My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I think you have the right way to go. You have me thinking, I do carry a knife for general purposes, now l will carry for defense, I have a carry permit so I should be legal to carry. If you have any information about knife carrying please send me a line. Thanks

  2. your not crazy, here in australia we are not alowed to carry a knife or even have one in the glovebox of the car. !!!!!!

  3. I carry three. I keep all of them sharp enough to handle anything I need them for. One that fits in the front pocket comfortably and takes on the majority of jobs that you carry a pocket knife for. I have one clipped in each back pocket as well. One for the heavier jobs that occur frequently, and one for those times you need a VERY sharp tool.

  4. I carry a bowie knife and and a regular pocket knife for everyday use I have cut the bottom out of the right pocket of all the jeans I own that way the sheath can go all the way down in that pocket so I can carry a 12inch bowie and the only part showing is the handle

  5. NO. I carry two of the TRS 325S Tactical survival knives, A Hoffman-Richter fixed blade, two credit card type survival knives, a small version of the swiss army, and a key knife along with the SPIKE. And I think that I am perfectly sane.

  6. I carry two knives all the time. one on my belt and one in my pocket. plus two more in my truck. the one in my pocket is a trs 5n1 edc just incase.

  7. Here in Canada, you’ll face a fine for carrying a knife on you unless your in the woods,,,and the balisong shown in your pic is totally forbidden

  8. I collect automatics. But the one’s that I have some of them have A hidden button. As far as the other regular pocket knives I have A few of those also.
I’ve only seen one of these, the blade actually shoots out the front from A spring. In other words the blade
Shoots out of the knife. The spring is so strong that it takes quite a bit of force to get the blade back in.
I have only seen one in my life.I doubt that they can be found.Having A blade that actually shoots out of
The blade I imagine it makes them highly illegal.

  9. I must be insane then, I keep a tactical knife in left pocket (being left handed ), sharper one in right pocket for everyday use. But the concealed one in the belt buckle gives me that advantage I like.

  10. I am 71, female and live alone. I am the mother of 2 sons and 2 daughter, grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 16. I carry a knife in my purse, in my car, in my ” to go bag” and have two in my apartment. When I find one that might fit somewhere in my life I buy it. I live alone and think this is smart on my part. Tell your wife to learn to use a knife.

  11. I don’t think you’re crazy at all! But then again, I carry an average of 4 to 5 knives on different parts of my body every time I leave the house. I only carry two when at home.

  12. If you are crazy then so am I. I carry more than 2 though. Better prepared than not prepared.

  13. I carry a good size pocket knife since I was 12 I am 60 now and I have been in a few of the situations you mentioned
That’s why I ordered one of you tactical knifes and what you say makes sense
    All the best from ireland

  14. I am a disabled Viet Nam Vet and I carry 4 knives everywhere except to the VA Hospital. I have 2 I got from yu which are great! Due to currant medical problems I have a hard time carrying my legal pistol so the knives come in handy and are easy to carry.

  15. I totally agree with you. I have been carrying 2 knives (One on each side of my body) for a couple of years. At first I did this in case I was trapped in my car in an accident. My wife thinks I am nuts also. I HATE having to leave my knives in my car when I go to a concert or a courthouse. I feel helpless without them, which I am. I also keep a Swiss army knife and a cheap multitool in my backpack. Thank you for sharing this article.

  16. I carry an everyday utility knife (for work), a wannabe Leatherman (which replaced my Swiss Army Knife, I find myself needing the pliers and larger screwdrivers more often than the toothpick or tweezers) and a belt knife (for self defense).
    Thanks for asking,
Tango Dryvmore (delivery driver in a bad neighborhood).

  17. Well I guess I’m crazy to then because I carry 2 knives also, & 2 sets of keys, ones a Smith & Wesson automatic & the other is a new StaGear developed by a first responder,&I probably have 75 knives. You can stick a good tanto blade through the hood of a car if you have to! I get your POINT, wholeheartedly & I’m right there with you.
    Sharply yours,
    Walking Protected

  18. Thanks for the article, and yes, you got a point. I usually carry a pocket-knife wherever I go. On the farm a carry a belt-knife. Your idea to carry two knives all the time makes sense, I will do so in the future.

    Best regards , Hans

  19. I carry several knives both folders and fixed bladeson both sides of my chair so They are easily accesable

  20. When i worked security i made it a point to have a self defense blade fixed blade on me and also a beater flipper on me, now that i changed jobs i make sure i have a self defense fixed blade and just my multi tool as my beater blade i agree with the 2 blade rule

  21. I always carry two knives on my person even if I’m packing my pistol. One is a clip on in my right side front pocket. It’s my tool for everyday usage. The other is my Winchester Bowie knife I keep on my left side just shoved through my belt. I can use either hand to draw from.of course I usually have a jacket or shirt covering it in a grocery store along with my pistol. I spent 20 years in the Army so I just have the cautious attitude anyway. It’s about confidence not fear that I do this. Thanks for what you are doing to help those who don’t have the confidence. A well armed society is a polite society.

  22. As I sit here and count I have four knives on me, but that is one more than usual. I do carry three good assorted ones all the time. My wife also thinks I am sort of nuts. Also I have three k-bars a couple of MARINE rifle bayonets several daggers and four swords. I,digress. There a couple of us out there even if my wife said. If I,bought another she would get one of my guns and shoot me. She should at least use the pistol I bought her. God bless. By the way, your collection is almost as big as mine. I had a great start with my Dad’s (a seabe) my Mom past on to me. The greatest guy and sort of nuts also.

