My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

How To Pick Locks. (Who Needs Keys?)

You may find this shocking, but picking open a standard "tumbler" lock, (like the one on your front door), is pretty damn easy when you know how it's done.

And in a "meltdown" survival situation, (once the smash-n-grab crowd has stolen everything not tied-down), the food and water and secure shelter will all be behind locked doors, (which explains why Special Forces are often trained in lock picking... and why they carry a set of lock pics with them).

It's a lot of fun learning this skill, (it doesn't take long)... and kinda nice to help out that buddy locked out of his house after the wife discovered what really happened on that "no money down" real estate seminar in Vegas.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. If you are nuts, then so am I. I usually carry 3, but even if I’m in a hurry to get on the road and don’t have the time to strap on an ankle blade I still have 2.
One at my right side and one under my left armpit. You know, just in case.
I’ve never had to stab or cut anyone, but I have backed an aggressor off by simply pulling out the Widow Maker and doing a bit of “brandishing “. I will not go anywhere unless I’m properly strapped.

  2. Hi Bob, you know what?
I think you are crazy !
    “Like a fox”
I believe that the world is full of beautiful things BUT I also believe that there are threats that come to us and force distasteful responses. Give what is being given.
If it is good, return good.
If it is evil, return that .
Evil triumphs when good people fail to do what HAS to be done.
You are crazy and I will stand shoulder to shoulder with you.

  3. No you’re not, as a matter of fact I have 5 knives on me right now. I’m a die hard knife nut. I’ve been collecting since I was 14 years old. I’ll be 58 in two months so I have a lot of knives.

  4. My father has always gave me a knife every Birthday and quality steel is always tops, carrying 3 is a daily thing.1Pocket,1 belt ,1 boot.

  5. no I usually have two knives handy as you never know. sure one is for multi-task purposes but I always have that spare as like you said you never know.

  6. Yes I’m a knife nut too LOL, like You ! I enjoy your blog good info.. thanks you need to add a Australian commando knife to your collection to,

  7. Yeah I’ve got several hundred knives myself. Of course I bought a lot of them in dealers bulk quantities thinking that my dad and I would go in on them together and try to sell them on the side because we were both disabled, but he passed away before we could get it up and running. I probably have over 600 knives; then I have my own personal collection with at least a 100 knives in it alone. So yeah; I guess you could say I’m kind of a knife nut.

  8. Knives are a great idea. You have great fight instructions for people of all skill levels. My ex boyfriend of 17 yrs. Is 3rd degree black belt shaolin kung fu. I learn much from him and books my brothers had etc. Peace out and walk softly but carry a big stick. Veronica

  9. I love knives guys.allways have.but funny as it is I’ve never carried more than one at a time!Very sound advice.I don’t know about u guys but I’ve found that there is a lot more violence out there lately.(and I live in canada)!im not sure what it is,Mabey the culture?excuse me for sounding old or bigoted but maybe the hip/hop?definatly not all or even most of it but u gotta admit all that anger directed at the system gets absorbed by people that don’t even listen to the lyrics!they only here anger.anyways I think ill get the knife throwing kit.chow

  10. I’m a little goofy too. I carry two pocket knives. One for work the other for jerky and other foods. A fixed blade on my belt and one in my boot. I’m an over achiever. I just like knives and guns!

  11. When I was working in the carnival anytime somebody needed a blade they would come hit me up. My friends counted up all the blades I was carrying one day I had a total of 14 knives on me of one kind or another. So no I would say you’re not crazy.

  12. Never carried a knife until moving to Florida and hearing on the news everyday about the exploding Python population.
I enjoy hiking in The Preserves here and got to thinking what the Hell would I do if one of these snakes wrapped itself around me. I would have no way of stopping it……so I now carry at least one knife on me at all times but after reading this article I think I will start carrying two just in case.

  13. Usually at least five cutting instruments.
    Mini Swiss on key chain.
Cold Steel 6″ tanto boot knife.
CRKT clip knife in dominant front pocket.
Gator belt knife on opposite hip.
    Rabbit ear in coin purse.
Sometimes a Gambler in cargo pocket.
“Your not paranoid if they’re really after you.”

  14. Being a meat utter I use several knives daily at work ,but I never leave the house without a minimum of three blades on me at all times. When I have time I also make my own blades. So I am never out of reach of a blade when the need arises.

  15. I have a credit card knife in my wallet an etc on my side and usually a knack knife.I sleep with knives on my night stand, under my pillows and machete or 2 with other blades hidden around here and there.in case I’m caught out of my room without a weapon I have one close by almost anywhere in the house

  16. Knives are an ancient tool and i believe that in close quartet combat such as self defense situations with muggers carrying small pocket pistols.Pepper spray in left hand and small folding knife in right hand give you the ability to survive such a deadly encounter in places where an assailant is carrying a pistol illegally (gun free zones)such as post offices or work places or banks can give you the critical seconds to stop a lethal threat and survive.Because if you deprive a killer of sight
It shifts the balance of the encounter to your favor.

  17. Being raised in the South, it was and is that most men,(Gentlemen),usually carried two knives. One pocket knife plus a folding knife,(Case for example). Now, that has changed. I still carry two. A good quality folding knife and a concealed fixed blade.

  18. Excellent rational for multiples. I too want 3 defense weapons when I’m out and about. Both in solitary times and when in large groups or crowds, Multiples makes sense to me. And knives feel good, are small, inconspicuous, and so handy. And just as a little asside: I’m a liberal.. conservatives and liberals CAN agree on these things.

