Bad News: Most Criminals Get Away With It

Does Crime Pay?

Polite society likes to ignore some simple facts associated with crime. Take this one for example; We are raised hearing the mantra that “crime doesn’t pay.” Wrong. Crime does pay. It pays pretty well too.

Some might say it’s one of the best-kept secrets in personal finance, except it’s not a secret. It’s just a fact that makes a lot of folks uncomfortable, so they pretend it’s not true. So what’s my point? Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting you quit your day job and go knock off a liquor store.

Here’s The Real Lesson

If every criminal got caught the first or even second time they committed a crime, we would very quickly have them all locked up! The reality is that only the bad or unlucky criminals get caught and locked up, and many of those that do get locked up use prison as a place to hone their skills.

Once they’re back on the street, they are even more skilled. That means that if you are targeted by a criminal you must assume you’re going up against a pro. You are more than likely NOT their first victim. They have a plan, they know how to get what they want, and they even know how to get away with it.

They Feed On Our Fear

Frankly, they’re used to winning. Most people shrink when faced with a hardened criminal (or any criminal for that matter). Fearing for their safety, they nervously give the criminal what they want. Criminals thrive off the fear of violence. Violence is their business and they know it pretty well.

If you are reading this then this probably isn’t new information, but it’s easy (even for those of us who aren’t naïve about crime) to get lulled into a false sense of security. The completely naïve think that they are pretty much safe all the time.

How To Pick Locks. (Who Needs Keys?)

You may find this shocking, but picking open a standard "tumbler" lock, (like the one on your front door), is pretty damn easy when you know how it's done.

And in a "meltdown" survival situation, (once the smash-n-grab crowd has stolen everything not tied-down), the food and water and secure shelter will all be behind locked doors, (which explains why Special Forces are often trained in lock picking... and why they carry a set of lock pics with them).

It's a lot of fun learning this skill, (it doesn't take long)... and kinda nice to help out that buddy locked out of his house after the wife discovered what really happened on that "no money down" real estate seminar in Vegas.

Overconfidence Can Work Against You

Others think that because they are aware of crime and have thought about what they would do (maybe they even carry a self-defense weapon) that they are prepared. I’m not here to pass judgment on anyone, but there is a fine line between confidence and a dangerous level of over-confidence.

Remember, many criminals are very good at what they do. You need to train to survive a confrontation with a pro, not a beginner. You have to train to beat the best, so take your defensive training seriously.

Ask Yourself This

If you carry a weapon, when was the last time you trained in drawing and deploying it? Weapon or not, when was the last time you threw a few punches? Do you know how to transition from a weapon to bare hands in case of a malfunction (for firearms) or loss of control of an edged or blunt-force weapon?

Even masters have to go through the motions to keep their skills sharp, so set aside some time each week to practice. Keep your skills sharp, because when it hits the fan you never really know what you’re going up against. You could be facing anything from a rookie who’s all talk or a seasoned pro, and you definitely do NOT want to find out which you are facing the hard way.

  1. I’m 72 and too old and fat to get into a fight with a strong criminal so I carry a sharp knife and know eneough anatomy to cut in the body to at least get away.

  2. I have to walk with a cane since February, 2016. Thank God I have some skills in cane fighting and rendering an attacker;Hmm, surprised. I am not totally disabled, but I AM totally aware. Even before my disability; I never lost a fight I could get away from.

  3. I don’t disagree with anything that you have said. However I am going to be 74 in March and am a 5ft 3 in female, who suffers from constant stiffness and pain from a leg injury, complicated by Fibromeralgia. I learned almost 40 yrs. ago when I tried to take a self defense course, that my body couldn’t handle the practice involved in the training, as I still had to function as a wife and mother of Three boys.
I am licensed for concealed cary and am NRA TRAINED- never leave the house without my Glock 19, conceal carried. I have a pistol holstered next to my knee in my car, another revolver holstered by my mattress, and my house has a multifaceted alarm system with back up system, my car also has a sophisticated alarm system, and locks me in as soon as I close the door. Am not fast enough or nimble enough to use a knife in an attack. Hopefully I’ll get them before they get me, as all of my guns have Lasers. And it turns out I’m a very good shot. Also have guns stationed throughout my house. Grew up shooting a 22 rifle- would feel no remorse killing an attacker.

  4. It is good to know there is info out there to help protect us ‘oldies, and it also makes us realise we still have to make an effort to keep fit because it ‘aint a friendly world we’ve manufactured.

  5. Bob, Thanks for the opportunity. I have already gotten this package before so I’ll pass on this. I really like this knife and hope I never have to use it against anyone. I view the “Fast Blade” dvd every so often. We have a group of men at church who provide security while we have services. I’m going to address them to get someone to train with , so I can join them.

