My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I have carried 2 knives for most of my 22 year s as a, police officer, they are beneficial for utility as well as safety reasons.I used to give my trainees 1 knife as well as getting them some knife defensive training.

  2. Two knives? Do you mean a folder for every day cutting chores (like opening a box, cutting a length of cord for . . ., etc.) and a concealed fixed blade used for potential self defense purposes?

    Sure, doesn’t everyone?

  3. Why just 2? I usually have 3 on me plus 2 in car. In Vietnam nam I carried a k-bar, a pilots knife, an orange switch blade (govt. issued) and a boot knife. There was also a good folder in my haversack.

  4. Yepper…small blade one hand opener in strong side front pocket for utility use, then multi purpose leatherman in side pocket for more heavy duty work and utility and last but sure as hell not leàst is my Fight Fast tactical folder in a chest pocket I can get to with either hand kept super sharp for self defense only.
That is what rolls with me everywhere every day but of course does not include at least one within reach in every vehicle and nearly every room of the house. Viva la blade!
Oh, and multiple firearms is another subject.

  5. I carry two knives and a box cutter. A few years I had five punks try to roll me in the Burger King parking lot. The business end of a box cutter on the throat will change someone’s mind pretty quickly. And then I told them I was going to get in my car and drive away. I added that I was a terrible driver…You never saw five people run so fast in your life.

  6. NO! I carry 2 knives at all times! One medium folder, and one 1.5 in blade for mail, boxes, and plastic packaging! I also carry 2 full sized multi-tools, and 1 key chain multi-tool!

  7. I carry 4 one in each pocket of my pants and have done so sense I was about 12 years old. I was raised on a farm as a kid, one of my friends had to pull his thumb off when it got caught in the gears of a combine (he could not reach the pocket that had his knife in it to cut the thumb off). This was a life or death situation and it scared me enough that I started carrying one in each pocket all have at least 1 very sharp blade and all have multi uses. Over the years they have come very handy. I am now 66 and retired but I still carry them daily.

  8. How many of the knives you offer are made in the USA. I do like my 325S Tactical Survival knife, but I would
have liked it far more if it didn’t have China inscribed on the blade. With so many fine knife smiths in the
US of A, I find it hard to believe that you have to go to China for a your offerings.

  9. I like to carry two knives. One is a pretty normal pocket knife and the other is a spring assisted Karambit. I like the Karambit for the menacing look it has because as we all know if you can put a little intimidation into an attacker that goes a long way. It’s one of those psychological things that just might make the difference one needs. Also most knife fight consist of slashing rather than stabbing. A Karambit is great for slashing because it’s curve and hook tend to deepen the wound. Some may disagree with this but you can stab with a Karambit.

  10. I’ve had an attraction to knives since I was a little kid. When I was in the navy I wore a Case 2 bladed hunter, mainly because that was what guys on the deck force used. That case was a very useful tool.
In later years when I was a teacher in Jr. high, I generally carried a Buck Esquire in my pocket.
Enough for now; maybe I’ll write more later.

  11. Personally, I have been carrying 2 knives since I was in my early 20’s and I’m 60. The bad part is that I have started slipping a 3rd in my left pocket. Watch out, it may be contagious.

  12. Yes I also carry twoknives. I use one for projects or to fix broken items. The other I carry for self protection. Being elderly and disabled I like to have as much protection as possible. In today’s world you never know what nut case you may run into.

  13. I am a bit of a knife nut. The best pocket knife that I have ever seen is the 325S Tactical Survival that I got from you. I would have carried it when I was professional soldier on operational deployment, but in normal life it is a bit over the top for my quiet life.

Even so I have several pocket knives for work etc. in easily accessible places like my tool box and the car consol.

Eventually I will be getting just about all the knives that I have seen at fightfast.

Again thank you for the quality and professionalism of your equipment and training material. I was a professional soldier and I still am a Aikido coach, plus I have always been able to tell quality when I see it. I see it all the time in fightfast.

