Sneaky and Devastating Self Defense Takedown

The Art of Deception

The key to this self-defense move is having the element of surprise. You obviously can’t just walk up and do this to a guy who is threatening you. You have to deceive or distract him so you can get in close for this devastating takedown. The best distraction in this scenario is to make the attacker think you are being submissive. This is obviously a great tool if you are a woman, but it works well for men too.

The Setup:

  1. Deceive Your Attacker: Taking a submissive body position (a slightly slouched posture, avoiding eye contact, a weak soft voice) will allow you to get into the takedown zone without your attacker knowing what you are up to.
  2. Get In Close: Once you are up close you have the advantage in the situation. Bullies, predators, and attackers are most familiar with fighting in punching range. Successfully deceiving your attacker allows you to move into a position where you are too close for punches to be effective at all.
  3. Strike Their Groin: Once you have closed the gap, strike their groin and throat simultaneously. For the groin strike you need to use an upward-facing open-hand palm. When you strike you need to grab whatever you can. If you can’t grab their groin, grab the inseam of their pants because you need a handle.
  4. Pinch Their Windpipe: As you are striking their groin, grab their throat with a c-hand. If you strike with a closed hand they will move backwards too quickly and you won’t be able to grab hold of their windpipe. Once you strike their throat you need to dig your thumb into the space just behind their windpipe and use the rest of your fingers to tightly grasp the other side of their throat.

Following Up

At this point you have two very effective handles and the attacker isn’t going anywhere without causing himself a LOT of pain, but to make this self-defense technique effective you can’t just hang onto him, you have to put him on the ground.

Luckily for you, having two very effective handles is a good position to be in. However, it prevents you from escaping, and since you aren’t a cop, detaining this guy is not high on your list of things to do.

The goal of any good self-defense technique is to allow you to escape to safety. This requires you to use the handles you have to put him on the ground, giving you a chance to finish the job and escape.

The Takedown

  1. Sweep Their Legs: To put the attacker on the ground, simply use one of your legs to sweep one of his out from beneath him.
  2. Inflict Maxmium Pain: As you are sweeping their legs out from beneath them, pull up on their groin and push them away from you with the hand you have on their throat.
  3. Release Your Grip: At this point you will need to release your grip on their windpipe. This is especially important while you are practicing. If you don’t release the windpipe this could become a termination move.
  4. Fight or Flight: Once your attacker is on the ground, you must decide to either immediately escape to safety or to follow this self-defense take-down up with some kicks (only if it is necessary for your safety).

DISCLAIMER

Any move where you are grasping the windpipe can be dangerous. As you can see in the video, Kathy completely releases her training partner’s throat as she sweeps his foot to avoid any serious (and potentially fatal) injuries.

  1. I like her style of fighting for women. It is great for self defense against males or larger females. If there are any videos of Kathy to learn from please let me know. Thanks.

  2. I found this video very informative. Being 60 yrs. old and a 5’9″ man, there is always the risk of being attacked.
By watching this, I may have a fighting chance.
    Thank you.

  3. This was very interesting video it’s interesting to see a smaller person to fight away from the larger person used to say, contact should be knees, nuts, and the neck she used to nuts and neck, to good effect.
    Another good video. Thank you

  4. Excellent moves for men and women. She sure was rough that guy whew. If she was my wife I think I would do anything to keep her from getting ticked off.

  5. My concern with her techniques are they all geared towards the groin and total destruction. When your life is threatened you save yourself, but you can’t go off on the slightest provocation. Some of your instructors understand this and it’s important to protect ourselves legally. Defense without anger or macho shows of power suit people better nowadays.

  6. It’s a great technique as long as you can close the distance without arousing the opponent’s suspicion, or if they close the distance for you. Ms. Long makes this requirement clear. I like its simplicity and clear effectiveness, even against a larger opponent. Just remember to finish them off when they go down, to prevent them getting up for another go.

Frank, if you want to hold back against someone who is seriously threatening you, maybe even let them take the first punch (hey, it could be the only punch in the entire fight), feel free… to get hospitalised at best! I would rather argue my case in front of 12 men than be carried by 6.

