My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

World's Fastest Drawing Knife.

You wanna try out the fastest drawing knife on the planet? Good. Because here's your chance to get it for FREE.

It even comes with a video showing you exactly how to draw this folder from your pocket (one-handed) so that it snaps open and is ready for action in the blink of an eye. (Your buddies are going to be sooo freaked out when they see this).

  1. No i carry a minimum of 4 knives on me all the time.i carry a gun when i can but i always have my knives.

  2. Reading you’re article, I’m feeling a little better. I’ve been carrying 2 for over 20 years. When I’m on duty an extra one on the back of my may pouch.

  3. Hello, Bob! I carry just one knife so far. Am I a loose cannon with this affair? In Canada, I’m supposed see in the confusion and hear the noise. Does this dimension happen in the U.S.A.? I’ve encountered the new Canadian. I think I’m going to join him, but also carry my survival knife. Methinks we’ll be just fine! Sincere, MLMaddess.

  4. You are not alone! I carry at least 3 knives every day. My Grand kids gave me a Buck 110 I carry on my belt to use at work cutting rope and straps. I also carry an Old Timer Trapper model I’ve had for decades. I keep the clip point blade shaving sharp and use the blunt tipped blade for grunt work so I don’t break the tip of the clip point. Lastly I always have a self defense blade. Mostly I carry Cold Steel Recon 1’s (I own all 3 blade types) but I do rotate in others when the mood strikes, including one I purchased from you that I just love! I have big knives that I keep for special circumstances like hunting or to throw in a travel bag but that’s different!

  5. No your not. I care three or four knifes on me during trapping season. I generally have at least two or three good skinning knives. Then a general purpose knife to cut brush, twigs, rope, etc. this one also doubles as a camp knife. Last but not least is the survival knife with all it’s included goodies. FYI, I also carry a small survival bag of things I want along with me in case I get stuck in the woods for a few days. The old time mountain men called it your possables bag. Generally has fire making gear, small first aide kit, solar blanket, compact food or energy bars, toilet paper and sharpening stick or stone.

  6. Hey Bob,
I think it’s just good practice to carry a couple of knives at all times. I have my giant Swiss Army knife in my belt pouch, and a have a Buck Knife, that I usually strap to my leg when going out. I also carry my .45 at all times. No one knows when it will happen… but we all agree that it will… and each day brings us closer to when it does. Eventually the inevitable will happen. And Luck favors The prepared. Living in AZ has advantages, such as Constitutional Carry Rights. It’s not necessary to carry a CCP. As a single father, I take protection very seriously.
Thank you for inviting me to the blog spot. ?

  7. No you are not crazy, I carry two knives and my spike! You never know when one of them is the closest to you or the one that comes into my hand first. Knives are the easiest to carry and easiest to use. I am a single woman and need as much protection as I can get. Love the self defense videos too. They are very helpful. Thanks

  8. Not at all. I carry a Emerson commander reserved only for one purpose, never pulled in anger. A SOG card knife for general use that does not intimidate. A Swiss army cyber tool for quick access to screwdrivers, torque bits, scissors, cutting and ballpoint pen. A Gerber multitool for heavier duty pliers that don’t pinch the hand, metal saw blade. A gentlemans folder. In my office and car are heavy duty fixed blades. Now my wife took my skeleton folder and has large and small kitchen knives stashed in different rooms and in the garden. Don’t get started on lithium flashlights and headlamps!

  9. I always carry two folders, one small folder in my pocket, one credit card type, and one in a sheath. NO, you are not crazy but prepared. I also have the SPIKE and since I am retired law enforcement, a firearm. Better have them, never need them then to need them and not have them.

  10. No your not Crazy Bob – Never throw Caution to the wind. Always be prepared for the unexpected.I carry three blades in my vehicle, two in my camera case & two on my person. I’m X Military 1st PPCLI – learned all this back in 1960 – I was 17 years of age & wet behind the ears back then. Keep up the Good Work my Friend – Take Care

  11. OK I guess I am a nut as well. I carry 2 knives as well. One is a utility knife and one for protection. I also always carry a spare set of keys. That is so necessary if you lock your keys in your car at a store. I have seen to many people pay a lock smith over $100.00 to open the car. No brainer saving time and money. Also no brainer saving your life with a second knife. When I go out in a possible dangerous area I will carry a rifle and a pistol. To much? I don’t think so where it comes to protecting your family or yourself. And if it comes down to it to protect someone being attacked by a A** being a bully.

