Easy Takedown Recovery Technique

Don’t Be Stuck On The Ground

If you follow my blog or own any of my products you know that the ground is a dangerous place to be. In fact, every single fighter I work with would much rather fight on their feet if they had the choice (even the guys who consider themselves great ground fighter). It’s simply much more dangerous to fight on the ground.

The problem is that, despite your best efforts, you may find yourself on the ground having to defend yourself. If you get taken down, trip, or for whatever reason wind up on the ground with an attacker standing over you, you’re going to want to have a solid self-defense plan in place for how to get back to your feet.

Breaking It Down

The only thing worse than being on the ground in a fight, is being on the ground and having no plan for how to recover. That’s why I chose to share this video with you. I don’t want you caught in that kind of situation without having a way to recover. As former Delta Force Operator Dale Comstock says in the video, the number one goal is to get back to your feet as quickly as possible.

Using one leg and one arm to get back to your feet allows you to stay facing your attacker. It also keeps one leg free to create distance and hold an attacker back. This self-defense technique also leaves one arm free to protect your head.

Although getting to your feet is number one, you cannot let your guard down or put yourself at any more risk than is necessary. For that reason you should never be afraid to abort a recovery attempt in order to defend against a potentially deadly strike. After all this is self-defense.

Wrapping up

Take some time to practice this recovery technique. You want to be proficient at moving around and keeping your attacker in front of you. You’ll also want to practice the transition from this special seated position to standing so that it becomes second nature.

  1. I’d like to see this demostrated against multiple attackers. Grateful for what was demonstrated. It’s not a technique that would come naturally to the average person. Thanks

  2. I was hard down by a 44 y.o. ex-con just out of prison. My first thought, get up as my head was through the cheap wallboard and only a bit of my eyes out to see the hammer coming down to my cheek. But wait, stop, don’t move yet! The hammer head was falling very slow and my head was protected by the flimsy wall board.
Against all logic I stayed right there where I seemed to be protected and put my left hand to my cheek as it was the purps target, but he seemed out of gas. The next strike landed in my hand and I pushed it up just for affect and it was my lucky day as there was no resistance. Down it came again like a cannonball with the powder wet. This time I sent it hack with vigor but aiming high so as not to push the hammer claw through his eye socket and tore back his scalp in 2 strips. The 2 ladies he assulted were screaming “STOP YOUR KILLING HIM” and he yelled “I’M TRYING TO KILL HIM” just as the Police rushed in, guns drawn and hearing every word.
I did not charge him as I was informed be had VIOLATED PAROLE, had to wear DIAPERS AND COULD NO LONGER DRIVE. The part of his brain that controled motor skills was AWOL probably because I made sure when he jumped me that his neck slammed on the coffee table edge like in the Movie Red October. I was given 6 stitches at the KIngman Med Center and under Police Guard he was Stiched, Medicated and Diapered. The next day HE went to judge and jail and they gave me 30 days to decide if I wanted to press charges for attempted Murder. I used everyday of it thinking of that big SOB in Diapers. My Point: The web of the hand can be a terrible weapon to a cervicle vertebre as every muscle control nerve goes right through it.
One of the E.R. Doctors, after he was through screaming through his alcohol courage, said I did not hit him hard enough, but I think I did…… the ole Master Chief

  3. Rich, if you’re finding yourself having to defend yourself from a wheelchair I suggest you go all out. Any body that would visit violence upon the disabled deserves no mercy. No jury in the world will convict you. Assume a righteous indignation that no fool has the right to do this to you and/or anyone else, and understand in advance that there is nothing that you will not do, because if they will do this to you, when will it stop? Wheelchairs develop upper body strength. If you don’t already you’ll have an iron vice grip. Use it.
In this industry that field is referred to as “adaptive”. Go on and youtube some “adaptive martial arts” for some techniques.
And Russ? On the ground against multiple opponents isn’t a very good place to be, so you’d better not be there for long. Consider trying to roll out of it, or roll into them. Go bowling! Knock them down like bowling pins.
Hope that helps. Best bet is don’t be there!

  4. Thank you, Mr. Comstock! This could really help women who are knocked down. I am telling women about the pen knife also. It is open season on women and girls. Wake up women!
    Sunny

  5. That’s real nice! Step on his foot too and when he falls down he’ll dislocate his ankle. Then he can’t follow you when you walk away.

    Thank you gentlemen

  6. What are you going to do with multiple assailants trying to kick and punch you while on the ground? I hear about this quite often now. It seems rare that just one person will attack you by himself.

