The Monkey Flip

A Lethal Defense Against A Front Tackle

A front tackle is usually used by a bigger man who is using his larger mass to take the advantage. Trying to stop him in his tracks is useless if you are smaller. That’s just basic physics. That’s why you need a move like this that doesn’t require you overpowering him.

Breaking It Down

This move is pretty simple. Here’s the breakdown:

  1. You check him with both of your forearms against his shoulders. This ensures that he doesn’t get a tight hold on you and prevent you from getting the guillotine.
  2. Next you get the guillotine hold and drop to the ground. It’s very important that when you get the guillotine hold you have your forearm against his trachea.
  3. As you go to the ground you keep one leg bend so that your knee is into his abdomen. Next, you utilize your momentum and a push from the knee that’s into his abdomen to flip him over.
  4. This is where this self-defense technique gets lethal. If you retain control of his head in the guillotine as you flip him it will break his neck. This is not usually the goal of a self-defense technique, but there may be times when you have no choice.

WARNING

Because this is a lethal technique you should NEVER practice it full speed, there are just too many things that can go wrong. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend practicing the flip part at speed unless you and your training partner are very experienced. It’s just TOO dangerous. Once his weight and momentum send him over in the flip, there is very little you can do to stop it. You’ll also want to make sure you have training mats for this one.

This is a great self-defense move, but should only be used when your life is in serious danger.

  1. Good Defensive moves, I presently work both as a Uniformed Armed Security/Protection Officer in a “Bad” Section of Daytona Beach, Florida and also as a Plainclothes Armed Close Protection Officer (Bodyguard) throughout the State, and find that use of these moves, may be a Life saver, instead of use of my .45 Auto

  2. Good move even for smaller guys and women. From the basic moves, there are variations that can be learned and used.

  3. Yea thanks for this, this is a necessary and much wanted instruction on how to defend one’s self in a violent society, country, planet.

  4. Great job great move as a matter life and death called last man standing thanks.

  5. Nice move Sir like you said very slow for the novice. Wonderful way to share the Love.

  6. Mr. Billy Burke, thank you for the exceptional clarity of your explanation and demonstration. I wish all videos were like yours. Precise and to the point.

  7. Very seemingly easy way to go!! Even for a crippled person such as myself.

  8. This maneuver is very similar to the rear strangler take down. This is not a self defense move, rather a lethal take down guard from the rear. You use the same arm hold but you put your face next to his and you jump straight back taking him with you and as you hit the ground, you push forward with your shoulder snapping his neck. Hand to hand combat training in the Army.

  9. Very nasty, I like it. And these days, we all need to know. As many self defense moves as possible. Thank you, and fight fast, for all the great self defense instruction. Have a great, and safe day.

  10. All due respect, but that is not Tome Nage. That Judo technique is actually called Sumi Gaeshi.

  11. Thanks for the video ,but as a veteran myself I never worried about protecting myself. I it is great to be getting a few moves like this one Billy has shown in the video, very well done and explained.
    Thanks again Mark

  12. Thank you. I often worry about how a mother like me can defend myself and my boy if we were ever attacked. I have this move under my belt now. Who cares what you call it, it’s one option I now have. Thank you

  13. There are several moves and holds here I have not seen. This is ideal for any self defense. I really want this program. I already know how to take care of myself but this is so simple and quick.

  14. I really like this move!
It’s one to remember but only to be used in a critical situation.
It’s hard to practice but relatively easy to remember.
The difficulty is in deciding if the guy who attacks you deserves a 2nd chance and if so have you got another move to stop is 2nd attack.
I’d like to see more linked in stuff just in case I don’t want to break the neck ?
    Regards

  15. Wow! That’s absolutely brutal. Thank you for the information. Crazy times we’re living in and you never know, this might save your life one day.

  16. That’s very effective, especially for the smaller person. As a pensioner, I watch a lot of television..the number of abductions and murders of young women in the world is awful….your self defence moved, are life saving…if people are aware of them, I think your self defence, should have more publicly…The best place for the moves to be learnt correctly is in School Colledge and University…I think of all the innocent victims.. ( that had they be taught these moves, would be alive today)….Regards keep well Ang.

  17. I have seen a variant of this move before but instead of the guillotine choke hold what was done was you grabbed the guys wrists and dropped backwards to the ground and had your foot with your knee bent double as you rolled over unhinged into his gut then
he was thrown over your head slamming him onto the ground.

  18. It’s just amazing too think a smaller person, could actually kill…if threatened…..the move is, interesting to watch, it take,s full advantage, of the situation, for the smaller person…
I have been told that to practice, is the best, as it gets your minds in altomatic action…why being confronted by an attacker…regards Ang

  19. I like the self defense tactics that you share with your members they are very helpful and it’s nice that you share these with your members who can not either afford to pay for self-defense training or have no experience in self defense.Thank you

  20. This is a skill that should be your last move in trying to get away, because if you roll on top of him,you could hit him or her with a knockout blow and exit quickly.

  21. Excellent move just do not break your oponets neck, unless you fear your life is in danger

  22. They taught me the monkey flip in ’73 back in the marines. I always thought (had a friend in martial arts) sidestepping then taking him down by the neck would work better. Never had to use it though. I was a sniper in trees.

  23. Awesome thanks
It would be very helpful in a life or death situation only one left standing but at least still alive
Keep it coming hope never to have to use it but if need be now I see a way to be safer or a little more confident

  24. But is this person just going to wait around without twisting his body or moving his legs to get away? I mean is this really realistic and kneeing him in the stomach doesn’t guarantee his entire body will go over.

  25. Excellent move! I’ve actually used the guillotine manueuver to convert into a chokehold & put someone out before, but this is a step beyond. Thanks, hope I never have to use it but grateful for the knowledge.

  26. Kind of scare because I’ve used the tackle move to come in low and wrap my arms around his legs and lift up and push over flipping him behind me then drop and sit on their chest.( hope you can picture what I mean) anyway I didn’t. Know if that person was trained in your monkey flip I could have been killed or worse paralized. Thanks for the video. Off course I was years younger and don’t. Find myself in those kind of positions any more. Mostly bars where the bad stuff happened for me. Alcohol you know makes people stupid.

  27. Would like to see this done on an actual 350 pound man or at least a 250 pound man thank you.

  28. I love your videos on fighting. Being disabled many have looked at me as being defensless. I want to be able to stop them if necessary. Thanks for the info.

  29. Great move, I love watching the videos, and using them to teach my kids and girlfriend, of coarse I modify them a bit. I tech them to side step and use a hammer fist too the back of the neck and or a round House too the stomach, also very affective. I took martial arts when I was younger, and still train and tech self defense today too family and friends, I let them watch all the videos, absolutely love them, keep them coming
