My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

How To Pick Locks. (Who Needs Keys?)

You may find this shocking, but picking open a standard "tumbler" lock, (like the one on your front door), is pretty damn easy when you know how it's done.

And in a "meltdown" survival situation, (once the smash-n-grab crowd has stolen everything not tied-down), the food and water and secure shelter will all be behind locked doors, (which explains why Special Forces are often trained in lock picking... and why they carry a set of lock pics with them).

It's a lot of fun learning this skill, (it doesn't take long)... and kinda nice to help out that buddy locked out of his house after the wife discovered what really happened on that "no money down" real estate seminar in Vegas.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I enjoyed your post. I keep two in my car not always on my person. I like boots and don’t currently wear them
I plan to start. I have a variety of pocket and survival knives. I worry about someone turning the knife around in me. Though one time when I had to pawn one if my guns another customer was far to interested in my interaction. Because my driver license shows a post office box for address I had to get my car registration to ensure proper address for reobtaining my gun. This intrusive person made me very cautious. I returned with a very nice knife that clipped to my jeans and visibly tucked into my pocket. I was not worried about using it then and as I pushed it down securing it better as I walked back into the store with my papers the person suddenly left the store. Though like my guns, I have to practice using my weapons more. Thank God I haven’t had to use them yet. I enjoy your posts and offers. I just wish I was in a better financial
l situation to get some if the offers. That will change….Brenda

  2. Love your post!

You my friend are NOT a nut. I am way worse apparently, However please read my whole post first. I on average carry 7 knives and I still need a boot knife, I also carry a small sharpener with me. I was attacked by 2 people and they tried to steal my car. I’ve had 6 surgeries in the past 2 years.

Now like you 7 sounds EXTREMELY ridiculous, but believe it or not I use every one of them. I have a set that has 3 in the sheath so I’m carrying 3 the second I pick it up. I use all of them when doing certain jobs because they dull out quick as they’re throwers. I have the large hunting knife, worked great for gutting a fish and regular foods. Also all 4 are great in the car or other places you need small or large. Regular pocket knife with the glass break and seat belt cutter and a mini light too. Pen knife, yes I use it for small jobs if I need to cut something real quick I always have a pen on me. Last my belt buckle knife. That is my main defense weapon, extremely fast pull and nobody would ever know…but even that I use as a tool. I’ve been out, just going to the car real quick and found I needed to cut a wire or something and there I’ve put all the others away…but I’m still wearing my belt.

Knives are tools first depending on how they are used. I’ve pulled the one once in self defense and before killing anyone I made it clear I would if I had to. Thank God I didn’t have to, my point was made and everybody walked away.

  3. I take krav maga .have been training for 8 months .last week i was @ a ground fighting seminar and a guy half my size was on top choking me. I tried a couple moves couldn’t get him off .in a real situation he would have killed me. I carry a leatherman.which unless I pound his head. 2 knives is the ideal solution.thank you fight fast u guys are life savers. Irish frank

  4. I was recently ridiculed by law enforcement for having three knives in my pocket. They confiscated 1 and I have never seen it again. I went out and had to buy another one just like it because it was one of my favorites. To me and you is only practical to carry more than one but the law enforcement it appears to be out of the norm so they treat you like a criminal.

  5. After many years in law enforcement l hound most officers were more concerned about getting shot. I know this is illogical but there is no good side to either alternative but check it out.

  6. After going through a nasty divorce, after 21 years of marriage, I do not walk outside w/o at least one good boot knife handy! I keep a few multi task ones handy in vehicles/house/small backpack, as you just never know any more what kinda BS may occur at any moment! If that makes me a nut, so be it. I had rather be considered a nut (that’s prepared) vs. a fru fru woman that has no clue what to do if the SHTF!

  7. Living in Germany where carrying a knife is very negative and practically illegal. I carry 3 with me 2 folders and a fixed blade. All 3 of a different types and all real work horses.

  8. Hello,

I am retired military and law enforcement. I have carried two or more knives and other items for longer than I can remember; and for all the reasons you said as well.

Thank you for sharing. I hope a few more people will think about it and be more prepared the next time they leave the house.

  9. Hey Bob
Nice post…. I don’t think your nuts just ready and willing should the need arise….
Unfortunately for me carrying a large blade here in the UK can get me in to big trouble so a couple of good Gerber multi tools and two quality folding pocket knives live about my person and back pack..
As yet have not had to explain myself to much when challenged by the law enforcement officers then my work helps to justify their presence…
Stay safe from across the pond.
    Big pete

  10. My TRS Striker is my go to knife. The size, easy to open, and durable construction make it perfect. I too am a knife guy. I have many like custom high quality to knives that looked great and worked until they fell apart. This one I can count on.

  11. This morning I have four on me. My as the word is nowadays EDC everyday carry, Swiss Army knife 26yrs. My keychain which is also my beater, Chinese clone of a Smith & Wesson frame lock 18yrs. Other pocket Buck 110 light new to the EDC. Which I can open one handed. Ambidextrous, and a clone, 112 Hunter automatic.

  12. I carry one on my belt when I go out even to the supermarket. I have a big handbag with a tomahawk in it. And the trs knife plus seatbelt cutter and windscreen breaker in my car.

