Power Slam An Attacker Using His Clothing As A Weapon

End The Fight Before It Even Begins

This self-defense technique is great when the situation has not yet escalated to a fight but you realize a fight is going to happen whether you like it or not. For example, if you are face to face with your attacker but no blows have been exchanged yet, this is a great fight move to put him on his put him down before the fight even begins.

How To Pick Locks. (Who Needs Keys?)

You may find this shocking, but picking open a standard "tumbler" lock, (like the one on your front door), is pretty damn easy when you know how it's done.

And in a "meltdown" survival situation, (once the smash-n-grab crowd has stolen everything not tied-down), the food and water and secure shelter will all be behind locked doors, (which explains why Special Forces are often trained in lock picking... and why they carry a set of lock pics with them).

It's a lot of fun learning this skill, (it doesn't take long)... and kinda nice to help out that buddy locked out of his house after the wife discovered what really happened on that "no money down" real estate seminar in Vegas.

Pretty Easy, Huh?

As you can see from the video this technique doesn’t require any special skills. The point is that you are using an attackers clothing as a tool to take him out with a power slam. This is not, however, a self-defense move you can walk up to an angry guy and use. To work right he must be off guard.

Now that you understand a little better the type of situation this self-defense move is designed for lets dig into the details of this power slam.

Open With A Distraction Technique

There are several great distraction moves you can use to make sure he is off guard in order to perform the power slam. Here are a few quick examples. A quick look over his shoulder like something is coming. This may distract him for long enough to take hold of him and sweep the leg.

Another examples is to simply hold your hands up in front of you and pretend to be submissive while he yells in your face, then when you are close enough take hold of his clothing and sweep the leg.

This fight moves works really well if the attacker is wearing a loose baggy sweatshirt, but it can be used in other situations as well. In the best case scenario you’ll want to obscure his vision by raising his baggy clothing over his face.

This is not absolutely necessary but will prevent him from knowing you are about to sweep his leg. If the attacker is much larger than you this power slam technique can still work, you just might not be able to cover his face. Either way his clothing is a great tool to use against him.

Sweep Their Legs

The foot work on this move is pretty simple. In the video above you can see that you want to step in with your outside foot, get firmly planted close to him (this gives you stability), then hook and sweep his outside foot with your inside foot.

To make this fight move work you must drive him backwards while sweeping the leg. If you push him back first then wait to sweep the leg he’ll stumble backwards and you’ll miss the leg.

There are dozens more variation on this type of quick and easy takedown, best of all they are all designed to take down bigger men. As you saw in the video Mike’s assistant (the little guy) is a full head shorter that the attacker and still made this fight move look easy.

As a long time high profile personal security expert and bouncer in some of the most dangerous clubs in the southwest Mike Serr knows exactly how to take down bigger men and train new bouncers.

Best of all his techniques are designed to take out belligerent and drugged up attackers quickly and quietly (VIPs don’t like footage of their guards making a scene ending up on the nightly news).

  1. I’m absolutely living this site Bob. Well done sir, all the video is based in practical scenario, and
laws of the street which quite simply dictate that you take someone down hard to ensure they don’t
attempt to get up and try to hurt you again.

This is the same philosophy my old man drilled into me from when I could walk, don’t look for fights, but
make sure you finish them. Much of this is refresher stuff with myself, but I am picking up a few new gems
along the way, which is always satisfying.

I must commend your work, and generosity, and I eagerly await your new videos each day. I think you level the playing field for those not used to these things giving valuable, simple tools that will make a difference for people should they get in a jam.

Keep up the top notch work, I enjoy working these tools into my training as simplicity is the key to survival I find, and was taught. It’s always nice finding like minded people who think Hollywood movie fights are crap, and when shit really goes down these pretty maneuvers are of no use to you. As my dad always told me, never kick above the knee. Take out a mans knee n he’s not going to get up and hurt you.

Looking forward to recieving next 3 DVD pack I have ordered. This is very cool stuff mate, of vital importance in today’s climate of growing random, senseless violence against innocent targets. Keep it up mate, much appreciated by all who take the time and value their safety. Cheers

    Matt

  2. Will your techniques work against a Judo expert who is always shooting off his mouth about how tough he is??

    1. Yes they will, but be careful. Many of these techniques are dangerous and are meant to be used only in life or death situations, where injuries to your opponent are not a concern. I’d suggest looking over past blogs for some good joint locks or control tactics, these will quiet him down without needing a trip to to the E.R.