  12. I carry 3 knives 2 in my pockets & one in my boot and 2 on my belt Rt & left side each. When I’m at home I sleep with 1 under my pillow & mattress & 1 behind my head board & 1 in my boot & 1 on my belt and 2 in my pants pockets hanging on the bed post of my bed. Now the Fang knife goes everywhere with me and in my truck I have a Special Forces survival knife a leather man knife and filet knife-2 gaming knives on 1 sheath in pocket behnd the drivers seat & 2 more hidden in secret places in my truck & SUV. Am I paranoid … no just planning for the worst & hoping for the best every day. Many other different weapons I chose not to mention I would rather have more then I need… then to need the right weapon & not have it.
Your not crazy. Just knife smart. Be safe.

  13. Well, I usually always carry at least three and sometimes four knives on me. You just never know what you may need.

  14. No you’re not crazy. I love that Fang. I’ll be ordering 1 or 2 more, depending on budget, when I get my next SS benefit.

  15. Hahaha under the pillow do you, well I keep a machete under my bed. Hahaha I love you already.

  16. It all depends on where I’m going but I usually have 2. Plus I have them in all my vehicles and several places in the house.

  17. Hmm. I see the sense. While I have several knives, I only carry one, usually. I carry back-ups for about every thing. I carry a spare key in my wallet. It won’t start my truck, but it will open the door. I know in the situation, God forbid, I have to use my gun, I will have to surrender it to LE. Time to get a good concealable sheath knife.

  18. I always have one in my pocket, one in my boot, two in my truck ,and always carry a .45auto or my 9 mm!
    Your not crazy!

  19. I carry two and sometime three a knife that goes in my front pocket a full Tang knife on my belt and some times I have on my neck knife

  20. I AM A KNIFE NUT AS YOU MIGHT BE..
( But I’m single and can fill up any room I want. )
I’m currently browsing fo hatchet’s cleavers, Machetes and anything meaty to clear foliage for campsites. A proper “wire / chain” saw that actually works.
A sturdy camp “shovel / pick” for my pack,as when shtf. I intend be on the move.
The Appalachians are all ROCK AND CLAY
Also hunting gear would be extremely urgent !!
My campsites would be temporary and always expendable.

  21. I also have more than one blade. Sometimes 2 and sometimes 3 on my person. As a over the road long distance truck driver I too need various tools for work and protection. Kudos to you my good friend. Let’s hope you never have to use them.

  22. I don’t think you’re crazy. I carry 2 on me but have one backup and a long gun for if l need it or think l need it. I carry 2 pistols and would probably carry 2 or 3 claymores if l could, you never know. My friends give me a hard time but l always have what l need. Can’t be to careful can you. Even retired snipers have to be ready for a gun fight now and then. I also carry a pair of hand cuffs and a couple of extra long zip ties just in case. Can’t be to careful right. Almost forgot, my cane has a sword inside it. Can’t be to careful right.

  23. I carry 1 small knife then1midsize in my pocket,then1knife in a sheath in my backpack.I just got a set of 3 throwing knifes,my wife things I’m crazy, but you always have to be prepared.Thxs

  24. I carry two knives and multi-tool ,it helped a couple on a thirty year old Honda get to the car and motorcycle show fathers day weekend. We took a safety pin into a fuseable link that had worn down and couldn’t make contact

  25. I have 8 knives and a 9 mm on me at all times. I have a knife clipped to both front pockets ,one clipped to back left pocket, one in the small of my back ,one in front right pocket and a sheath of 3 throwing knives on my right side belt right behind the 9 mm in my holster.

  26. Definitely not crazy to my thinking. Your comments are all sane and justified. Hopefully never needed but I always tell people its always better to have and not need something then need something and not have it. Cheers.

  27. I would like to indicate carrying several blades at a time can be cleaver, aside from defensive, first I have two in my wallet this protect my cards always. Then in my pocket is a small Swiss, complete with toothpick, scissor and tweezers, on my is the TRS 5N1, next to my multi tool. only leaving general community do I carry a fixed blade or two one often just a filet knive the second is on choice. I would not judge other for what they have until they need one of mine.

