How to Tell if Someone is Spying on You by Derek Smith

As a special agent working counterintelligence one of the things I often had to worry about was if someone was using the same techniques I was using to spy on them to spy on me. If your “sixth sense” is telling you that someone is spying on you or your family, you are probably correct. Would you like to take away your doubt and know for sure? If you answered affirmatively, you are at the right place at the right time because in this article I am going to give you some techniques you can use to determine if someone is spying on you.

In the age of technology and all the electronic devices that are currently in the market, spying on you is easier than ever. I am not suggesting that every single person in this world is a victim of spying nor that traditional spying is not around anymore. This is why I created this article to teach you how you can determine whether someone is spying on you or not.

How Could You Be Spied On?

Let’s start with how someone can spy on you. In the beginning, there were just a few ways that someone could spy on you. However, as technology began to develop, like telephone devices, the various spying methods began to emerge.

Today, with the Internet, many people are under constant surveillance, and the possibilities are literally endless. In this article, I am going to describe some of the traditional spying methods. They include:

  • Bugs
  • Hidden cameras
  • Breaking-in

I will next discuss the latest methods spies (or aspiring spies) use today, such as:

  • Cell phone spying
  • Computer hacking
  • Webcam and phone camera hijacking

So, devour this article and learn how you can determine if someone is spying on you.

Eavesdropping

Let’s begin with eavesdropping. Eavesdropping had been around forever. Spies and investigators have been using it for years to gather information on unsuspecting victims. Eavesdropping can be someone standing around and just listening to your conversations, or it could be by phone. You should look for any signs of a break-in around your telephone service box which is usually located outside.

If you see anything suspicious, you should immediately call your phone company or get an expert in eavesdropping detection to come out and check your home for telephone eavesdropping. A technician from either can check to see if there is a tap in the box. And if there is, they can handle it, but you have a spying problem.

Hidden Cameras

Someone can be spying on you using hidden cameras. These days you can get them so small that they can literally fit in a wall crack.

This is something you want to look for in your home or office. Or even in your hotel room if you are traveling. Here are some basic tips:

  • Turn off the lights and see if there are any LED lights around you
  • Check mirrors for any transparent spots that a camera can see through
  • Buy and install camera detection devices

Keep in mind that today, people can even use your own cameras to spy on you. They can hack into your smart television or baby monitors and use them against you.

Breaking-in

Breaking-in is not a sophisticated method for spying on you, but good old fashion breaking in is still a viable method. Not everyone has the skills to break into a house unnoticed, so they can install the equipment needed so you should be able to detect if someone has. Here are some tips to check for break-in.

Examine your locks to see if they have been picked. Some indications include:

  • Bends in the keyholes
  • Your keys are not working as smoothly as before
  • New scratches

Of course, this means that you should already know what your locks look like. Ask your neighbors to keep their eyes peeled and consider buying an outdoor surveillance video camera. Also, you may want to set up little alerts to let you know that a door or window has been opened by someone breaking into your home.

Cell Phone Spying

Using a cell phone is a little more sophisticated method for spying on you. There are so many types of software out there for facilitating this, and plenty of YouTube videos will demonstrate how it is done. But how can you know if someone has been hijacking your phone? Well, the indications are simple, but they are getting harder and harder to notice as technology evolves. Here are some basic signs to look for if you believe that your phone has been tapped:

Check Your Battery

Tracking software running in the background requires energy. And that means your battery is going to be putting out more juice. If none of your habits have changed (like you’re continually playing an addictive game on your phone) and your battery keeps draining, you might have spyware on your phone.

A simple way to determine if the battery is working as it used to or is instead working harder than normal, take a look at how much time it takes to charge. If it is taking longer than usual, a spying app might be running in the background.

Check Your Phone’s Temperature

Have you ever used your phone for such a long time that, eventually it just started feeling hot? This is because that’s what cell phones do when they run intense software.

However, if you are not running anything like that (nor charging it) and it still feels rather hot to you, this could be an indication of spy software running.

How To Pick Locks. (Who Needs Keys?)

You may find this shocking, but picking open a standard "tumbler" lock, (like the one on your front door), is pretty damn easy when you know how it's done.

And in a "meltdown" survival situation, (once the smash-n-grab crowd has stolen everything not tied-down), the food and water and secure shelter will all be behind locked doors, (which explains why Special Forces are often trained in lock picking... and why they carry a set of lock pics with them).

It's a lot of fun learning this skill, (it doesn't take long)... and kinda nice to help out that buddy locked out of his house after the wife discovered what really happened on that "no money down" real estate seminar in Vegas.

Notice Your Call Quality

It is difficult to tell if your calls are being recorded while you are on your cell phone since many things can be blamed for poor quality service. Problematic handsfree or bad reception are just two of them. A small indicator could be hearing some echoing during calls. This could mean that someone might be listening to you.

What Can You Do About Cell Phone Eavesdropping?

Some applications can help you get rid of some spy software. But usually not all spy software. Apps like Anti Spy Mobile and iAmNotified are useful, but not as effective as a professional. If you purchase spy removal software and that does not do the trick, hire a pro.

Computer Hacking

Today, people can hack computers even without sophisticated skill. If you believe that your computer has been hacked, then you have a severe problem that needs to be fixed right away. After all, your computers contain every single detail about your life.

Unless you have the skill to deal with a hacker yourself, you will need to get some professional help from someone who knows how to deal with hack attacks. Hackers have many different methods for hiding their presence, and you may not be able to deal with that. Even with software you may not be able to deal with the hack.

One simple thing you can do is to check your computer password to see if it has been changed. If you did not change it yourself, you have an issue. Also, examine your files to see if they have been moved or altered and look at your browser for any weird pop-ups or toolbars that you’ve never installed.

If the hacker is skilled enough, they can even control your computer remotely, so if you ever see your mouse cursor moving like someone else is in control, then, most likely, someone is.

Camera Hijacking

Today cameras are everywhere. There are so many different apps with permission to use your mobile or computer camera, and hackers can access them in a matter of minutes.

If you are on a computer, the most popular clue that someone is spying on you is if the little LED light next to your camera is on, even when you’re not using it. This means that someone has turned it in and is watching you. The most effective solution for dealing with this is to simply cover your camera with a piece of tape.

If you are using the camera on your cell phone, the indicators are much more difficult to notice, but you can always go through your phone’s permissions and revoke access to apps that shouldn’t use your camera.

If in Doubt, Use an Expert

If you feel like you are being spied on, the best thing you can do is to contact a professional. You can find companies online that can help deal with all the problems I previously mentioned. There are other ways people can spy on you, but hopefully, I have given you some things to think about.