  3. Good move , but if the person isn’t wearing loose clothing .Then the natural thing for most people whom aren’t intoxicated be to resist with forward motion of the free hand which could end up in a head lock or a wrestling match and if the person is stronger or large , you might end up on the ground with him on top of you !

  4. Wow I love this one, I’m female, and five foot nothing not at all strong – and well the whole worlds taller than me. It looks so simple but very effective. I’m practising right now. Thank you

  5. These techniques like many real fight situation techniques will of course work. However, like everything you need to practice your technique, and as always in a fight situation, strike first, strike quick and strike effectively (accurately). And this comes from practice.

If you have only practiced a few techniques, be prepared to get the heck out of there. He may be pissed when he picks himself up. You will have his respect, but he may be a little to pissed to let that one go. Depending on how hard you throw him.

  6. Nice technique, but there is no leverage buy grabbing his sweat shirt.
Grab him by the throat, then push and sweep and slam him hard.
Hurt him, don’t just piss him off !
    Good food for thought !!

  7. Thank you, Mr. Serr. These take downs are easy to understand and remember. We regular citizens can’t thank you guys enough for these life saving tips. Perps take it for granted that we are not trained to resist and that we are not thinking while we are out. Not so these days thanks to Fight Fast Blog! Thank God that somehow I was able to connect with this site. You guys are generously doing a great public service.

  8. Very good move. But if the guy is wearing a tight shirt or no shirt all, can I grab him by the throat, push him backwards while sweeping the leg? Keep ’em coming. Thanks for all of your help.

  9. This is a very good move.I have one criticism that I think merits inclusion.Mike stretched the arm of his opponent with his LEFT arm but he alluded to the fact that he was reaping his opponent`s leg with his left foot when it appears that he is using his right foot and leg and not his left foot as articulated and indicated on the clip.Other than the left right issue this is one outstanding move that should be used when the situation arises.

  10. Havent taken time to thank you til now Bob, I have learned a great deal of very valuable defense tactics and have built a mental strength and awareness I cannot parallel! Thank you Sirs, please keep the video lessons coming my way, this knowledge is GOLDEN.

  11. Awesome stuff Bob. Learning a lot of valuable self-defense techniques from you that I hopefully will never have to use. But in the event that I do, I feel confident enough to know I’ll come out alright. The more I learn in this uncertain world of violence, the better off I’ll be. Thanks

  12. Bob,

Thank you so much for these useful, free tips. I really appreciate them!

    Very gratefully yours,
    Greg

  13. The technique must be reversed if the opponent has the other leg placed forward: you should notice that every time he was swept he had his right leg forward, ready to be swept. It’s important to practice this on both sides.

  14. Thanks again for just another fine video demo I feel for every one I see I have to say each one is packed with a library of knowledge and protective skills I am in debt to you guys thanks a million.

  15. It’s called O-Soto-Gari and it could work really well against a guy wearing Samurai armour. Though it won’t work so well if he crouches forward in a defensive Judo stance. It’s potentially lethal because when he lands he can hit the back of his head on a hard floor. I don’t see why you’d want this to happen before a fight’s even started. You could still get close enough when he’s trying to hit you, just by putting up a standard Boxing guard. And beware if you can’t make it work neatly and his instincts enable him to achieve a soft landing. He’ll be back on his feet, feeling perfectly entitled to hit you very hard.

  16. Is there a reason I can’t save this to Pinterest? I used to be able to. I like to share these with my near adult grandchildren, and I don’t want to join some other sight to do so.

  17. Nice move, quick and easy.I have used this move myself and most of the time the bigger guy doesn’t attack because he is embarrassed in front of his friends. But not always, so always be prepared just in case the situation escalates.

  18. Now that’s good but there’s often not enough advantage to take an opponents down actually prefer to decal a knee or quick inner thigh kick or punch if said attacker was to take lead in assault

  19. Very helpful and simple, it will stay in my mind and I know it really works because I have personally tried it and it has worked very well. Thank you for the lesson. I am 65 years old and I have used it on others in their twenties and thirties and well over 200 lbs. I have not had any problems taking them down. Thank you again

  20. In the street, when you are approach by the man, he is already swinging both arms ready to deliver a blow. I am in Oakland and in San Francisco in California, people are coming at you with arms up in the air and sometimes high and ready to pounce. their movement is ready and jumpy and their mouth is moving trying to distract with load shouts and noise. person are ready at all times, not like the video. try to do an example like that.