  19. Your knifes and deals are the best. I’m a knife nut because I own enough of your knifes I have them in my pocket within arms length in any room in my house, car, yard at work and play. The striker is my latest.

  20. No, you’re not nuts. I always have at least two on me, and usually three. One gentleman’s knife in my right front pocket for any of the many tasks that a small gentleman’s type folding knife excels at. This knife is the one I pull out at the office and don’t worry about scaring anyone. My second is a larger folder carried in my front left pocket. It’s either an assisted opening blade, or a flipper that I’ve practiced with, oiled etc. and will open faster than a switchblade should it be necessary. That one comes out only for big tasks that would destroy the gentleman’s blade, or when I’m not around folks who might be surprised or afraid of a big bad folder. Finally, if I have my shit-kicker boots on (nearly everyday at work), I have a good sized flipper inside the boot’s upper. No boots, and I’ll strap a small fixed blade to my ankle instead, if I have time, and am going anywhere beyond my front yard. My wife thinks I too am nuts, but I’d rather be crazy than caught unprepared.

  21. Great article! I keep a small fixed blade on my left side on my belt so as not to be in the way of my pistol on my dominant side. A folding knife clipped in my right front pocket and a boot knife in my left boot. The only thing I’d add is the knife you use the most shouldn’t be one you’d hate to lose. My right hand folder is a Kershaw ($40 range) and if I need to use it, in an emergency, or if I lost it in a mudhole it wouldn’t crush me. That’s my utility blade. My belt knife I can use in defense along with my pistol and my boot knife if on the ground. Find an inexpensive utility knife for everyday use.

I’m enjoying all of your instructional videos and articles. Thanks!

  22. I think a couple knives are good, carrying 3 today and 4 yesterday. I don’t always carry but my brother and my girlfriend do.

PS. maybe we should be able to comment on other people’s comments, it would be great for prepper networking, hope you consider this Idea, thanks so much

  23. Oh yea Bob,
NEVER bring a knife to a gun fight ..but.. you BETTER have AT LEAST a sharp Knife. I have no hesitation saying secondary to good tactical movement (eyes, arms, e t c.) the quality of the steel is a no Brainer ! Some of the average SS is good paper cutting Quality,……..but the Great Steels are ……paid for. My CCW is the Main Event ,my blade is its Insurance Policy .

  24. Actually I carry 4 now that I purchased my newest addition. One is a “throw away”. Will get the job done but is inexpensive to replace.

  25. I carry a 4 inch push dagger on my non dominant side and my 9mm on my dominant side. It’s one wicked blade.

  26. I keep a 1.5″ clipped on my right pocket as a “beater”for work. I typically wear sneakers so my boot knife isn’t practical as an EDC, so I keep an extremely sharp 3” blade on my left pocket for self defense. My wife, too, thinks i’m crazy for frequently coming home with a new knife, but like I tell her, you can’t have too many knives. I’m a sucker for a good knife, and if it’s not sharp, it’s not a knife.

  27. Just recently received my TRS325 and am using it for every day carry in my dominant side front pocket as well as the small Kershaw that is my go to for dirty situations.
I also carry a 5N1EDC in my backpack for a fire starter if needed. I really like the quality of the TRS knives and the videos are helpful.

  28. I carry a minimum of Three on my person and at least two fire sources. I also carry two flashlights which is very small but bright. This is something I learned from Marine Corps and my Law Enforcement days. It not paranoid but Prepared! Always remember to tether your gear too……
Semper Fi, Can Do and 1*SRT

  29. You are not the only person to carry two knives…I always have multiple! It is only smart, as you said. Blood also tends to males a knife slick as oil…you grip will be lost, especially once imbedded into muscle or bone!
Beautiful layout of utility and defensive knives you have!!!

  30. You are not the only person to carry two knives…I always have multiple! It is only smart, always carry two if everything! Blood also tends to make a knife slick as oil…your grip will be lost, especially once imbedded into muscle or bone!
Beautiful layout of utility and defensive knives you have!!!

  31. Good article. Nice Collection, but since I have over 800, I have thay many on my nightstand. I generally carry four, at all times. One beater, one quick open, and generally two vintage. I rotate my carry knives all the tide, sometimes daily. Guess I’m a knife Nut Too !!!

  32. Yes I very much agree . actually. Carry 3 to 4 . my self usealy two pocket knifed and a multi tool which has a blade in it as well. But the knife is the most versitol. Tool you can have I do believe

  33. Nope I care at least 3 knives maybe more If I have a jacket on I agree but the best point is one knife to protect yourself and one to set by the body to protect yourself lol

  34. Nope, I sometimes carry 3. I don’t have a boot knife, so I usually have 1 in each pocket. Sometimes a third or 4th one if wearing a heavy jacket. Also, may have another 1 or 2 when camping.

  35. i have a similar collection except i have a couple sheaf knives a 14 inch Bowie for instance and a sheaf of throwing knives that has 4 in the sheaf i also have a sheaf with 3 knives with paracord as the handle wraps and i also have a couple with flash lights built onto the handle and one with a fire starter flint and steel.

  36. My father bought me a knife when I was six years old and have always had one,now I am seventy six and still carry one. I have used them for work and selfdefense, knives have saved me a couple of times. I just don’t feel right without one. I carry one most of the time maybe I will start carrying two.
