My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I am a knife collector and always carry at least one but after the advice you have given me I see a clear reason to carry two. Personally I am lucky that I have never had to use one for self defense but a knife has come in handy for me in many other situations. Your site has shown me so many different ways to protect myself and family I don’t know how I handled things before getting all the help you provide. THANK YOU

  2. My grandfather taught me that a gentleman does not leave the house without a blade and a fire maker.

These days you’re considered a psychopath or a firebug if caught with each.

I do carry a blade consistently, one I try not to use at all so when I really NEED IT SHARP it’s right there in a hurry.

A second blade for everyday use is for mundane tasks and abuse this is a nice money/card clip that also let me ditch the wallet.

  3. I carry 31 small pocket knife for cutting things like ropethis knife always stays extremely sharp but it is small and has three blades I also carry a large folding knife in my left pocket and a clip knife in my right pocket The clip knife is usually very gullible use it for all kinds of things like crying getting greasy and just general utility purposes

  4. It’s always wisdom to carry at lease two knives. I carry a ZT 0301 and a ZT 0301 as my EDC. At other times, I may carry different blades. There may be times when a blade is a better choice than a suppressed weapon. Always be prepared.

  5. I’m with you. I normally carry one of my pocket knives along with my multitool on my belt. If I’m not at work I alway carry my pocket knife along with a small “fingernail ” cleaner in my back pocket. Then there are my toys in my vehicles. I have a thing for blades also.

  6. No. I often do plus extra in boat, car, garage go bag etc. never know when you might need one. ( or two )

  7. Exactly why I carried multiple knives on me as a Soldier and especially in the combat situations I served in. As you said, “one is none”! Even though I am now a retiree, I still carry multiple knives on my person and strategically placed in my vehicle in the event of an attempted car jacking or road rage idiot.

  8. Makes a lot of sense to me, you’ve just given me another tool to work with that just makes me feel a little more comfortable. Motivates me to learn how to use one a little more.

  9. I have always carried 2 or more knives for 50 plus years. I believed having only one was not being prepared. I had a friend years back poke fun at my Swiss Army Champion knife in a belt holster. She said “what do you need all of those tools for?” Needless to say by the end of the weekend I removed splinters from several people, tightened 3 pairs of glasses, stripped wire for a broken coil wire, and even used the corkscrew for wine bottles! Enough said! The old Scout, Sgt Dave

  10. I carry 3 knives. One is a small folding knife with a small (2.85″) blade for most knife cutting jobs (opening boxes, cutting string or cable ties, etc). Another is a larger folding knife with a glass breaking point and a seat belt cutting blade. It has a 3.85″ blade. And last but not least is my largest folding knife with a 4″ blade and a glass breaking point for cutting jobs too big for the other two. In a pinch it could be used as a steak knife. I would hate to be faced with a thick juicy steak and no way to cut it.It looks so barbaric when you pick the steak up with your fingers and start gnawing on it.

  11. I’m a CASE XX Knife nut as long as it’s a Genuine stag one , got my first one when I was 12 .

  12. I’ve been carrying two knives now for about ten years. A friend once asked me if I had a knife he could borrow. When I pulled two out of my pockets, he asked, “why two?” “Two is one and one is none” I replied. God bless him, he understood right away!

  13. 2 knives are just a way of life, one sharp special use including defence and the “beater”as you call it that we have to tune up regullarly because it is the first go to knife. Of course that oes not exclude others like the 3 knife hunting set I keep in the truck lock box or the quick access sheathed hunting knive in the door pouch for self defense. Too much? I think not, who knows I may not be able to access my CCW pistol in time!

  14. I AM A KNIFE NUT. I HAVE OVER 100 KNOVES AND SWORDS. MY ENTIRE BEDROOM WALL IS COVERED WITH KNIVES AND SWORDS OF EVERY DESCRIPTION. I DO CARRY TWO KNIVES. I ALSO GIVE THEM OUT FOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS TO MY FRIENDS. EVERY MAN NEEDS A KNIFE OF SOMEKIND. I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR ANOTHER KNIFE EVEN THOUGH MY WIFE SAYS I’M CRAZY. (I ALSO HAVE A PERMIT TO CARRY A CONCEALED WEAPON WHICH A KNIFE WOULD BE CONSIDERED.)

  15. After giving it more thought now, i will surely start carrying a knife just for utilty as well.

  16. Well I carry two knives, one has two blades the other is a single blade that you can carry in your pocket or hang around your neck, and I carry a 3rd on a malty tool pliers screwdriver knife,so the more the better. You never know what around the corner.

  17. I have been known to carry two knives, for some of the same reasons you describe. And I don’t think I’m crazy. Nice collection you’ve got there.

  18. two knives for me too,, at the least. One folder in the pocket, one fixed blade scout style on the belt, or in the boot, and usually a plier knife in the other pocket too, so, yeah, I couldn’t agree more.

  19. Nice collection, have some oldies in there. Kind of looks like mine but had no matches. Where are the non-folders?

  20. I love knifes, I still have my mine from teen age years. When my dad passed away, I got his four knifes.

  21. Hi Bob,

I have carried two knives for years. I always want a backup. I have been an outdoorsman for decades and have had several situations arise where I needed my backup knife. Also, in any kind of defense situation you NEVER know what will happen and when you could lose the service of your primary knife. I am not a nut, just always been into knives. I collect them and to me they are an every-day tool. Sometimes people give you strange looks when they see your knife and they are really freaked out when they see a second one. But not too many people fuck with you. Thanks.

