How To “Shed” An Attacker’s Punches

An Effective Defense

This shedding self-defense technique is a very simple block that will serve you well if your attacker manages to fire one off before you get a chance to strike first. Shedding is different than parrying techniques in its simplicity. While parrying can take months to master, shedding can be learned in a day or two.

Breaking It Down

The secret to this self-defense technique is taking the offensive right after his punch. Blocking won’t win a fight and you don’t want to be on the defensive any longer than you have to. To start, you want to move into your attacker as you throw your arm up to shed the punch.

By moving forward you are able to “take the weight off the punch.” This simply means that by moving in you prevent your attacker from completing his weight shift or even block the arm before it is fully extended.

Once you are in close you must go to work quickly using your knees, elbows, and whatever other self-defense tools you have at your disposal. There is no perfect follow up sequence. The best thing to do is to act quickly and attack high-value targets. You need to fire off strikes quickly so that your opponent doesn’t have time to figure out what is going on.

About Outside Shedding

The outside shedding technique shown at the end of the video is a bit more difficult to execute. Luckily most guys you may come up against on the street will be leading off with a right haymaker, not a straight punch.

You must be aware, however, that the inside shedding technique will not work for a straight punch.

The only real way to learn to predict what punch is coming to do some full speed training with proper protective gear where you don’t know what your partner is going to do.

  3. This video is a good one. We have practiced this shedding technique in my self defense class, quite a lot. Thanks for the lesson. This is appreciated. Have a good week.

  4. That was another good demo. It was easy to follow and made very good sense of how to use it. Of course, just like all the others it takes some practice.

  5. Mr. Bob, I love what you are offering but my wife was ran over by a 24 year old male in a F250 with a push guard on it while she was out walking. It busted her up pretty good and almost took her life but God is awesome. I would very much like to have everything you offer for our self-defense but the boy had no insurance and we have lost everything we have by trying to take care of her.please don’t give up on us, thank you and God Bless.

  6. Get used to being hit (GENTLE sparring).
As the actor Michael Caine said:
    “Give him the old one-three”
    “What about the ‘two’ ?”
    “You get that !”
You could be a very experienced practitioner but if you can’t recover then it’s all over for you.

  7. This is another very good one that I think it will take a lot of practice. I can see your in a lot of trouble if you try these on a straight in punch.

  8. My thanks to Mr. Breaker”s for a V W ry natural move from defense strength to offensive technique, simple but cleaver thank you. Peace

  9. My thanks to Mr. Bressler”s natural move from defense strength to offensive a very cleaver move but great techniques to achieve the finishing touches Luv it keep them coming . Peace

  10. These are really good, easy things to do if your not that strong. Truly smarter than some other methods. Pure logic and practicality.

  11. Great tip. Simple but effective. My goal is to be able to achieve these tips using only one arm & hand. I lost my left arm 27 years ago. Have any helpful suggestions.

  12. This thank you for teaching me a new technique that I didn’t already didn’t know it’s a really good video

  13. Very effective and easier to learn than alot of other moves, well shown on different angles and we’ll explained, this move and others like a knee lock kick are just two moves that will make a would be attacker have 2nd thought s,keep them coming Bob.very interesting!

  14. All unarmed combat demos especially SELF Defence are useful to me. At 63 y.o. & 188cm I’m a gentle giant but as a Christian doing Street outreach in Sydney I never carry weapons , which apart from being illegal in Australia are contrary to the teaching of Jesus. So weather it’s staving off an attack upon myself or drawing an attacker away from another it’s unarmed combat all the way .

  15. I noticed that the instructor was defending against a haymaker punch What if the punch is coming straight at your nose looks like he was wide open

  16. Great information I feel at the age of 62 this is a very good way to protect yourself and defend against somebody who’s takes the offense

  17. As always, humble Thanks for all the ‘ tools’ you have and still are giving to me! I have been forced to use a move that I got from you, and I survived, i divulge I have a schio bro( who distrusts everything then there’s my 68 year old Mom…. You’re tips and hints have always worked and I for one appreciate you and the lessons…