Minnie, yes, Kathy Long has produced the Kung Fu San Soo DVD set. I recommend it as being very practical and effective for the smaller person.

Danny K, if you don’t want to “grab another guy’s jewels”, then be prepared for a beating. Not many of us actually wants to, but one day, it may just save your life. And who is going to criticise you for doing it when they see the heap of pain in which you leave the attacker?

Stan, it really is not hard to strike two targets simultaneously and effectively. Just try it and practice a little.

Yet another great technique from Ms. Kathy Long.

  7. So far Cathy Long has shown the best attacks of anyone you have shown. All are simple and all of them so far can be performed by my girls in class. Good work Kathy.

  8. THANK YOU for showing us some defensive moves without charging for it. I am disabled and on disability and can not afford to pay for all of these DVDs.

  9. Excellent maneuver! I’m short and disabled, but I’m sure this is very possible for me to accomplish. Thank you so much! Bill

  10. Hey Kathy: I thought this video was extremely helpful.
For I am a Male of only 5′ 5″ and I’m an easy physical target for would be attackers. And I don’t have any self-defense skills or any self-defense attack skills. And I felt that this video on attacking was excellent. Plus like Bill is I’m also terribly disabled from Fibromyalgia Syndrome
All over. In the past I was attacked by two younger Black
Boys and I lost the attack due to 1). The element of surprise and 2). Due to my disability for many years. So
Please send me more things I could do in my case that would protect me from future attackers. I hope that this would never happen again, for anybody, I hope.

    Thanks. Norris.

  11. That is so cool, my sister was attacked in the past and she is always asking me for new ways to protect herself. I can’t wait to show this to her.

  12. Very good one, I would NOT have thought of that one, but now I’ll try to keep it in mind. THANKS !!!

  13. As usual, this is a great video. I really like all of your tips for fighting. I am 70 years old and can really use these techniques. Keep them coming!

  14. Since am short (5’4″) to be kind of submissive will work very good. I hope I never need to use this technique, but I will practice until I master it. Just in case. Also, I am a senior Citizen and really I need some effective way to defend myself.
    Thanks.
    Gerry Perez.

  15. All the techniques that are sent to me are helpful. I use these videos not only for myself but for my wife and two little children 8yr old daughter & 10yr old son. I like in a town that is very backwards and in traversed as well. There’s a lot of martial arts and self defense shops here but non that I would trust with my family. Could you help with some information on where and who are in your world reprable . My sons a seal and I’m a disabled veteran with multiple orthopedic issues. I have no fear in protecting my family one is cause I’m always saturated with weapons but it would be most rewarding to see them fall from something my family has inflicted on them. Thank you for all the videos and information you send. Could you help my family with my request. I live in Athens Tennessee. Have a blessed week.

  16. Bob, I FIRST want to thank EACH of your TEAM for the help, advice, (and MOST OF ALL), the SAMPLE that you’re providing us! I FULLY realize that these vids are a sacrifice to make, but we DO NEED them! And, SOME off us can’t afford the $$$ that it NORMALLY will cost — and is WORTH!

I’m 70 yrs.old, small framed, and partially, (right arm & chest — paralyzed from polio at 5 yrs.), and, tho healthy, & WELL adapted to functioning with my weak side still somewhat effective, (have some grasp capability, and mobility function in my RT arm), none-the-less, you’re providing me with action possibilities that I can adapt to my own capabilities.

So, OBVIOUSLY, much of what you folks are showing me HAS to be ADAPTED. None-the-less, they give me options that I previously didn’t know, AND, a SAMPLE, (most important!), of the “HOW TO” of dealing with such a scenario! The “submissive stance”…”leg sweep”…”throat grab”…and the significance of each move, and action, is priceless!

A HEART FELT THANK YOU to each of you! You’ve VERY LIKELY enabled me to survive in the URBAN environment approaching…at the LEAST, to get away to live another day…something my Wife thanks you for, ALSO! May God continue to bless EACH of you!

  17. This is a great defensive technique! Seems like it destabilizes your attacker and gives you good control to impart more damage on them if you choose to.
