My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. No, you are not. I may not always carry one, let alone two; but i have at any given moment 5 right this second. So who’s the crazy….?

  2. I carry 2 knives everyday one clipped to my pocket and a belt buckle knife. One good about the belt knife no one knows I have it.

  3. I think that “you’re crazy like a fox”. You’re absolutely right that “one is none and two is one”. Keep up the crazy, but damn good thinking !

  4. Only two? I usually have one in each front pocket, my Multi-Plier 600, and at least one “credit card knife” in my wallet. I’ve had at least one knife on my person, continuously whenever dressed, since I got my first blade for my fifth birthday.

My wife? She asked why I carry knives every day. I got her one, told her to carry it every day for a month. Now /she/ is never without a blade, and has her own collection to draw from…

  5. I also carry two knives, and my wife doesn’t think I’m crazy because one of them is a Leatherman Squirt with which I can and have fixed just about everything you can think of. The other knife is a single blade, one hand opener Gerber with a fine, tough steel blade that stays sharp and is in the pocket that I can get to most easily. Also, it has a cut-away skeleton handle that allows the single hand opening tang to serve as a finger stop when one is using it as a weapon. Woe betide the Wetback who gives me a bad time when I have this along, we have been that route when I was stationed in Southern California many years ago – and I’m still here to talk about it!

  6. No not at all, makes perfect sense. I have one for survival or two or three you get the idea. One for fishing and hunting, or two or three, one for the dirty work or two or three. Man has to a-lot of knives never know what you might need on or two or three for. I have to say, I lost my Boy Scout knife down the side of a cabin sill and i heard it hit the bottom sill. Maybe it is still there if the cabin is still standing. Happy Father’s Day Bob. If you are one. Have to teach them how to use a knife for when they made need one or two or three!

  7. I have carried two eed open knives for ten years along with my Glock in a miami rig.
left and right pocket clip ons. Plus two spare mags.

  8. I too carry two knives just as you. My trusty beater and the one I carry when away from the cabin. I am with you on this one.

  9. knives is one of my things also. I lost count of how many, but probably close to 100 and of a lot of different types. We used to have a saying when I was working that you always had to carry two in case you lose one in a bad situtition

  10. I carry my edc knife, a multi-tool with a knife, a tactical pen and a tactical flashlight everyday. If I go into the woods I strap on a fixed blade and a concealed pistol, with all my other gear I already carry. I’m never without, whether I’m home or at work and I’m a nurse. You can never be sure of what will happen but, you can be prepared!

  12. No you’re not crazy, I usually carry three. The survival knife, tactical knife and the smaller pocket knife. So to me you’re not crazy, just sensible.

  13. I’ve been carrying a pocket knife since I was a kid of 7. My dad gave me my first. I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve had to need defensive but I’ve thought about it. Carrying and ease of access is most important. Size isn’t necessarily the most important. Sharpness and balance is.

  14. I carry 2 on my person daily plus another and a multi tool in my bag with my laptop and all other edc gear (yes that includes a fire starter, flashlight, etc) It only makes sense to have available the minimum tools needed when it really is no inconvenience to do so. I can’t tell you the number of times I’m asked if I have a knife or light etc and have been able to help out in a situation.

  15. You make a good point, I never thought of it that way. I carry only 1 knife, but from now on I’m going to have a backup. Thanks for opening my eyes.. I appreciate your thoughts..

I also have one of the Spikes I got from
    Fightfast.

  17. Bob,
I’ve ALWAYS got my pocket knife…I treat it like an American Express card,
I don’t leave home without it!

In addition my backpack, glovebox, bedside table, jacket or coat, and girlfriend’s purse all hold blades as well.

I don’t consider it odd. These tools are extremely versatile and helpful in so many situations that don’t involve personal protection. The fact they DO act as a safety implement is an added bonus that brings me peace of mind.

You’re not crazy, far from it.

    Keep on keeping on!

  18. I keep a quick release w/a clip in my r/front pocket a 4″ blade boot knife in my boot, plus a small razor sharp pocket. Plus a .40 calaber CZ on my belt w/ 180 grain jhp bolistic tip bullets, Ga. Boys don’t play.

