Vicious Response to a Haymaker – Self Defense Move

If you’ve been in or seen many street fights you know that the haymaker (or looping right hand punch) is the default attack for many people. This is especially true for big guys with long arms who know that landing one good punch can end the fight. This weeks tip is about neutralizing the haymaker, taking control, and ending the fight quickly.

Although the haymaker can be powerful, it is very easily avoided or neutralized with a small amount of training. The key is stepping in and taking all the power away from the punch by intercepting the attackers arm with your forearm. By blocking his arm the punch becomes worthless. But you can’t win a fight by blocking, that’s why it’s crucial for you to strike him at the very same moment that you block his punch.

Intercept the haymaker with your forearm and strike your opponents solar plexus.

If you block his punch then go for a strike he may have enough time to throw another punch, or attack you in any number of other way. If you strike WHILE you block he won’t have enough time to launch another attack.

At this point you have taken the offense away from him and changed the entire dynamic of the fight. He thought he was attacking you, now suddenly he is on the receiving end of the fight. As Mark demonstrates in the clip above you can throw a straight punch to the solar plexus while you execute the block.

After blocking the haymaker it is important to quickly follow up with another strike like an ear slap

But you can’t stop there, if you really want to take control of the fight you must follow up immediately with more punishing strikes to prevent him from regaining the offensive. In the scenario from the video, Mark shows how you can follow up with an ear strike (which will temporarily throw off his balance), but there are many other options. The key is acting quickly. You could also swap out the solar plexus strike with a throat strike, your choice.

Once you’ve successfully gained control you can follow up with a shot to the chin, while holding the back of his neck or his hair. This gives you total control of his head. Now you can easily take him down using the hook step shown in the video.

As he goes down you have two options, first you can immediately run and escape to safety. Your second option is to follow him to the ground to inflict more damage or control him. If you are by yourself and can easily escape I suggest running and escaping at the earliest possible moment. But if you are with loved ones or feel that the situation calls for containing the attacker while others escape first, you can use the brutal follow up strikes shown in the video.

  1. I had a man cum to my house and kick off wish i no this move he said he was going to cum back so i buy this see if it help me out a a little man but i ante going to stand there

  2. What do you do when the attacker does not have paralysis of his left arm. The most likely scenario when you block his right is he will counter with a left hook. I have seen other videos from this site that show the attacker not using his left and some of the defenses you show leave you open for the left. If your gonna keep it real then do so.

    thanks,

    robert

  3. For some reason I can’t see the video. Is it supposed to be gone after just a few hours? Other than that, thank you Bob for your amazing fight videos. You are the only one that hands them out for free. Not only that, the moves are simple. No wonder you are the most trusted.

  4. Excellent for face to face confrontation. Can you show different orientations to defeat the Knock Out Game or would face to face be the most common orientation?

  5. Incredible- you actually include a video- all the emails say click here for video but its links to written sales pitch.

  6. I’m 70 years of age. I don’t look it or feel it. However, I know it’s a
matter of time before I get pounced on. The neighborhood behind my apt.
    building is full of thugs.
I refuse to hide. I will continue to take my walks. I am a Army veteran
but, it’s been a long time since I learned any fighting moves….That’s
why your web site is so important to me. I’ve learned a lot, and now I do
my walks with more confidence…Thank You…Eddie

  7. Is it very possible to knock the wind out of a big “fat” guy? I’m thinking unlikely. They seem pretty hard to beat except for their legs and knees, their slowness perhaps, awkwardness perhaps, and their neck and head if you can reach them. They’re the ones too that can grab you from behind and you can barely move.

    Any advice?

  8. Nice throw….I was taught never to use that technique if you’re not prepared to break the person’s neck….Not even a warning in your video