  6. Iv’e been practicing the techniques from the products I’ve received and have referred friends to this site. I carry a gun always but I know I may not have time to draw it and if you try the other guy may take it away and use it on me. this country is turning bad because of Obama and Hillary and if the election is rigged and she wins.we’ll have a war on US grounds so learn all you can as fast as you can, not only about fighting but about survival like growing your own food even in the winter, have a place to go that’s safe like the backwoods or mountains I was raised in the backwoods so I know how to live there. People from the city need to know these things also and with the net there is a lot of information out there learn now the next weeks or months are not guaranteed. I welcome any tips I can get so feel free to offer advice I don’t know all there is and am working to learn more.

  7. Very good point! You gave me a very real issue to think about being a Concealed weapon carrier. I carry every day and I also do at least 15 mins. Of dry fire practice from the dry fire playing cards that I picked up a couple of years ago from your site for $7.00. Could’ve gotten them for free but they’re worth way more than that to me. I can only pray that IF I have to use force to protect myself or the ones I love, that I will do so without hesitation. They are the professionals… But I train to end their profession should they bring it to me!!! Thanks for giving us something to think about and train for.

  8. Lethal force with a firearm is a last resort. However, if you are going to do this, you MUST make the decision before you present the weapon. After presentation of the weapon is no time to be wasted in decision making. If you pull it, use it instantly.

Law enforcement officers are trained to hold a perpetrator at bay, and this delay is sometimes their undoing. The criminal has no such delay and will often attempt to defeat an armed opponent who is holding a weapon on him. What does he have to lose? If he is a three time loser he knows he faces serious jail time and he just might be quick enough to win the fight.

If he pulls a weapon on you, you are justified in killing him.

    Semper Fi!

  9. Great post and you’re spot on! I’ve been in many confrontations in my lifetime but I’ve always trained. Now that I’m a senior citizen I have to work on my skills at least twice a week, sometimes more, since I could be seen as an easier target because of my age. Your advise is an excellent reminder……keep up the good work!

  10. Yes, i agree with you. Also it is good be aware of your surroundings, not paranoid, or fearful, but aware. Then again, Taking selfies and poki man etc and thinking and acting as if no one besides my self exists, Gives the criminal an idea of who to mess with. I’ve seen the over confidence deal also and that can get you into some serious trouble. Do I want to walk arouND thinking there’s a criminal around every corner, no. Self confidence, staying in shape, and fast on your feet are good things to have anyway. Thanks.

  11. We need jails like they have in Turkey. I think it was the movie Midnight Express that gave some idea of the way the Turks handle criminals.
A bit toned down from the real thing, but made Americans sit up and take notice. Much rougher than our prisons where they have access to the internet, libraries, weight rooms and drugs etc. The legal system in the US is upside down thanks to the liberal idiots.

  12. Hi Bob , I live in the UK and we are not allowed to carry any type of weapon that can harm others, .
So being a 5ft 4″ man in his 70s other than being quick on my toes I don’t see that there is very much that I can do about protecting my wife or my self. Bascially in England we are not allowed to defend oursellfs , crazy right, but that is the law. Best of luck to you our American friends. Ron K.

  13. Thank you for the wake-up call. The fact that we can be attacked by a PRO at violence is a sobering realization. I’m sharing this mindset info with everyone I can. Again, THANKS!