  19. I’ve never thought of carrying 2 knives before. Thank you so much for sharing. This last weekend my 2 knives were stolen so now I don’t have but a small one with a small blade. I trusted the wrong person. I had you Hoffman Reicher pocket knife and a black tactical knife. I feel last with out them. I plan on replacing them when I see them again. When I get them again I will always carry 2 for now on.

  20. No you are not crazy for caring two knifes I have bin caring two knifes on me for soo many years matter of fact I feel naked with out I go nuts when I travel on a plane because I can’t carry my knifes (also my guns and other survival tools) cause airports will give me a hard time so I don’t even attempt and my fiance will be mad as hell waiting for me but your knife I believe is a must have on you at all times it is a great tool for soo much I use my knifes every day for something it is not just for self defense but still good to have for self defense but in sort and sweet a good man a true man has a knife and carries it always and just always finds use for it and then is grateful to have it cause of how it aids him and others around see this then they go and get one and like me and others they to find themselves always using it

  21. I have carried two or more knives for years. I always have my pocket knife plus a knife for utility and sometimes a fixed blade. When I am out riding my horse I usually have my knives on my person plus a couple in my saddle bag. So don’t think you are crazy . They all have their purpose. Side note; my beautiful wife thinks that carrying my pocket knife is sexy.
PS My collection makes the photo you show look small. As far as legality goes, I live in Arizona which is pretty good about carrying knives and guns for the law biding citizens.

  22. I carry 3-4 knives also two are in pliers I carry for all of the same reasons and my wife thinks I’m nuts too

  23. Hi Bob, I collect and work on them. when I hunt I carry a hunting knife to gut & skin animal. Also usually carry a second knife for backup..used to be a case xx stockman now usually a SOG tool knife in case I need screw driver for scope mount adjustment etc. Funny my friends know I always carry a pocket knife of some sort as I live in a cabin in the woods & use it daily. I have given most of them knives but they borrow mine because they say I made theirs two sharp to carry. (?) I have a black belt in tai kwon do went to a demonstration by two g.i.s who were martial arts instructors they had several knives on their person & put on a pretty impression. Most people would only expert you to have one on them. When we were kids we all carried pocket knives with us usually either a stockman or a BSA camp type with bottle opener screwdriver etc. Now parents are freaked out by the idea of their kids having a knife…they see them as weapons rather than useful tools. We used to play mumbly peg in the back yard & no moms worried about us, we hunted, fished, etc & I don`t remember any of my friends having any accidents or hurting anyone as we were trained & taught manners & respect. I don`t see any of the knives you sell on your picture of your collection?

  24. I’m more weird than you. I carry two survival knives inside my waistband, under my belt. One on either side of my zipper. Also a two blade Buck pocket knife in my right front pocket. One blade is sharpened normally, and the other is sharpened to a chisel edge for cutting metal. There is a Buck mini in my left front pocket. It has a short lanyard with A G Russell tweezers on it. There is always a serious Leatherman on my right hip.
I’ve carried a knife for more than 70 years and never cut anyone except myself. There has been an occasion or two when I chose to clean my fingernails to influence someone who appeared to be a little aggressive.
I like your EDC 5N1 for the many features.

  25. I certainly carry one that was given me by my mother whenever I am wearing jeans. Now that I am collecting more I’ll choose a second one!

  26. Well if you are crazy then I am REAL CRAZY. I carry 3 stinger throwing knives in 1 pocket, 1 neck lace knife around my neck and under my shirt, 1 key/ utility knife on the outside of my shirt,1 comb knife in my shirt pocket, a spring assist knife inside on the neck of my shirt and 1 pen knife in my shirt pocket. Because you never know what you will need 1 for or when you will need it.

  27. No, I carry a full size Infidel (Benchmade), left front pocket, small Gerber liner lock in my right, and the smallest Swiss Army Victorinox in the right lighter or small accessory pocket. So I guess that makes me certifiable by your standards. Keith A smith

  28. I do good carrying one. But I do have credit card knife and another I got another one from Fight Fast. So now I am a 2 knife carrier.
