My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I am a gun and knife collector, and I still have the pocketknife I got when I was in the 4th grade. I have hundreds of both, guns and knives I mean. I have had many handmade for me over the years. As a matter of fact, I am having a new Tomahawk made now. I can’t wait to get it. A well made blade is a thing of beauty. I am also a connoisseur of sharpening to. I am quite good at it, if I do say so myself. I like my blades to be, what I call, scary sharp. I also like the edge to shine like polished silver after the sharpening process. I actually enjoy sharpening knives, and I consider it relaxing. No, I’m not crazy, I’m just a serious collector. I decided many years ago that I wanted to be a real collector, not one of these guys that have 10-15 guns and claims he’s a gun collector. Thats not me. Well, there you have it. Enjoyed your write up…

  2. No Sir you are not the only one who carries more than one knife !! As for me for many many years i carried a knife in every pocket , most of the time there where 4 on me at any time , but that was some time ago !! I am down to only 2 at a time now !!! I love my knives and in my collection i have really close too 300 or so !!

  3. There are many reasons to carry and use 2 or even 3 knives. hard to find one k I’ve for all situations. Redundant carry will serve you well. You firearm can jam…break or run out of ammo….your knife generally will not. Knives are a big part of our edc tool box of implements for ulitility and safety. Won’t find me without several.

  4. I agree with you and even one up you in that I have at least three knives at ALL times in varied locations, including a really sweet dagger of a boot knife!

Further most of the time I am also carrying a concealed firearm. Protecting myself is important, but more important is protecting those around me that I love and care for!

  5. No not at all.I carry a large Leatherman on my side for all around use.I just ordered a BOWMEN BELT BUCKEL KNIFE. These knifes are razor sharp but short..I ordered the money belt with a belt BUCKEL KNIFE. Can you get these as I would love to have one for dress ond one for work. Thanks

    1. Hello Carl, I think the Bowen belt knives are pretty cool, but a bit slow to access in an emergency. We are working on a belt buckle knife that will deploy faster without the need to unhook your belt, I’ll keep my hotlist guys updated as we get closer to production. Any suggestions would be appreciated, we are early on in the design phase.

  6. I don’t carry a knife due to my workplace. However, there is not a room in my house that I can’t put my hands on a knife (or 3!) in 3 steps or less.

  7. I HAVE SO MANY KNIVES OF ALL KINDS,SIZES,SHAPES,HUGE AND TINY THAT I STOPPED COUNTING YEARS AGO,LOL…I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU WROTE(GREAT PIECE)BUT YOU LEFT OUT A COUPLE! I ROLL WITH AT LEAST FOUR BLADES AT ALL TIMES,ONE EDC,USUALLY IN THE 3-4 INCH BLADE RANGE,A LARGE STICKER KNIFE(SELF-DEFENSE,)A NECKER AND A BOOT KNIFE. I ALSO CARRY(WHEN CERTAIN TRIPS CALL FOR IT(BAD AREAS ETC.,)PEPPER SPRAY,STUN GUN,BLACK JACK,COLLAPSIBLE BATON AND OF COURSE WHEN I CAN MY GLOCK 40. NOW,OF COURSE I DON’T ALWAYS CARRY ALL OF THESE,BUT WHEN I THINK THE NEED IS THERE(I AM TRAINED TO USE THESE “FORCE MULTIPLIERS,”)I ABSOLUTELY STRAP UP AND ROCK EVERYTHING I NEED TO DEFEND MY SELF! THE BOTTOM LINE AS MY POP AND GRANDPOP WOULD SAY,”IT’S BETTER TO BE OVER-PREPARED AND ALIVE,THAN BEING UNDER-PREPARED AND DEAD!” 😉

    1. Hey John, nice to hear from you. Judging by the response to this article if all of our subscribers lived in the same city we’d have the lowest crime rate on the planet! Nice to hear that this country still has a lot of well armed independent minded patriots.

