Quick Takedown

Put Your Attacker On His Rear

If you keep up with the blog or have read my fight guide, you know that I do not recommend taking a self defense situation to the ground. There are a lot of reasons why fighting on the ground is more dangerous than staying on your feet.

However, there are times when taking a fight to the ground is your only option. For that reason I do recommend everybody know at least the basics of how to take an attacker to the ground and how to take care of business once down there. In this video former Delta Force Operator Dale Comstock shows you one great way to take a bigger stronger attacker to the ground with you on top.

Breaking it Down

As you can see this self defense technique is pretty simple. Although it looks complicated when you watch it full speed there only a few things you have to get right:

  • First to make this take down work you must have your foot behind his keeping him from stepping back and maintaining his balance.
  • The other important thing to remember when using this self defense technique is to keep your leg locked out. Without having your leg locked out there is a good chance he will wind up crashing down on top of you totally defeating the purpose of the takedown.
  • The last thing you want is to give him the advantage on the ground.

You’ll want to practice this technique full speed to get the feel of it. I highly recommend you use training mats or some form of floor padding when practicing this move. If you don’t your training partner probably won’t want to come back.

If you don’t have floor pads or access to a gym that does practice this technique half speed on grass or some other softer surface.

Finish The Fight

Remember this is simply a takedown technique. Once you take a fight to the ground you have to know how to finish it down there. For some easy to learn, no-nonsense ground fighting techniques check out Dale Comstock’s Active Duty Package.

The Active Duty Package is a comprehensive fighting system that not only includes unarmed standup and ground fighting, it also includes a complete edged and blunt weapon disarmament and knife fighting system.

Active Duty it’s a great package coming from a decorated Delta Force operator with the real world life-on-the-line combat experience to back it all up. Oh and did I mention he was also a competitive boxer and kick-boxer. Needless to say Mr. Comstock knows what he talking about.

  1. What is to keep the attacker from spinning out away from the hold? Or grabbing you with a judo throw?

  2. That move is a wrestling move, join up,duck under and takedown in mma follow up with palm strikes or punches,or tap out I practice that at my wrestling class.

  3. Hi,
As with all other fighting techniques, it looks and sounds good in the videos, but implementation is the key part.

I see all these techniques done slow, but to learn I must also see what a real time move is like and how effective it is.

I follow the technique of the Systema Spetsnaz, it is simple and effective, but, coming from a rough area of Glasgow, Scotland, I use my head. Literally!

By ramming your forehead into the aggressors nose or teeth a few times will daze them enough, then go for the ‘Double Ear Slap’ this will deafen him, when he is down, turn and run or go in for the kill

remember, Don’t go looking for a fight. if you find yourself threatened, the smart man walks away, if you are pursued, and your only option is to fight, be prepared to kill, but don’t let it be your first option.

    Much Obliged

  4. without sounding like an ad here, “Active Duty” is everything that they’re saying it is. In addition, unless I’m mistaken, Mr. Comstock is a protege’ of Jim West, isn’t he? Isn’t that him in “Jim West’s Fight to Win”?

  5. this take down technique is gracie jiu-jitsu 101. the best self defense technigques i have come across are that of target training. I am a veteran of karate( don madden) and bando( dr. maung gyi), and i have yet to find realistic combat techniques, except that of target training. I f i am wrong please forgive me, but i do not think that i am.

  6. Remember the “Second Fight”, similar to gun fighting in todays legal situation. You can win in the street and then be destroyed in court. I heard of a guy who knew San Soo Kung Fu, was jumped by 4 or 5 guys in a bar in San Francisco. He went into automatic mode, did what he was trained to do and KILLED all of them. Dead. Then we went up on Murder charges, was convicted and sent to prison for LIFE. What’s righteous on the street may not carry into todays twisted and pervese cultural elite legal structure. Be prepared, know how to limit your moves to what’s appropriate. Have a good lawyer on stand by and don’t go looking for trouble. Try to get out of it loudly and publicly, you want lots of witnesses if something goes down.

  7. That looks like a good set up for a rear choke hold to finish or a kick in the rear and escape. Thanks Dale i always see a out from your examples.

  8. I was in a similar situation, I win at first againest a Group of punks. They had the usual staff, chains, knifes…now I am an outlaw. Had to leave the country and if I return “home” I will Not make it out of the airport compound as a free man. Be very careful when you have to “Act”. The civiliced world is a paradoxum in itself. I feel sorry for all the guys who are “right” but now in jail.