  28. Situation dependent I carry 2 to 3 knives. A good sharp folder for cutting, a tough tanto folding knife for digging prying scrapping, and a good strait blade hunting knife with a built in fire starter any time I’m off the beaten path. Also all my bug out and hunting bags have a Gerber tool and a back up folding knife& at least 1throwing blade.

  29. Knives are different for a deferent for uses, for a tool, for self defense choose a knife that is the best for defense or work !!.

  30. I have carried at least 2 knives when I am at work or just around the house. If I am going camping or hiking I always add a hunting knive, just in case. Better to have too many than not enough.

  31. I have also carried two knives for over thirty years. One on my belt and one in my boot. I even carry one of the so called “credit card” knives in the inside pocket of my suit jacket.

  32. It makes perfect sense to me to carry two knives. I quite often carry 3 or more, especially if I’m going to the woods.

  33. Ok So I just read this and let me tell you I could not agree more! It’s always sensible to carry at least 2! I carry 3 one of them being a Swiss Army knife just because the tool aspect of it. The other two are a larger folding buck knife for general purpose and a larger fixed blade. The buck knife is just a nitty gritty ready to use tool and has held up to everything I’ve put it through. Mind you I bought the USA made instead of the Chinese just because I prefer the quality. The larger is one I actually ordered from a forge in Wisconsin and by larger I mean it’s about 10″ overal give or take. Which I use for self defense which in my case is usually animals, seeing as I often work in the middle of nowhere. Always feral hogs and such running around but I would feel confident in using it in a SHTF scenario if I was in town somewhere and someone decided they would try to rob me etc. So all that being said I feel that you are absolutely right in this subject!

  34. I’m a 45 yr old woman and I have over 50 knives. I look like a girly girl but I am a true tomboy. Yes everyone thinks I’m crazy. I also carry 2 knives all the time and there is one under my pillow. I’ve never had to use one on anyone but not afraid to.

  35. No. Not crazy at all; unless we’re both CRAZY lol! I carry a small but effective one in my car. It’s used mainly for gutting fish and it’s sharpened at all times. I am a woman and I wish there were small accessible holsters that we can clip on our bar’s. I like light but effective knives. I don’t wear boots. I wear wedges!

  36. Morning, as a matter of fact my bride thinks the same. I have approx. 50 blades all sorts, sizes and uses. Always carry two sometimes three. One must be prepared right. Thanks, mike

  37. Consider yourself lucky

Here in the United Kingdom just the act of carrying a knife max blade 3″” puts you into the territory of arrest+ it’s now a 5 year minimum term for carrying. But the criminal/terrorist couldn’t give a damm what the penalty is if it is not enforced.

You have to justify it and if by any chance you use it for defence God help you!

Carrying a knife is usually seen as offensive weapon, in the minds of the Police and Politicians.

Even carrying pepper spray is illegal, so to defend yourself you have to break the law.

I carry a credit card knife, and I will carry a small tanto knife when I can find a decent rig for it The same goes for a boot knife. I do carry a emergency rescue knife , in my first aid kit I always carry just in case!

The strange part is I used to be a firearms owner, I really agreives me that we all lost our full bore rifles and pistols . This due to the acts of two mentally ill men who should have never been issued with a Firearms Certificate in the first place .
The second the owner was given back his certificate despite the warnings he was unsafe.

What makes it worse on the day our possession of fire arms were made illegal the British Government issued 2500 Ex British Military Rifles to Serria Leone . These were just handed out like sweets the irony was this was to make this country safer!

So as you can see over here we are stuck between the rock and the hard place.

But what really worries me is I’m unable to protect myself and others.

But on the bright side I do have quite a knife collection as long as I don’t go outside!

So keep on carrying remember it’s up to you to protect your life . No matter how good your police force is if it’s 10 minutes away it might as well be on the moon .

  38. Two knives – great idea.
But I am extremly hampered…I am recovering from a serious injury to my dominant (left) shoulder – a break and bad rotator cuff injury…I am a small 69 yo woman and the healing is going to take many more months…I do feel qute vulnerable :>(

  39. The only time to carry two knives is when it’s inconvenient/impossible to carry three.

  40. I carry two always, and a mak-9.18 or cz82, ,At home my wife has a can of wasp spray handy to deter a attacker,it sprays a long way
A shot of this will stop most home attacks .in the night..
But I like your ideas they will work quite well You must be always be on your toes of your surroundings day or night!!