  8. I really don’t tell anyone how many knives I have, or where I keep them. I’m not a smart ass don’t take me wrong. Cause I’m not I just have always kept things like that to myself. Kind of like I don’t let anyone know I carry. Somethings are best left unsaid if you know what I mean…! But I will say this, all the knives I had in exception of the ones I have had forever, I have given to my great grandson…Like his grandpa he loves knives…I have told him no knife like no gun, is worth it’s salt if you can’t or don’t know how to use them. He has asked me to teach him how to use a knife and I told him that I will help him find a repeatable instructor so when he was done with his training he would get a certificate of training proving he was skilled at his trade. Sorry readers but THAT’S JUST WHO I AM. Your friend Lyle…

  9. I am also crazy I guess I nomally carry 3 if you don’t count the one in my wallet.

Well just habit being overseas a lot I Carry one for work and one that has tools and razor blade & knife for wood stuff and one for self defence and the wallet one that is quiet unlike anything I have seen here.
Well I guess there are fokes who use tools and having them close by are just habit from the farm…

  10. I carry 5 knives. #5 is a credit card folding knife in my wallet. #4 is on the leatherman tool on my belt. The primary #1 is Benchmade ‘Triage’ for emergencies, exceptionally sharp, break any kind of glass window, rip a seat belt in seconds. I don’t use the blade for anything. I want razor sharp when the SHTF or I am in trouble with a horse or cow on my ranch and must cut a rope pronto. #2 is large CASE lock blade with a broken tip that I carry on my belt and can reach anytime ….. cleaning horse hooves, cutting wire, digging, scraping …. you name it. #3 is a Case double blade trapper, secure in my front pocket. I keep it sharp and pull it out when #2 is too dull or I won’t hurt or break this knife. This is my second one since the original in 1964. I carried the original in Jr High, High School, College, 20 yrs in the military, and 4 years as a pilot for American Airlines. 9-11-2001 changed all that. I had it in my pocket enroute from Detroit to DFW when the twin towers fell. I never was allowed to carry it again. I went to work NAKED for the first time in 37 years. I had never ever gone anywhere without a knife. Case carries a lifetime warranty and they rehandled this knife 2 times. The third time they sent me a new one [no charge] because the size changed slightly. I still have the original without a handle in my cabinet.

  11. Well, i carry three, but i think you get the Point! Yes pun intended!

I have told you before that i was 101 Airborne Infantry during VN, also served on a Swift Boat later 67-68
I am now an old man but i will fight if i am forced to, what i would like to see from your people is some self
defense articles about how someone who is handicapped, or in a wheelchair can effectively defend themselves
    or a loved one!
    Peace Man
    Larry Mandrell

  12. You carry two knives I carry three two I pocket and i,have an old Gerber belt buckle with a knife in it. And I carry a pistol and spare mag.I guess neither wants to ever get caught with our pants down if you know what I mean L Shoup

  13. Actually, I have to agree, as a fixed blade in a knife sheath on your belt can get targeted and you have none. A back-up folder, spring action in your pocket can be deployed easily. However, my main do-it-all beater knife is in my other pocket… Yep, three are better than two – any day. Both sides are protected and you have a back-up. I have seen the videos on a man within 15 feet easily defeats a gun drawn under terror, stress, etc. The bad guys are the ones who start the confrontation and the gun guy loses, and the knife guy is at a disadvantage due to the brain freeze… However, I would rather take my chances with knife training as that is where the terror comes from… God Bless you that you never encounter the knife fight in the first place. But, you must train and be prepared…

  14. I think two are adequate. I don’t want more than I have hands for. Beyond that I don’t want to be a weapons mule for my attacker. I.e. attacker pulls one of mine to attack me with!

    Just saying

  15. I 100% agree with being prepared. Carrying min. Of 2 knives is simple & inconspicuous. You stated all the right reasons. Hope other take light of your suggestion.

  16. I have six knives I my pocket know some are very sharp some are for general use digging I dirt scraping. The shape one will shave and cut to the bone.

  17. Hello my name is Ray l agree with you and now I will carry knives and be ready also your a great person and know what is right way to go my friend.

  18. I carry several on me. One in my right pocket(dominate hand) and a assisted open knife in left pocket( weak hand). Also have a credit card knife in my wallet. No, you’re not crazy, just ready.

  19. Even though my Remington Tuxedo pen knife, with it’s approx 1 1/2 ” and it’s 1 3/4″ blades do almost everything I need done, it does not mean that I can not carry my Emerson tactical tanto also. Those two are my EDC along with my CHL Glock. Now at age 81 I may someday need two walking canes, who knows?