  7. The clincher is that leg rotation to take advantage of the opponent’s imbalance as he moves in. Take the forward momentum and convert it to the roll over – got it – thank you!

  8. them are some great tips hopefully if time came i can remember these tips. sometimes i forget to think has been along time since was traing

  9. This is all good for a frontal assault but what if you are surprised from behind and knocked to the ground with the person on top of you , how do you counter them to get them off of your back .

  10. I think of doing something unexpected like a roll-back, (it might give you a sek) if you practice a roll-back it is quite easy to get up

  11. Steve, if knocked to the ground face down you must spin yourself over on to your back. You can start that spin while falling any surprise you attacker with a face to face counter attack that will surely catch him off guard.

  12. very educational and informative tape Bob. It covers an essential part of self defense.
Many thanks for everything you do to help people,

    Don

  13. Dale that’s a great way to defend ones self when on the ground and your demo gives person on the ground a better chance of getting back into fight again and finally turning the tables back in your favor thanks

  14. I liked the technique where you hooked his right leg with your right leg then kick his right leg with your left foot on the side of his knee to take him down. That’s a good trip move.

  15. Excellent technique. All the moves are these video bloqs are very helpful. Jeep am coming.

  16. Looks like this is derived from Judo Groundwork. But you need to remember: The Leg Locks were taken out of Judo because they were too dangerous. If your opponent knows about them he could still grab your leg, then you could be in big trouble here.

  17. Everywhere we go is a war zone. Some are beautiful vacation spots, where you’re supposed to be relaxed. Your guard is down. And the enemy knows that, and they will use it to there advantage. Against YOU. Dale is in the sitting in the beach position. But he is also in a ready position. Nice. To take out an assailant’s knees. Thank you Dale C. and Bob P.

  18. Dale never disappoints, good training! My cousin, John Savaria who served in Iraq and taught combatives in the Marine Corps and Samurai, as well as various other disciplines of martial arts taught me this technique years ago in a basic self defense course yhat he instructed As a fellow veteran (USAF/NYANG), our oath of enlistment never ends, and it is wise to do what we can do to prepare ourselves for the worst, while always hoping for the best !

  19. Thanks for showing a new dimension to ground defense that I’ve never seen quite this way, to transition yourself from a sometimes uncomfortable prone sitting position to a standing offensive position to stay in the fight!!

  20. Dale Comstock is a good instructor so he definitely knows what he is talking about you have showed me this video three tomes before this please s how something different

  21. Excellent training ! I have a leg that wont bend like normal but the other does, so this senerial works to protect myself. Thanx again for good instruction! V.mtz

  22. I used a similar technique in a situation when i was on the job in an Eastern Euro city its very effective and a broken beer bottle nearby was equally helpful

  23. Have several of Dale’ s DVDs and am always impressed with his calm yet business-like demeanor. Thanks again, guys!

  24. As a female disabled senior citizen the first defense for me is actually being hyper-vigilant about my surroundings. Always looking around as to where other persons are near me. I have also invested in a flashlight that has a stun gun feature. I learned about a very cheap & simple self defense unrecognized by anyone, anywhere, unless a potential attacker has read the same information: a small squirt bottle filled with just plain ole vinegar! To be more effective I have my little bottle filled with Cleaning Vinegar since it has a higher acid content. This is a close range self defense item that I carry in the side pocket of my fanny pack bag. As a Female Navy Vietnam Era Veteran I received no combat training in boot camp. Enlisted females during my time of service were not sent into combat areas or placed on ships. My late husband, who was an Army Veteran. tried to teach me some defensive moves, but those would not help me now since I believe I have a permanently damaged right foot. I watched a video on how women can stay safe done by a State Police Officer a long time ago. Being very alert to the people around you was the first thing said. Not walking around like you are afraid: Head up, obviously looking around, shoulders back. In other words walking with confidence. Alas this is not something I can do any longer as to walking with confidence since I believe I now have a permanent limp. I have a very strong aversion to pain, & to very rude people, so I will not become a “scared deer in the headlights” if someone should get in my face (as the saying goes).

  25. Thanks Dale, another great video. Helps transition from a losing position to a winning posture. Once again, thank you for your service.

  26. As a 19 delta in the RArmy. POST VIETNAM Era and I appreciate you taking the time to put this info together. I am looking forward to the course and the additional skills. Thanks for helping to protect our loved ones. God bless America.