  14. Hey Bob,
Thanks for the information, that I already knew, about the dirt bags in my neighborhood. I’ll even place a bet, they are in many other people’s neighborhoods, as well. I am happy, as requested, to leave my feedback regarding your “Free Self-Defense Mini-Clinic”… As one of your hot list members, I will be taking advantage of this awesome and needed Self-Defense Mini-Clinic.
I am a 57 year young widow that over the past 18 months have lost 150+ lbs.. I have been getting healthy and fit along the way, also. I am also a survivalist and have been for years. I have planning and have an extensive supply of food/water/weapons (silent ones too)/one shot knock down ammo/medical supplies + trauma training/ etc etc…. I’ve been studying the diverse uses of herbs, both food and medicinal, for over 35 years. My 35 year old daughter also lives with me, and we have to be prepared to defend ourselves and our belongings from these dirt bag thugs, to survive en-route to our safe compound, where other survivalist / prepper’s will be.
I hope you enjoyed my feedback regarding, BE PREPARED WITH A “SELF-DEFENSE MINI-CLINIC”. Hey and if any of you have questions or just want to join the community. Head on over and chat with “FIGHT FAST” JIM WEST or get in the RED ZONE with DALE COMSTOCK. Also, for those who don’t know or haven’t in years, check out the FREE “SHOCKING QUICK-LEARN HAND GUN TRAINING”.
I would like to let you all know that BOB PIERCE of FIGHT FAST & FIGHT INSTRUCTION has quite an incredibly knowledgeable website here, along with some handy dandy, much needed and useful tools/weapons, too… Well, as one of Bob’s hot list members, they are my go to tools/weapons of choice, and I have all kinds of goodies I have been stashing and utilizing. What good is owning them, if you don’t use them to be sure they are going to operate the way you want them to, when you need them to? The same goes for Self-Defense and the use of a Weapon. BE PREPARED to use what you need, and be PREPARED NOW, NOT SOMEDAY… You won’t have the time to say “Hmmm, what should I do in this scenario?” If you know what to look for, and lucky, you will only have a tenth of a second to react FIRST & FAST!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE,, don’t be sittin’ on your hands when SHTF… All of us are in this together!! Either BE PREPARED, GET PREPARED OR BE PREPARED TO GO DOWN WITH THE SHIP… I’m just saying “there will be NO WHITE FLAG UPON MY DOOR”..
Until the next time, I have something to say,
Take Care, and Take Advantage of Bob’s great site here,

  15. I have believed for a long time that I am my first line of defense against criminals. I’m grateful to the men and women who “protect” us. They can’t be everywhere. I carry wherever I go, I practice as often as possible. I’m not a good enough shot to wound an assailant so I aim for center mass. I will defend and protect myself and my family. Just like I have and will protect my country.

  16. Just saw on the news this morning that Detroit crime is down significantly. There has only been 228 carjackings so far this year. I thought that was over the top until I heard that In 2015 there was 470. Every thing you said is spot on. Carry a weapon and train with it. Wolves pray on sheep until the sheep fight back.
The only thing I disagree with in what you said is the term “Defensive.” In a bad situation one needs to go on the “Offensive” with a vengeance. One needs to bring all resources to bear against the attacker as violently as possible.

  17. First of all, nice blog, and yes crime is on the rise and the past eight years of this administration has only added to the problem. They have accused law enforcement of racial bias and ignored the real problems if the inner cities. They have also allowed the rise of substance abuse to fester to levels not seen in decades by allowing open borders. This gives drug trafficking a route to supply local gangs with a constant supply which then get turned into cash. Gang violence is on the rise but so are robberies caused by addicts looking for money for their next fix. This added to the rest of the new crime culture has led to the rise of home invasions and thefts.
I am a strong supporter of our second amendment and now live in a state that allows me to use that right to defend my family and myself from harm. I realize some people are uneasy around firearms and I understand that, but don’t tell me that I can’t use my right to self defense.
You bring up an important issue pertaining to constant training and I fully agree. I spent ten years in the Army ( 6 years as a recon scout) and constant traing was a must to keep our skills at their best. To this day I regularly train with my firearms to keep certain levels up. Along with constant training comes safety procedures as well.
I might not suceed if an attempt is made to rob and harm us but I will go down as a defender not as a victim. For as the NRA says in there ads, ” I am freedom’s safest place.”.

  18. Hi to whom it may concern my intentions are to come in and train well to get the job done on the street. i believed that it is only training that make the different, what do i means call me up and we start our job in saving lives on the street. so as to reduce some first hand crimes from the street.
    REGARDS.

  19. I am a retired US Army infantry officer (LTC) airborne Ranger, Vietnam veteran, and, you are undoubtedly right about my probably not being properly prepared for a professional criminal. However, I do not have the time to be paranoid about that remote possibility. I live in a reasonably crime-free area of northern Michigan. Honestly the pros are few and far between. The “criminals’ here are strictly amateur wimps. I do have a concealed carry permit and do now and then actually carry, but normally only if I head out to Saginaw or Flint. Those are the heavy crime areas of the state. I know I should head out to the range to stay sharp with my weapon, but other things always seem to take precedence. That is just a fact of life. At 72, I am probably a bit over-confident in my abilities, but I can still hold my own pretty well. I don’t have one foot in the grave yet.

  20. This also applies world wide. First thing in training,be aware of your surroundings. Do threat ascessment while moving from one place to another. Avoid what you consider a threat. Fight only when forced to do so. Fight to win, there are no rules except to survive.

  21. Well, said. If anyone enters my house they will not be leaving on their own accord. I do not any problem with this, I will go out of my way to make sure that they are dead. I hate scumbags and I will send them straight to HELL. No second chance, as the old saying goes a leopard cannot change it;s spots.

