Stunningly Simple Japanese Neck Throw

A Simple Defense

The “rag doll” grab is a very common fight move used by attackers who have blown their top. It’s often a way for them to “amp” themselves up to more damaging moves like punches and elbow strikes. You don’t want to let that happen. That’s why I’m sharing this video clip with you. Lucky for you, the “rag doll” grab, where an attacker takes hold of you by your clothing and jerks you around, is a pretty easy one to defend against.

Breaking It Down

First off, both of the attackers hands are occupied gripping your clothing. This means you’ll have both hands free to take him out. Second, he’s probably so preoccupied with his emotions he won’t be ready for what’s about to happen to him.

Step 1: Open With A Distraction Technique

  • As with many good self-defense strategies, it’s best to start off with a painful and quick distraction technique.
  • In this case we’re opening with an eye gouge, which will cause his focus to go to the pain and fear this move temporarily creates.
  • While he’s focusing on how much pain he’s in, you want to prepare to hit him with a kick to the inner leg.
  • The goal here is obviously to take out his base.

Once you’ve inflicted a hefty amount of pain and have taken out his base, you are ready to move on to the next step of this technique.

Step 2: Daze and Confuse Your Opponent

  • Next, you’ll want to go back up top with a brutal self defense ear slap.
  • Together these fight moves should have him dazed and confused, which is exactly how you want him for this devastating neck throw.
  • Note that while the neck throw may look difficult, it relies on leverage, not brute force. This makes it much simpler in practice.

This technique also works on bigger attackers. Billy’s assistant in this clip is a good 4 to 6 inches taller than he is, and the self defense throw still works great.

Step 3: Follow Up

  • Follow up the ear slap by putting him into a head lock.
  • At the same time, you need to squat down, lowering your center of gravity.
  • At this point your arm should be hooked around the back of his head while you grab his outside arm with your free hand.

At his point your opponent is in a lot of pain and should be too dazed and confused to properly defend themselves. This is exactly where you want them.

Before moving on to the final step, keep in mind that this technique doesn’t rely on brute force, but on leverage. This means that it is effective, even against bigger, stronger attackers.

Step 4: Throw Your Opponent

  • Be sure that your feet are not too wide apart (they should be on the inside of his legs).
  • While you squat down you need to tighten your arm around his head, bringing him further over your shoulder.
  • To complete the throw, you simply stand back up while continuing to pull him over your shoulder.
  • Standing up will take him off his feet and his body will “tip” over your shoulder, slamming him on his back.

Once the attacker is on his back you can escape or follow up with whatever other self-defense moves are necessary to quickly end the fight.

  1. nice. like the quick, spinal reflex injury stuff.
im a single father on a budget otherwise i would buy all you guys’ stuff.

  2. Thanks for some good info there. Since I have Cerabal Palsy, my back and legs are
pretty much worthless. This trick seems to depend, a bit more on the upper body and
will work a little for me. Anymore little tricks you may have, that would not require
much use of the back and legs would be greatly appreciated.
    My thanks again
    Dave Hanna

  3. Looks good, but probably needs to be practiced because unless one is really into this sort of thing, it just is not automatic in a real situation; and if you don’t get it right, you may just irritate the attacker even more !

  4. Good but a little complicated and not easy to remember when under pressure. Keep it simple come over with the right striking the jaw on the way then reverse elbow strike couple of times to the face and right rdgr of hand down HARD on the elbow joint to clear the grip and whatever finish you want. Sounds just as complicated but if you saw it it’s not.Accross, elbow, down on joint finish/Simple

  5. There are many counters to an attacker who extends one or both arms to grab you. The problem is what the attacker will do afterwards and will do it probably very quickly.
The real key to the counters is to practice your moves, in order to stop your attacker at the grab stage. Of course, you should carefully consider now how much damage you want to do when deciding what counters you want to use. In a real attack, you do not have time to think; after practicing, you just react automatically.

  6. That eye gouge is brilliant. I like to start with slap grabbing his arms first, followed by a fast groin kick, when his attention is directed to the low line… then the eye gouge, to the neck throw. Nice move with the hit to the ear, if you’ve ever been hit like this, even lightly during training, you know how brutally effective it can be…. thanks for sharing, this looks great.

  7. nice video and move. I almost got in fight with large gang banger at gym other day and I was going to ridge hit him in throat immediately then immediare ball kick guy was big mouth standing COMPLETELY facing me would have took him out quik

  8. Hey Bob, Question? On this defense, what happens if the guy’s grabbing your shirt has a much longer arm reach then I do.I wouldn’t be able to do the eye gouge due to shortness of armreach.Any suggestions?

  9. Thank you, Mr. Burke! More tools to allow us to maybe come home alive! Thanks to all Fight Fast folks for your generous public service videos!

  10. To me it looks like this would take a lot more strength than something like a shionage type of throw.

While I’m a big girl, A guy who would even try to shake me like a rag doll would probably out weigh me by at least 50 pounds, and I figure 100 would be more likely. Even with the leverage this throw gives, I’d really surprised if I could lift a guy that big over my hip. Of course it takes years of training to get to where entering and getting inside a guy’s guard is a natural move, never mind a shionage.

  11. Practice makes perfect. With discipline and dedication, this is an effective way of subduing an assailant. The eye gouge followed by a chin kick and subsequent ear smash should be more than enough to take the billigerence out of most,if not all, attackers. The throw is icing on the cake and completes the rout.

  12. I have studied several of Mr. Burkes’ videos to date. I appreciate his teaching ability and attention to completely explaining every aspect!

  13. I like this one – all reactions come in a fluid movement. I’m not sure the “ear slap” is necessary (after the eye gouge) but it couldn’t hurt your cause, right? Being of “lanky” form and old age, I usually end on my knees, on the ground beside the assailant – this gives me more power to the final thrust to put him out. I am on my feet before he blinks. The inside kick could come before the eye gouge, preferably with a pool cue instead of you even raising a foot off the ground – great video!

  14. Nice sharp and clean counter, potential for Adam’s apple throat punch to crush windpipe instead of eye gouge. Rest of follow through makes sense with alternative just getting away from attacker. Always plenty of options depending on attacker and your abilities!

  15. Excellent self defense tape Bob. The techniques are simple and effective. I am going to show it to my kids. Manny, manny thanks.

  16. Great move very effective against any attacker can end s threat really fast element of surprise thanks

  17. The key is the eye strike and the subsequent series of moves is very effective. I am going to add this variant to my list of hip throws. Many thanks Marine.

  19. I feel like adding the Japanese name would have been helpful, so that people who would like to learn more about the thought could follow it up. For anyone who wants to know, the throw is called Koshi Guruma. It is a judo throw, in the Koshi waza category. It’s hard to use effectively when the opponent is heavier than you, unless you can pull him forward to off balance him and set his momentum the right way. I am a black belt in judo. Hope this helped.