  9. the instructor did a good job of going over the finer details which are usally the difference in the move working or not

  10. In response to Bob’s Post:
In this day and age even “IF” you are jumped and YOU DID NOT initiate the fight and you kill someone or in your known case to be five guys, and worse yet San Francisco of all places you go to Jail and spend the rest of your life in prison. It is no longer about self defense but how much damage that you personally did. YOU need to always keep your head in these situations; so what do I mean? When the fight is over don’t hang around to see how much damage you have done, you put your head down and walk away as fast as you can, do not run, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars do not get in your car just leave, take an alternate form of transportation, and “IF” you think you have killed someone leave the country and NEVER COME BACK, unless prison is appealing to you. I prefer Wing Chung myself, and or KRAV MAGAW. Either are deadly. I have heard MANY stories about people and issues over “Liability” in a fighting situation. A good friend paid over 20 grand over a gym bag that was stolen from him and in his attempt to recover his property he beat the crap out of this kid who ripped him off (rightfully so) but he paid for the fight, and he paid dearly. The moral of the story “DON’T HANG AROUND.”

  11. i myself faced a similar situation. facing 3 guys, i walked away, only to be brought up on assault charges and sentenced to 18 months in prison! even though they admitted to starting the fight, i ended it with bloody results. would i do it again? u bet your ass i would! now in the process of clearing my name because of information not given by POLICE

  12. San soo dude had an incompetent lawyer, or something. Being outnumbered is the best reason to go lethal. However, yeah, I’d rather be alive in prison than dead. If nothing else the thing is during the deposition, if/when it gets to that, is to admit to being in fear for your life. The concept is that if you weren’t afraid, then why did you feel that you had to kill?
Another important thing is as you discuss such things, be careful about the verbage that you use. Use “stop” instead of “kill”. In other words, if you’re shooting you’re shooting to stop, not shooting to kill. If they happen to die in the process, well, that wasn’t your intention, If you start telling cops that you had to “teach those punks a lesson”, or “put them in their place”, you can expect them to up the charge.

  13. Thank you, Mr. Comstock! Good one for women too! So appreciate these life saving tips. Moms and Dads, teach your little girls!

  14. Kudos and sincere thanks for a well presented video.Like the man said…it is vital that the leg be kept straight when executing the throw and move with lightning speed when you duck under the raised arm of the assailant.Damn fine move!

  15. I feel this is just the video for those smaller guys defending themselves against much bigger and stronger guys without using much strength or energy required to take down a stacker great job thanks joe liguori

  16. Thanks mr bob pierce again for giving me a chance to learn from your collection of skilled defensive fighters on how to defend my self in emergency situations even I am clearly the underdog or being attacked by ore than one person thanks

  17. Had not seen or heard of that move. Basics look easy enough to use just need to practice the technique to get it into the bag of moves !!!??✅????????♉

  18. I’m a 5′ 7″ 150 lb. Man and have used similar techniques to take down larger opponents. Your videos are helpful in showing variations of takedowns.

    Thanks.
    James

  19. I always thought Judo was the most interesting Martial Art. But there’s always the risk of landing on the deck with the Bad Guy on top of you and his mates kicking you in the head.

  20. Great video for most men. Just wish you could show something a man in a wheelchair could use since he is most likely seen as an easy victim. As it is my only option is the use of deadly force.

  21. if its more than one i dont want to go to the ground so strikes have to deadly in a dark alley they can have weapons

  22. Thank you. I never new anything about ‘how to fight and/or defend’ myself, beyond natural kill or be killed response. I have never worked at practicing technique, hence I’ve always felt vulnerable. Thank you again, for these useful, well displayed tips. I have always believed in peace but never want to be a victim.

  23. I suspect most of your Hotlist members are like myself, peaceful everyday minding your own business kind of guys. I have bought many products by TRS and Fight-fast and hope and pray I never have to use them. Every knife, flashlight, spy gear and survival piece of gear I have received from this company brings peace to my soul knowing THIS GEAR is quality when your life depends on it.

The world has gotten meaner and angrier and common sense has become a rare commodity so being prepared isn’t really an option anymore, it’s a necessity! The instructional videos like this are awesome for guys like myself who aren’t street brawlers, bouncers or some kind of gorilla-human clone (Coming soon-they’re still perfecting the cloning in the lab)

Common sense can help avoid many potentially bad situations. That said, avoiding a confrontation is always the first line of defense. Avoid potentially dangerous scenarios by not walking alone at night, avoid dark spots and alleys, run if you can, stay alert to your surroundings and do not let cell phones or any other devices make you distracted and vulnerable and remember that when you are tired and overworked your suppressed natural common sense instincts just might get you killed.