  22. John says, Most good guys and good girls are so good that they are reluctant to act with violence towards an attacker, thus giving the attacker a psychological advantage. HERE is where self-talk really helps. Just imagine a scenario involving your spouse or child being harmed by the attacker. NOW imagine your responses. Thinking through possible scenarios and discussing them with your spouse will make you more likely to respond correctly and survive. THIS is basic social psychology. JUST my 2 cents. BE careful out there.

  23. All of this is very true. People need to learn that being tuff and ready to hurt someone is best for their family and community. The very toughest men I have ever known were also some of the most decent.

  24. Truth is hard to swallow at times. I’m 77 years old, but still remember a time when resistance to violence was automatic and effective. Could I still take down an attacker? Probably not, but given even a small chance, he will know he has been in one and I will tap him center mass a couple of times. I realize a sneak attack from behind can come at any time, but I have become more vigilant than ever before. I don’t practice enough, but I’ve got a life time of experience with firearms and other self defense weapons. I will not hesitate to use them. Thanks for your articles. They help imprint a mindset and are informative. I believe this country has become so clueless to the real threats to our Republic and personal safety that the cliff has already arrived and the Lemmings are going over in great numbers.

  25. When I am in a city walking I am always on guard. I look in store windows to see all around me
this came handy in DC as I notice a man slowly getting closer. At the corner we stopped for
traffic to pass as he came up behind me. I whirled around and looked him in the eye. He turned
    to cross the other street

  26. Agree with you 100%, you have to be alert all the time and practice, and dont give the enemy a chance, strike first and strike hard, stop the threat fast.

  27. I l shoot kill if my family is in danger.
Yes you need to practice all the time. to keep alert.
It is not good to stand there and talk to these individuals
    or they will kill you.

  28. As a teenager in the late ’70s i was sharp as a razor, still pretty sharp today. I joined the USMC in 1981 when the people elected a true patriot, the honorable Mr. Reagan as commander in chief. I had many incidents before and after the time i graduated Parris Island. I took a friend of mine home in 1979 when his car broke down, a black co-worker, i am white, to his apartment complex one night, we had a beer, he shook my hand and said thanks and went around the corner to his crib. i sat there a minute to finish the beer he bought me and was approached by two scroungy looking black thugs, one of them had a .25 auto in his hand and accused me of stealing car batteries in the parking lot i was in. i saw them coming and i had been target practicing the day before and had a locked and loaded Ruger Mini-14 under the seat of my 1971 mercury montego, it was almost dark so i pulled it out and just out of sight across my lap. I told the stupid bastard i took my friend home and don’t need to steal a battery because my car starts. He said ‘yeah, well, i hads to bring this out’, and started waving his pistol, I pushed the muzzle of the Mini-14 with the big flash suppressor out the window and said ‘I have to bring this out’. I opened the door and the 30 round magazine was beautiful in the parking lot lights…I told them to put the heat on the ground and back away.. they were both packing heat and did as i told them and ran away. I took their pistols and left. I let them go, but have blood on my hands from other similar incidents.

  29. Love it. Train, Train Train. You can very get enough. Don’t forget train your eyes also, do not walk around with blinders on

  30. very good info I have told people when I worked in a gun shop, you must decide now before you buy, will you and can you use it. it is too late to think when the time comes

  31. I couldn’t agree more. I am a security officer and constantly remind the people I protect, that be aware of your surroundings. Though I have been fortunate not to encounter a confrontation in six years. However, I can not express the fact strong enough that it can and does happen, at work, home and in the public. Please continue the fight training videos! Let’s face it we know that they are professional criminals and that they more an likely started at young age. Just imagine how much practice they have had beating the system.

  32. Even with my background as a Marine warfighter with the scars to prove it and 12 years in federal enforcement, my defensive skills are rustier than I like. I keep in shape, and appreciate pointers like I find here on FightFast to have some moves in the kit. The courts make it possible for felons, whether violent or larcenous, to think they can succeed in their dirty trades, or get their asses kissed if caught, in particular if members of certain minorities, depending upon the area or region. We cannot assume anything about the justice system now, so our true recourse must be US, our skills, our awareness. We owe it to our loved ones, friends, and those of like mind.

  33. always be prepared, nowadays anything can happen. Always be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to the people around you.

  34. I am a retired Police Officer and I agree with you 100%. 34 years of Law enforcement both Military and civilian and right now I dont trust our Law except for a very few and I dont trust our Gov. at all.

  35. I’m a disabled Vietnam vet. I have a one-year-old pitbull which is nothing but more than a sweet little darling he’s a baby. Will this affect her certification is being a service dog?

  36. Due to the economy in my town, the population is divided between drug user’s and retiree’s, you have to be aware and prepared all the time.