  23. I CARRY A QUICK DRAW BUCK FOLDING KNIFE .
MADE THE QUICK DRAW HOLSTER MY SELF .I HAVE DRAWN IT FASTER AND DEFENDED MY SELF FROM A MANIACK WITH A GUN

  24. Well, I guess I am definitely a Knife Nut! It started when I picked up a WWII Japanese sword for $35.00. Yes, $35.00! Since then I have acquired numerous Mauser bayonets, K-Bars, Bowie, folding knives, Necklace knives that are worn around the neck, US WWII Machetes (one is so long I cannot find a sheath for it), and Cold Steel spear/survival blades that I have modified to hunt wild bore with a removable “T” to prevent the animal from charging all the way up the shaft. Still selecting the best wood for the shaft. I am leaning towards English Oak from Europe or Live oak from Georgia.
I estimate the total at 75+
I keep several in the house and all cars/bug out bags.
Lets face it, at some point It will hit the fan and firearms munitions will be hard if not impossible to find,
I am nearly 62 with a bad back and I know that I will not survive to bad times. But I have family that is younger and share my interest in defending family and country. I buy these for them, My family.
At any moment in time, whether in my car, truck, cabin/bunker or home I am NEVER without one knife in arms reach and more within 10 feet. My UNCLE taught me some of the skills and life experience in the tropics, mountains, artic and desert areas forced me to learn how to use these skills to survive as well as preserve the tools at hand to be the most effective.
FYI.. My wife is my #1 student! Born in China and highly skilled in Martial Arts thanks , She kicks my butt on a regular basis thanks to some never discussed “programs” implemented by the Chinese leaders
Liu Shaoqi and Li Xiannian! Yet was never taught the bade skills that my Uncle taught me.

  25. No I carry one in every pocket whichever hand I can get to that pocket first is the one I use. You can never have too many

  26. Hello! I just would like to give an enormous thumbs up for the good info you have here on this post. I will likely be coming back to your blog for additional soon.

  27. I think, for some women have an obsession with shoes as a fashion . Unless she is an Imelda Marcos type it is perfectly fine if she has a closet full. For some men it is somewhat the same knives can be a fashion statement as well. I feel we as such should have so many we have trouble shutting the closet door! As for women, any that collect knives would be just fine having my back if necessary!

  28. I have carried two + for many years, (I am 68), one is a 3.5 ” Benchmade with axis lock, the second is a HAVALON, with replaceable scalpel blade…I use both on a daily basis.
My third or, (+), knife is a BOKER+, with a 1.75″ blade that I use as a money clip. This knife has a very deep, 1.25″, blade that has some serious strength behind it.

The Boker is rarely used as a knife…bit it is ALWAYS there..

  29. You are right on the money as I see it. Being prepared requires deep thinking and preparedness of these essential tools for survival. As your families protector, when something happens and you are unable to carry on because you follow her desire instead of your instinct…another one bites the dust. That should never happen if we follow what we know is right.

  30. Hey I’m with you, I carry more than one and there are times I take a gun to a knife fight.lol I can relate with Daniel because I read on a knife blog some time ago that a real knife guy carried at least three knives at all times but people think I’m a little weird because I carry two knives. But as I was taught in the Scouts, Always be prepared and in the Army, always adapt.

  31. Back in the day, 75-79, in the Army. I carried three, 1. AF survival knife, 2. Folder, taped to my web gear, 3. Demo knife, in a .45 mag pouch, with container of wind proof matches.

  32. I carry a tactical knife clipped to each front pocket right and left side, I have a folding razor knife on my left rear pocket ,a 4 inch boot knife in the center of my back and a set of 3 throwing knives on my belt right side as well as a 9mm on my belt right side and a tactical pen in my shirt pocket. I am very situationally aware of my surroundings at all times and very good at self defense. I can also shoot very well.Anyone that makes the bad decision to try and harmony wife and I are going to have a very very bad day ! If they survive to tell about it.

  33. I love the picture of all your knifes. If you have an extra one, then please send it to me. I am in a power chair and I feel like i am a possible target to any and all the criminals out there. I am on social security and I can not afford to buy a pistol. I would love to have a 357 revolver and a Glock 40 cal. model 22, but like I said, no money. I do have my CCW permit here in Missouri, but nothing to go with it. If anyone out there that can help me, that would be a great blessing for both of us. Take care and may God bless you and your family. Thanks

  34. With a job like mine where a stealth kill is paramount to carry 3 to 7 blades plus a good set of throwing knives is life or death. I would advise you are that you are versed in proper usage of how to use your blades.

  35. I carried a Scottish pig sticker in my shock plate as a last line of defense in a hand to hand when I was LEO. Razor sharp and would do the job. Always carry!

  36. Bob, you are right, my wife thinks I’m nuts too. I carry three knives all the time! I am about to order another one! The Fang! Send me the order page. Thanks, Ron Ray.

  37. Tell your wife your not crazy, this guy is crazy. I carry 4 folders in different areas, boot knife #5, and belt blade when feasable#6. Semper Fi. I also have a spike located somewhere…

  38. I usually carry at least two and up to 4 or 5 depending on what Im doing but always my TRS 325s and my Case pocket knife. Love the pic thanks for sharing.

  39. I am a 2 knife type also. Plus one in each Vehicle, and one in almost all my tool boxes also. It is in the back of my mind for self-defense purposes but it is for having the “Right Tool” for the job. 😉

  40. Absolutely one knife on each side plus one in the boot! No you’re not crazy! In the deep, dark part of the big inner city, the children are going to Christian schools with knives in their pockets.