  20. Always carry at least 2knives, one a single blade liner lock and the other a large swiss army knife.
Never walk out the door without them.

  21. Just got my free knife Love It your wife is probably right mine is always right. Haven looked at DVDs yet but will. Thanks so very much Claude Paris been a CCW instructor for 20 years and Hunter Education instructor for 45 years life Member of NRA.

  23. Ive carried 2 knives for several years now. One i use for work related tasks, cutting sod, trimming trees, etc…. The other one stays sharp and is on the opposit hand and is an automatic opening knife. Very fast and VERY sharp!!!! And when hunting, I carry several knives. I also have my uncles KaBar from WWII.

  24. Nope. I carry two folding knives. One is my usual, do-anything blade, the other is a spring-assist opener. You can never tell when either will be a life-saver…..

  25. I carry two on occasion depending on where I’m going.I have carried 3. Two pockets and a double edged boot knife. That heavy duty
TRS knife you sent was fantastic. So f’n thick. One of my daughter’s friends decided I wasn’t worthy of such a blade and took it. He knows
he’s going to be FUBAR if I see him.Highly doubtfull. Is there ANYWAY to get another? Watch your six.
    Sincerely,
    Nathan R. DeLon

  26. I live in the uk, and the laws we have to live with are unrealistic if you carry a knife of any kind you get a £1000 fine and 3 years in jail, that is why criminals stab people with sharpend screwdrivers, the only exception to this law is under the religious freedom law that states muslims can carry religious daggers to the mosq and back home, and people have been stabbed with religious daggers, so i just take abrahm lincolns advice walk tall and carry a big stick. Stay safe yall.

  27. I carry at least 3 knives when I’m awake. And I sleep with one under my pillow and another one on a length of paracord in a kydex sheath around my neck. I get called paranoid. It’s on with me though.. People uses to make fun. But now they see me as someone who always has a knife, and quite often I’m asked if they can borrow one. My wife? Sure! My truck? Maybe… My knife? Never…

  28. No, your not a nut, I usually carry 4. Except when I’m doing construction or Planting in the Garden then it’s 5 or 6.

  29. I am a knife nut too but I’m also a sharpening nut if I slept with multiple blades I would be sliced to ribbons lol I do carry fixed and folding at the same time I always believe in back up

  30. WEll generally I carry three knives , sometimes more and have for many years, you just have remember where they all are. , sometimes my smaller so called jack knives get used at least once a day if not more. One of my knives is always a fixed blade , backed up by a quality folder with one hand opening . I feel comfy withe knives I choose , the fixed blade gets changed out every few weeks or so for a different blade or a new one that I have not carried yet. #Every fixed blade seems to ride just a bit different, I keep a Tanto fixed blade under my pillow or right next to my gun on the bed stand next to me , also within arms reach a machete and a vechawk , overkill , maybe, but makes me sleep at night a little better. in my mancave (where I spend a great deal of time writing and working on gear) I have knives stashed every where along with several machetes . A good sharp knife has been whipped out while dining out when the streak knife provided is dull. My Swiiss Army knife, an outrider , is always useful at times, for splinters etc. I feel having these knives on me they doing the best duty they were made for , protection and utility.

  31. Next to firearms upgrades, fixed blades are my passion. Besides carrying a hidden compact frame 9mm ALL THE TIME, I have at least 3 fixed blades on me. (even at work. SSHHH !!!!) I have even started forging my own fixed blades from throwing knives to tomahawks. I took the time, did the research, and started experimenting until I got a workable process. I have made custom fixed blades for each one of my son’s birthday, and even made a double sided katana blade for my cousin. (measures just over 5′-2″)

  32. yeah I’m a knife nut , I also carry two most of the time , you never know what might happen, I also have a knife on both sets of keys a mini applegate (gerber) on one set and swiss army on the other , there very handy. I’ve been wanting to check into throwing knives and neck knives, one of these days I’m going to get those throwing knives you offer, up until now I just hav’ent had the extra cash, hopefully I will have it soon, you offer a great deal and i appreciate it , thanks .