  13. Two is one, one is non, so no, you’re not crazy. With overalls, I carry a S&W folding hunter in the leg pocket, a3 blade Uncle Henry in left pocket, a Kabar neck knife, my Kabar fighting knife in boot and of course the Leatherman 300 for good measure, with cotton balls and fire starter in sheath. On special opps I’ll also pack my HD machete. Fire arms are nice at distance, but knives don’t need spare mags, long, wide, deep and freakwently, use the diamond sharpener and they’ll always perform. EDC USMC

  14. I feel naked without a knife, and always carry at least 2, a knife with a pocket clip, for speedy response and a pocket knife for other purposes, I hate to cut up a steak with a butter knife, so my pocket knife has a slim, razor sharp edge, and 99% of the time a boot and or a belt knife, I like to be prepared for anything.

  15. I’ve carried a knife from time to time, but currently don’t have one. That is about to change.
Realistically a gun is out of the question. But an old woman should have some type of defense. A knife makes good sense. Affordable and can be easily carried.

  16. I think that the knives are great but I will not order one.
I hope that I will not regret the decision..
    Thank you for the offer..
    The fighting lessons are fantastic..

  17. I’ll be carrying two shortly – the TRS EDC 5N1 for daily tasks (and backup combat knife – I have trouble getting it open swiftly, but better than nothing) and the Striker is coming as my primary for defense. If nothing else, this way I will know that my Striker is always sharp and ready!

  18. I carry 4 at a time. 3 straight knives and one folder. I carry one straight one each side and one in the back. I have a folder to do other tasks. I also carry the TRS Spike around my neck.

  19. Hi there
On my side I have a blade wherever I am.
    One on me
    One in the car
    One on the office
A tactical tanto next to me bed
A tactical assault in the lounge
Eis I just love them I even name them…

  20. I carry six daily, from my neck knife belt buckle knife each front pocket, and then of course the boot knife

  21. I’ve carried two knives or more, depending on what I’m wearing, for several years now. If I’m at the office, it’s two pocketknives. If I’m on the bike, I have two additional fixed blades in or on my vest–not concealed, just not readily identifiable unless you’re paying attention.

  22. When you ask a country boy to borrow a knife, his first question is; what you need it for? Makes a difference in which one you hand them, or if you even do. All you said in your post makes perfect sense to me. I like my swiss army camper and my smith&wesson S.W.A.T. Today anyway. Can you imagine a swipe across the eyes with that saw blade? Don’t practice that one, just keep it in mind.

  23. I LIKE YOUR THINKING AND REASONS FOR CARRYING TWO OR MORE KNIVES, I WOULD ONLY ADD THAT IF GOING INTO THE MOUNTAINS OR IF THE SHTF SITUATION OCCURRED I WOULD CARRY AN ADDITIONAL LARGE BELT KNIFE (SHORT SWORD, HUNTING) TYPE.

  24. Yes I collect Knifes and carry one every where I have about 50, some are Collectors knifes that will never be used.
My most prized possession knife is from the Vietnam.

  25. Howdy, Bob!

“Bravo Zulu!” as we used to say in the NAV.
    “Well Done!”
I love your new Blog just a little less than a keen knife-edge. Yet, I do tend to lean towards guns a little more…
But the Wife – well – she has an ‘illness’ called Knife-addiction.
We accept this and try to move forward everyday above ground – Amen
In any case, I am going to do some online window shopping for some Stocking-stuffer’s while the Mrs. is still sleeping-in on Sunday.
Hope you have an outstanding day, Bob.
    And thank you so much!

  26. I carry three everyday, it makes what ever job is at hand much easier! When ever I will be in an “increased threat area” I carry a defense specific knife not to say firearm and often a baton.

  27. Hello I carry three one is absolutely vicious it can rip out someone’s neck in SECONDS he was made for me by my dad Joey he owns a business zombietools check it out

  28. I actually carry at least three. I have one on my left side and two on my right. One of which is in the multi-tool I carry on me. My dad taught me at a very young age the importance of a good knife.

  29. I knew of a co worker, who was jumped by 4 punks. He tried to run away.the leader had him pinned againgest a walk and was choking him. The worker panicked and stabbed the aggressor 10 times in the chest with a knife and killed his opponent. The co worker was arrested. This was 5 yrs ago and he is still doing time.

  30. I generally carry a minimum of 4 & sometimes 5 knives on my person at any one time!!! I carry an axe, 2hatchets, a machete, and a Columbia River survival knife in the vehicle always.

  31. I have more than one knife, I even have a few “old timer” knives
I collect them as well, including a deer antler handle, homemade mini-machete

  32. I am a beginner knife nut and my wife hates it lol. Just wondering where do u usually get ur knives? I would love to get a collection like ours!!

  33. I personally carry 3 knives on me at all times. I have a folding knife accessible on both left and right plus I keep a fixed blade concealed in a scout carry position. I don’t think anyone is crazy that would always make sure to have a knife or multiple knives on them.

  34. I have numerous blades in my truck alone:
    1 fang
    2 tan to
    3 skinning
    4 fillet
    5 leatherman
    6 half-machete
    7 hatchet

  35. just received my tomahawks and added one to my set in the truck
pulled the blades out of the truck to take inventory and found a couple more stashed away the boss shaving blade, which is also a great boot knife and the stinger throwing knife
thanks for all the info and sh!t you folks put out, I don’t use em all but it’s still good to have em around when you need em
looking forward to more cool shit

  36. I can make knives. I am a blacksmith. Two is better than one Thanks for the tips. Iron sharpens iron.