  22. Well your wife would just love me . I carry four and some time’s five, one in right front pocket one in left front pocket one in right rear pocket one left boot in side and #five a neck knife and two hand gun’s one 40 cal with two extra mag’s and a Ruger LC 9mm with one extra mag and I have for years and thank G O D I have never had to use any of them but once in 25 years and that was quick and over and no one hurt but it did stop what could have been a bad thing.. and he had a knife ! but he came to a gun fight with a knife and that is stupid.. So for me tell your wife I said it is better to be safe than OH! what am I going to do now, I wish I had my knife or my gun , then its to late , she may be the one you have to defend…. we have fire extinguisher’s in our homes and cars and boats and r.v’s same thing..WHY because we never know what or when.. Be safe and thank you … Al Ferris Morriston ,Florida ps and my wife also carry’s. a 9 mm and two knifes, are we not a fun couple hahahaha

  23. Hi I am the same way. I carry 3 knives at all times. 1) uitility tool which has two different blades. 2) my HR – 15. 3) my credit card knife. These are with me every day. My name is Craig
One important thang. Having them doesn’t mean you know how to use them.

  24. I carry four. One beater. One for more detailed work. One spring assist for personal defense. One on my multi-tool. One large fixed blade when I travel or am in the outdoors. My wife thinks I am crazy too! Thanks!

  25. Carrying two knives is a good idea anyway. Being quite adept in the field of tactical knives, I trust only fixed blades in tactical, quick response situations. I’m never more than an arm’s length from some kind of blade anywhere in my own home. There’s a 5″ blade that lives on my day pack, in a flat, slim black sheath with a velcro cover, has never been noticed.

  26. Yup, three for me, Benchmade on the pocket, minimultitool with blade on keychain, tanto knife with window breaker and seatbelt cutter in compartment between seats. Thinking about it, going to add the tiny SWAK to keychain because I miss the toothpick and tweezers, lost one to TSA, pissed me off.

  27. I am usually in business casual at work so I carry a small folder that is very sharp and a small old timer that my father gave me as a going into the navy present. I keep both sharp as I see more injuries in my ED from dull blades than sharp ones.

  28. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the two knife carry, It’s being prepared. It’s a great idea, and you have so many great ideas, for being prepared. Thank you

  29. Hell no. I have my TRS325S in my frt (Marine style) another next to my wallet while walking about and two KBARS (also Marine issued – Vietnam) in my car just waiting for some dumb f*** along with pepper spray for my wife and just a “few” “Bowies” (homemade) under the pillow.

  30. Negative. I Am A Police Officer AND I Always Have A Minimum Of Two knives. One is a tactical folder. The other is a OTF into the event I get in a jam. I usually have a pocket knife as well and one that clips on my ballistic vest.

  31. I DON’T CARRY TWO KNIVES, BUT I DO ALWAYS CARRY A KNIFE AND A BOXCUTTER NOW – EVEN TO CHURCH. AS A KID, I ALWAYS CARRIED TWO BOX CUTTERS (I GREW UP IN A HOUSING PROJECT IN NEWARK NJ – WAS ALWAYS CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY, ALWAYS ON HIGH ALERT). I HAD THEM ASSEMBLED SO THAT I COULD DRAW AND OPEN THEM BY FEEL WITH THE RAZOR BLADE IN THE RIGHT POSITION (ASSEMBLY IS DIFFERENT FOR EACH HAND – ONE WAS RIGHT, ONE LEFT).
I GUESS WE’RE BOTH KIND OF NERVOUS, SUSPICIOUS AND INSECURE!

  32. I don’t have that many knives, I would have to do a new count but off the top of my head I think I have around 10. I love knives and always carry two, one is in my “Leatherman”, it’s not fancy but has gotten me through a few times when I was in need. The other is a 2 1/2 inch Buck pocket knife that is used for anything that comes my way where a sharp blade is needed. I don’t know why I love knives so much but I think it has to do with just being prepared and a knife is part of that package. I do enjoy your newsletter thanks.

  33. Dear Bob,

I think you are absolutely right in your thinking. Knives are a valuable resource for responding to a wide array of crisis scenarios and are, therefore, an indispensable piece of any well-planned survival kit. I have been known to carry as many as five knives at a time( I only carry two now: A Leatherman multi-tool and a Car Safety Knife with a two-and-a-half inch blade and a glass breaker/skull crusher!). I want to get the TRS Tactical Pen kit. That thing is a dream come true! But all the fancy gear in the world isn’t going to do you a bit of good if you haven’t taken the time to acquire the skills and knowledge you need to deploy that equipment effectively during the course of a given crisis scenario. Long story short, you need a plan, and you also need the knowledge and will to execute when that time comes. That’s where TRS and FightFast.com come in. They have been providing everyday folks like you and me with critical skills that are a necessity for an appropriate response to a crisis. And by the way, tucking your head between your legs, sucking your thumb, and waiting for Emergency Services to come save your bacon does NOT constitute a good survival plan for any scenario.

    1. Hello Greysen, thank you for the kind words. We work very hard to find the best real world experts to share their knowledge and it’s always nice to hear that our customers find it as valuable as we do.

  34. You’re not crazy. I carry no less than two edged weapons, and have one or more in every room of my home.

  35. I carry three, one in an upper pocket, a lower pocket, and if all else fails I have my credit card knife.
In my vehicle I have several in different areas, I would be able to access from any door or the back. Not paranoid , just always prepared . On top of that I have several in my BOB bag, when SHTF if I cannot access money I can barter with

  36. You’re not crazy at all; but, all our wives think we are! I carry 3 if you count the credit card knife. Wanting to find a Bowie for a wall hanger.

    1. Hey Don, we are developing a very nice Bowie that should be going into production in the next few months. It’s going to be a wall hanger and a work horse. Keep your eyes peeled for an email about it soon.
