’M AMAZED OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING IN THAT DEFENCE. IT IS VERY SIMPLE REALY AND DEVASTATING. NO DELAYED REPLY I MEAN COUNTER. I’M HAPPY THE MOVIE WHICH I THINK VERY USEFUL FOR IN TIMES OF DEFENCE. NICE TECHNIQUES. GOD BLESS AND MORE POWER. THANK YOU.

  11. Nice move. Whenever I’m leaving work walking about a block to may car, which is usually later in the evening, I’ll act like I’m scratching my head while walking towards someone. That way, my arm (the block) is already in position.

  12. Yeah, the hair analogy helped me grasp the concept (although I have very little I will always remember that stroke/movement), especially important is to step into your opponent. This is one of the tenets of of Krav (Kravists won’t start anything, but we WILL FINISH it.) Move in, neutralize the threat and…I thank you guys for the fantastic tips, keep ’em coming!!! Starting my fight fast library soon.

  13. To the Fight Fast Group,Bravo! The simpler the better..and who cares who came up with it!?There is nothing in in the fight game that is NEW under the sun.Keep em coming,Bob.

  18. This is good stuff, knowing how to block punches is as necessary as knowing how to strike hard and strike fast. All this info.
    is FANTASTIC!!!

  19. Very good move; easy to do even in a panic situation. It appears to be a move that one can do without thinking much about it. Therefore, it’s effective every time.
