Sneaky and Brutal Self-Offense Rear Takedown
Take Out The Threat
Sometimes for the protection of others it may be necessary to take down an attacker who is threatening someone else. In situations like these you need a self-defense move which removes the threat while not endangering people around you.
This video is a perfect example of a quick and easy to learn rear takedown technique that will take an attacker down very quickly allowing you and others around you to escape, or follow up with other self-defense techniques if escape is not a practical option.
Breaking It Down

The instructor in this clip is 5 Time World Kickboxing Champion Kathy Long. She is not only a great fighter in the ring, but also knows the kind of simplified no-nonsense moves that can save your skin on the streets.
After watching the video I’m sure you’ll agree. There isn’t too much that needs to be explained for this self-defense technique. There are just a few key points to make this rear takedown effective.
The first step to this rear takedown technique is to strike the outside and back of the attackers knee with a quick kick. It doesn’t take much force. This will cause him to lose his stability and lower his body so that if you are smaller you will still have access to his throat for the next part of the move.
Next you’ll be stepping forward while swinging your arm around to strike his throat with the bony part of your forearm. The goal is to put the attacker on the ground so if you have enough time to think about it striking down on the throat will help ensure that he falls as opposed to just stumbling backwards.
Either one will work in most self-defense situations but putting him on the ground gives you more time to escape. The scenario at the end of this clip shows one of the many real life situations where this fighting technique can be used.

Really effective. I like that move. Thanks.
I love those videos. If I can ever get back up on my feet financialy, I’m going to order all of them that I possibly can.
Does anyone else think she enjoys doing that a little too much?? lol
sweeet
very imppressive
Nice!
That’s a badddd lady right there!
Kathy Long is a true martial arts icon, a 5 time World Kickboxing Champion and Black Belt Hall of Fame legend. Her nickname is, “Queen of Mean”. Chuck Norris said, “…she’s the best female fighter I’ve ever seen.” This video clip shows you why!
Looks like a effective move , should work in that type of scenario , regardless where Miss Long enjoys what she does or not , it’s only those whom are not prepared end up on the loosing end of a attach !
hahahar,i love the atm sequence.
a furry blur, and the robber has a roll about, holding his neck in!
hahahahaha,great!
This is a great move, do him leave in a hurry . Thanks Chief
Thank you, Ms. Long! Beautiful move! More weapons in the female’s arsenal! Thanks
again for the life saving tips.
Sunny
Simple but effective…I like it.
Ah Roland, old stick, simple is always better especially when you are adrenalized.Good old Kath never disappoints with her material and this irimi nage that she has demonstrated is one of the better moves in Aikido and obviously works well on the street. In a life threatening situation I would NOT hesitate to utilize this move but the side kick should be sufficient in a non life threatening situation.Legal and court costs can be a bitch and receiving a strong forearm across the throat could seriously damage or even kill your adversary.I would be inclined to stomp the heel once the adversary is down or collapsed. If they can`t stand they can`t fight and a stomp on the heel works every time.
I heard that if someone tries robbing you at an atm, put in your pin backwards and money will come out, but it will be stuck and it will trigger the police that you are being robbed. -3-
Love the back of the knee kick! Thank you!
Love the tips for the women!
Sunny
Very wicked but very effectiive. Thanks for another great tip!
Thanks, Good post.
Looks like a very effective move.
I’ve used much similar moves when needed. This is a very effective and simple move to add to your arsenal.
Kathy you are one of the most interesting of all defensive teachers around I only wish more woman had your skills and training I think more men attackerswould think twice before planning to rob or hurt woman for no reason great job Kathy. Joe liguoti
Great information.
EXCELLENT
fast and easy, thanks
Great technique. That spinning around works even from a front attack. Very nice..
Great move I would Love to try it wish someone would try that on me !!!!!
That is great
Jupp, thats the way we like it.
Straightforward and effective. Please post more of these simple but devastating moves. I personally found out, the hard way, that the street is nothing like the dojo. The dojo has nice flat, open, spacious training areas. The street has steel parking meters, sign poles, parked cars, curbs to fall from and lose your balance, etc. With all the dojo training I had, I learned that it just did not translate to the everyday world we live in. We, or at least I, would really appreciate more real-world videos showing real-world techniques. Thanks.
Awesome take down. Thanks for sharing.
That’s great stuff will come handy when you need it
That move is simplicity in itself to learn and must be highly effective to ruin the intententions of a would-be assailant or mugger especially with the knuckle punch to the throat which caused my anus to blink a few times not to mention the assailants backside…..
Been in quite a few street fights myself… N yes that move there would definitly b very effective. Nice post. Post more if possible.
Kathy long is best female fighter I have seen in a long while she’s second to none I learned a lot from her as a man I am proud to learn self defense from a woman as skilled as she thanks a million.
Very good thanks
WOW! Good one!
Kathy Long is Definitely one of the Best Instructor I’ve Seen Bob ! No Hesitation! Perfect Execution of a Specific Fight Move – S. Biggs
Brilliant move, she a fighting machine…just shows that you can be any size, knowing the right moves, can save your life in this veido some one else.
Me gustaría ver que otras alternativas pueden ejecutarse en condiciones reales; ya sea en la calle, terreno disparejo y enemigo en movimiento.
Whoa…noice, this is great. This move works very well, and he can’t follow you, he’s too busy nursing his throat. I like this.
What an awesome move to get a thug to stop his bullying thanks Bob.you have undoubtedly saved many a person from becoming a statistic.
Another great effective and easy move to help someone else or maybe in another situation as well. Great move but then I really expected no less. These moves usually are. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Do you have d v d with all of your self defense moves that I could get for my Daughter and my Wife??
Hey Kathy, nice strike/follow up combination! I’ve practiced PPCT and martial arts for many years but will never fool myself either. When SHTF, I always have a ‘back up parter’ that has no problem in dispatching a wanna be gangster. It is he who dictates the increase in using more or less aggression. Take care and until next time, watch your six!
Guess they found out the hard way that ladie’s no joke!
Great more. I’d show my wife but she might use it against me!
Maybe it would be advisable to attack on his other side. Otherwise f he’s threatening somebody with a knife you might find out too late.
Almost anyone can do this. Awesome and thanks.
Great video but you’ve offered it before. Always good to refresh though!
Easy and quick technique .
