How Realistic is Your Training?

How Far Would You Go?

We all know that realistic training is one of the keys to preparing for a life or death self-defense situation. Adding elements of distraction, discomfort, unpredictability, and adrenaline are all good, but how far should you go?

Talk About Intense…

As you just saw, this video shows an extreme example of “stress” training. I agree with the host that this is taking it a bit too far (maybe they’ve never heard of simunition).

While it’s a good counterbalance to a lot of training which is way too tame, there are safe ways to “amp up” your training and there are unsafe ways.

Safety First

Always keep safety at the top of your mind when training for self-defense. The goal, after all, is to survive a violent encounter. There’s no need to get seriously injured while training to prevent a serious injury…

All that being said, it’s a pretty intense and entertaining video to watch. For all we know those crazy Russians could simply be “putting us on” and chuckling afterward thinking that we bought into a very elaborate practical joke. What do you think?

  1. I can see this a real confidence booster but only for the extreme experienced. It would be a great help at a keeping innocent people from getting hurt or killed.

  2. That was totally crazy. I need more training because I wouldn’t let my friends stand down range with my live rounds zipping past their heads. Most def. Russia only drill. Good video though. Way to go fight fast.

  3. I’ve seen this video a few times. One thing is certain: Russians don’t mess around. That is actually why they achieved much much more against ISIS in Syria than the loud-mouthed Macdonald’s boys.

  4. Ah those crazy Russians lol. Excellent training theory and practice though. Don’t f**k with the FSB. Cheers Bob, a pleasure as always.

  5. That is some crazy stuff. It does bring to point one very important issue– training without that, leaves the possibility in the back of the mind that the training is safe and you can’t really get killed doing it– but THEIR way– it’s the REAL thing- more effective. It would take a LOT of nerve to do that. I went through bodyguard school that was similar- but that “death” possibility had been neutralized by using paint balls, and lazer tag type weapons, which gives you the tactical training part, but you still in the back of your mind know you’re NOT going to get killed- so not as effective. Good stuff there IF you live through it!! 🙂

  6. I seriously don’t think that was a joke, just extreme training. But, i agree with the American. The cardboard silhouettes are best to fine tune with. Friendly fire does exist while accidents could occur for unexplaned reasons.

  7. This training is way over the top! If your not stressed at the start, you will be at the end of the session.

  8. I think our police departments need to have this type of training as well as us well intended USCCA members.

  9. I have not worked with or around Russain troops in over 30 years. Dealing with them durning the cold war commanders were to expect a high number of causlalates on any tranning misson.
When the caslalates were to low commander were not pushing them hard enought. When the toal was to high they placed themselfs on a list to be invested.

Heads I win teals you lose posation.

Training is real crazy but real.

  10. That was awesome my son and I drill with airsoft weapons much in the same way. I don’t think live fire with real weapons is a good idea .

  11. Gentlemen, I like the drills for the training they provide, not for the average guy from the street. These guys don’t “put on” for much of anything, Russians do NOT have a sense of humor that you would relate to easily. As far as using live rounds, I had an instructor that had NO hesitation in shooting you in the vest. Ask Rick, if he’s around’ I’m sure he remembers “occasions” at the farm. This type of training you’d only do with your “partner”, that when you’d get an itch, he’d scratch himself in the same place. That’s how our squad was in ‘Nam, we pretty much knew what each would do, even out of a sound sleep. Otherwise, somebody going to need a lot of band-aids and a priest ! “JB”

  12. This would be a place a lot of guys would like to take Thier Mothers In Law for “training”

  13. Yes insane. Live ammo used on trainees? Idiot might be a better description. Didn’t need to watch past 1 min 30sec.

  14. I train hard but nothing like I just saw, my training is mostly on control and placement placement of round, I am ex Special Forces and I have run black ops in VietNum, sure could have used that kind of dtraining then

  15. That was intense, but can see where the training lacks. The guys he is shooting at are armed and shooting back..I would think. Chasing the detractors away is a hindrance…shoot them in the legs.

  16. Most realistic training I have ever seen. Do not see it happening in the states due to safety concerns.

  17. Awesome drills. I could see some potential in variation of these to be used to give you the full effect of a real life situation . But vary advanced. Thanks for sharing

  18. Lol! Kinda reminds me of playing tackle football and fighting ( we considered it sparring ) without any protective gear when we were kids. Not sure I would want to do this though.

  19. Need to allow training like this here in the states many people think that being shot at is like the television shows people that have been shot at or shot really learn to respect what firearms do

  20. I’d be happy to hire a Russian who has been trained like this as a bodyguard. But I’ll hide behind him when trouble starts.

  21. Spetznatz is no Joke. underestimate your enemies and your behind before you meet. I respect and fear these excellent warriors and realize they are doing security worldwide as soldiers of fortune.

  22. It does appear to be advanced training 4 spec ops personnel, but i also see that part of it is truly far fetched.

  23. The Russians have always trained with live ammo. Even in tanks and artillery. If a artillery rounds hits a tank during an exercise it is so what. They expect 10 to 40 per cent casualties in every exercise and training. There is not a blank round in their munitions inventory.

  24. Definitely shooting drills not for one who is hesitant… Every shot must be precise rolling with fluidity into next one… My hats off to anyone who successfully exhibits both confidence and ability so perfectly. No room for error in this dance.