  14. What can I say that you have to said. Like you and for many years before Ihave carried two, one I CSI my work knife and the I call my other. It only has one purpose and I hope I never have to use it.but thanks to the training I have received from your videos I feel confident I will be better prepared to defend myself. Thanks Boo

  15. Guess I’m or should I say… You are not the only one that does, as for years now I too have been carrying two knives as well, one is my multi tool with not only one but two blades, one used as utility blade ( plain edge so I can reshape not often and the second is the serrated blade that is never used to make sure it is always factory sharp) in its pouch on my strong side and a very sharp clip on in my pants weak side front pocket to ease of access with my other hand.
As I learned long ago. Better to have and not need, then to need and not have!

  16. I agree with the carrying of two knives, personally I carry three. The first being a small curved blade on a a leather strip around my neck ,the second a large folder on my hip,and finally my belt buckle has one .So of course I got to wear a belt therefore my buckle is always on my body, which is good ,when I can’t wear my large folder ,my neck knife never leaves my neck not even for sleep or shower. As for why carry so many?isay why not.The only thing I wish is that I knew how to forge my own blades,I believe the secret of steel is the strength of the arm that wields it.As long as the man is solid then so is the blade. That is my opinion.

  17. No, you’re not crazy but “prepared” and if a person isn’t “prepared” then they deserve whatever they are getting!!! I noticed your picture is ALL folding/pocket knives and no fixed blades. If you are going to carry TWO knives, my suggestion would be to carry a folder and one fixed blade knife. The folder would do all of the small tasks like cutting, slicing and trimming things and the fixed blade would do the hacking, chopping, throwing, and fighting if you had to. I would also suggest buying two sets of knives, a cheap set so if the cops ever stop and frisk you, they will lift the cheap set off of you. Keep the expensive set in you bug out bag or dwelling so that if the poop ever hits the fan, then there won’t be any “law and order” to worry about, you can carry what you will. Also, as with everything else, if you ever imagine yourself and/or family in a worst situation, buy the BEST quality knife you can afford if your life will depend on it. That isn’t the time to go cheap because you don’t need a blade breaking or chipping in that situation. And you might have to depend on that blade for YEARS instead of just a few days/weeks/ or months.

  18. No, I have carried a knife all my life and usually carry two (or more). Knife training is a basic part of self defense. Most of America is not a knife culture, but this is not true of many places on the planet.

  19. I’m a master scuba diver, and one of the first things you learn is redundancy can save your life, besides the obvious scuba gear the main tool any diver that I would be willing to dive with carries at least 1 knife…I carry no less than 2 sometimes 3 and insist on my dive partner to be equally equipped, this is not paranoia it is the difference between living to dive another day or suffer a horrible death watching your air supply dwindle while you’re entangled in old rope and fishing lines while exploring a wreck at 140 feet…I have always carried 2 while doing my everyday business, I have never until the last couple years ever considered them a weapon, I would suggest anyone who may consider a knife as protection should first pick up a few lessons from fightfast.com before hand or your advantage of a sharp pointed object for defense will probably get you killed instead of helping…What you think Bob?

  20. Hey Dude,
I always carry 2 knifes,a sheath-belt knife& pocket one. If I have boots on; I ‘ll carry a boot knife also. When I m in the bush or road trips. I’ll carry 3or4+a saw w/ 2blades.
I feel ur pain.My wife thinks I’M nuts too. I don’t sleep w/ a blade. Instead, I built a wood holder for one of my bowies& attached to the head board. Yes, I’m a blade-man!

  21. Depending on what your daily routine is, I think it’s a great idea !! With quick-opening folders, one thing I’ve noticed is the positioning of the clip: you need it at the other end from the pivot and on the side opposite your thumb so you can be opening it as you take it out of your pocket…..

  22. Good blog. I carry 2 good folders myself and have several folders and fixed blades. I have a passion for good knives, and when I see one that I like, I’ll get it.

  23. Nope I am the same way! I carry a assisted opening blade in my pocket and thats my gotoforevefything knife lol. On my hip I carry a kydex case that I made that has a super sharp throwing knife and a super thick strong combat/fighting knife with a nonslip handle. Both knives snap in tight. I’m from the “rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it” school of thought! I’d carry a sword or tomahawk to if society would let me.
I love the blog, first time here but I’ll be here often from now on. Thanks! Keep it up!

  24. Hey Bob,
When I first read this I thought there is no way you could have more knives than me, then I saw what you mean. I got into a stage in my life where I bought so many knives that ran out of places to display them. I’m not talking about $29 knives I’m talking about a minimum of $250.00. I have some I left the price tag on that say $500.00 +. The people I lived with thought I was crazy and that’s for sure. I did get a display case but it only held maybe 25 out of over a hundred. I can’t say I have any that are strictly for killing but I know they will all do the job. It’s just that they are collectible and I’d really hate to do it.

  25. The knife is the most deadliest weapon in the world!!! I’m
Looking for a Japanese steel pocket Knife that holds it’s sharpness.
    Can you help me out?

  26. I always carry one at least, but I also keep two in my truck. My dad was the victim of a car Jacking years ago and was shot in the process. He survived barely. I keep a knife placed discretely in my truck for just this eventuality. Using the distraction technique of giving in I will be able to access this extremely sharp dual edged blade and the carjacker will not know I have it until he feels it cutting his throat. I also have many blades placed around my home just in case. These include machetes and tomahawks.

  27. Perfect logic. I usually have a folding knife and a solid blade typically very large in my Bug out or my truck. M9 bayonet is a favorite. Folding knives are compact and have their uses but solid knives don’t fall apart from vibration. I have carried knives for about 35 years now and will never be without.

  28. OK, guys. Here is one gal who likes knives! I have a number of different knives, including two hand made ones I got at a rendezvous, and a sword or two. I don’t carry one, at least not yet. Can’t decide which to carry. (A multi-tool would be ok, I guess, considering this bone-head state I live in.) I have a few knives I bought that were touted as being great knives and they are so disappointing. I did get a straight blade one that fits my hand like a glove, but it isn’t as sharp as I would like it to be. On sharpness, I have a small hatchet that a friend of mind decided she wanted to cut her thumb off. She ran her thumb on it and it cut her. It is one very sharp hatchet. By SOG. Another little goodie I have is a dagger patterned after the kindjals. Just had to have it. Wish it was the real thing. I also had a real kukri, but it got stolen. That was great for chopping wood. I might just get another one and I have seen some I’m considering. The real one I had was 1/4″ thick! Dang I wish I had that back.

  29. I think I know I missed what this is all about, I’m sorry. I do always carry the one in my wallet, is it ever sharp!!! And of course the one in my left hip pocket + the one that is like a switchblade but it’s not. I know this because I got pulled over once and the officer just switched it open and closed a few times then put it back. I carry it in my jacket or a lose pocket cause it is a bit larger than the basic pocket knife. If you wanna talk about when I go hunting well that is a different story I always have the one on my side.

  30. I love knives, never have too many. I only get disability,so knives are my protector on. Someday I hope to be able to afford a handgun, till then bad guys beware of ripples like me. What you can’t see could be deadly.

  31. Only two I carry three plus a Leatherman or SOG with blades available without opening pliers.

  32. I agree with you but I usually carry a knife hooked to my left pocket and a monkey-fist clipped to my right pocket and a smaller knife inside the pocket and my gun in an inside-the-waistband holster.

  33. I carry 3, one in my left hip pocket a little one with scissors in my watch pocket and a push button, over the top, either in my jacket pocket or pants if my pants are loose enough. I have been debating on carrying the 3 throwing ones you sent me especially after watching the Expendables. Have you ever watched that show, I mean I do realize it is far fetched but if it is possible.
