My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. An example of crazy is an idea that makes absolutely no sense. So if being, what I call a “boy scout” is crazy, then so be it.
    Always safe, always prepared!

  2. If your looking for a knew knife people look no further than the “falkniven f1pro” it isn’t cheap but it is quality!!

  3. I carry a cheapo,49¢ snap blade knife in my shirt pocket. It is indispensable, razor sharp. In my left front pocket, I carry my Granddad’s 3 blade Case pocket knife. In back right pocket, hooked with pocket clip I carry my 326 tactical knife from Fight fast. I have more, but haven’t figured out how to carry along with wallet, phone, etc. I’m working on it.

  4. I don’t blame you I carry one but I keep two on my bed post next to my pillow but I also trained and worked out with army ranger.

  5. I see your point, l have carried 2 knives ever since I was chased along the highway when my car broke down in the dead of night some years ago. Won’t leave home without them!
    Love and Peace,

  6. I carry two knives, A buddy of mine carries two or three knives. And always a lighter never know when you might need them.

  7. No I carry 2 also. 1 that I can purposely drop so my attacker will bend down and pickup at that point is when I make my move with my backup knive

  8. Nope, I have loved knifes and guns since childhood. I carry at least two knifes With me… One in My pants and one in My jacket, and one in the car…, sooo, in My point of wiev you are fully normal..

  9. Well yup i actually carry 3 one pocket one boot an a cck in my wallet as a marine veteran i allways try to be prepared an you never know when you will need a knife there just a handy tool to have on you,, an yes my wife also thought i was a bit crazy caring some of the survival tools i carry would have on my bike, as they say is better to have an not need than to need an not have.

  10. i don’t think your crazy, I routinely carry two or three and feel naked without at least one and a lighter. Even when I wear a suit I have knives on me. Vehicles have another three bug out bags two folder and fixed. Saddle bags on Harley have a folder and fixed. Confrontations when they come are usually when u least expect and usually more then one on one. I prefer a weapon for each person u are confronted with. It’s not like tv, knives don’t scare people blood does, so don’t expect that u have pulled a knife will scare the attackers and they are not gonna just stand there your gonna get hit with weapons perhaps Or you could take a really good punch and drop your weapon, blood gets slick you could lose your grip knives don’t always come out the same way they went in and you may have to leave one to fight the others. People don’t get stabbed and stop fighting it’s not like tv, knife fights are not pretty it’s brutal and bloody hand to hand. So a backup to your backup is smart and if your wife happens to b there wouldn’t u like to give her a blade in case u go down and don’t make it? My wife knows I’ve got a blade for her and I’m armed but she has felt real ,uncomfortable in a few different situations and asked if I had my knife on me and I tell her yeah and two foe u also.

  11. I believe in carrying two knives, one i. My pocket and on on my belt. It mske sense becausr the on onmy belh is in s multi tool in a pouch on my belt.

  12. Lol. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who loves knives. I personally carry at least 3 folders on me at all times. 1 that I let others borrow to abuse , 1 that I use that I keep razor sharp and 1 for eating purpose. My personal use knives are kept shaving sharp at all times. I also keep a 12″ Bowie in my truck for that just in case moment. It’s also shaving sharp at all times. I find it relaxing touching them up with a stone. Drives the wife and dog nuts when I do it. Something about that high pitch singing that it gives off when you get it down to shaving sharp. When she irritates me I break out the different types of stones. Start with course and work my way down to fine. She really cringes when I break out the sword. I can really get it to do a long sing than.

  13. I Cary four two small pocket knifes and a defensive knife and a belt loop knife. I am a marine and I am always prepared for the unexpected situations. So u are not crazy in my book.

  14. bob i carry two at all times . but my car is a different story all are legal but if i ever get stopped by the law their gonna think i a crazy . i have at least 15 different knifes in my car in the side door panel have at least 3 3 in glove box 3 in my passengers door panel my car has a( cubby hole type of place in the doors ) in the center box between the front seats about 5 0r 6 most of them have cutting hooks and window breakers this way i can say its for protection ageist getting stuck in the car. i keep the fang in the door panel driver side . i drive through some pretty rough areas living here in Detroit suburbs. oh almost for got my bug out bag in the back. i have the gator the 5n1s and the 325s survival knife. fishing kit the pepper spray kit key chain plus( i carry the pepper spray pen all the time )
.. but i love knifes i also have my knife collection of replicas such as daggers .swords , skinning hooks , a few bowie knifes and some old pocket knifes ( old timers )and a couple military boot knifes double edged with sharp points . i don’t carry these it would almost certainly get me arrested here in Detroit.. so bob i don’t think your crazy just over protective and prepared ….

  15. As a minimum, when I leave the house I carry a Beretta folder clipped in my strong side front pocket and a Ka-Bar TDI fixed blade at about 11:00 accessible with either hand. If I grab my EDC bag on the way out (normally do) there are three more edged weapons in/on there – a multi-tool, another tactical folder, and a ‘Spike’ mounted to the Molle on the outside. If I jump in my primary vehicle there is an escape tool clipped to the shoulder belt (blade, belt cutter, and glass breaker).

One can never have too many options!

  16. No not at all I carry three knives and a multi tool. I am a believer in always being prepared for anything, and I spent 20 years in the GREEN Berets.

  17. i carry one of your knives but it is not as accessible as the knives i carried as a teenager & young man. I believe a meat knife should only be used for meat & not other purpose–just gutting, skinning, slicing. In a pinch, that would include self=defense as you are talking meat there, too, tho, as you say grisly thought. My best defense is prayer & since i’ve used that i’ve not been in a gun fight or knife fight or street fight tho boxed my brain out. I do not believe that God means for us to be unarmed for Jesus said, “Sell your belongings and purchase a weapon (sword) nor that He means we are not to defend ourselves so i carry a knife. There are tricks to make a jackknife open in your hand when you pull it out so that it appears to be alive in your hand. That alone has impressed people enough. You have good products & a good attitude. I DO carry 2 sets of keys as getting locked out is no good especially in MT winter or with the grand and great-grandkids. We just need to stop far short of being O/C. Sava? Your friend, Steve

  18. I HAVE CARRIRD YWO KNIVES ON ME SINCE I WAS A BOY, AS DID MY FATHER AND GRANDFATHER. I ALSO HAVE TWO FIXED BLADE KNIVES IN MY CAR.

  19. Your wife knows you better then I do so maybe you are crazy. but not for carrying two knifes. I carry two or more all the time . one on my belt ,one in my pocket and some times my belt knife not to mention my credit card knife in my wallet.

  20. I usually don’t even carry one, but two seems reasonable. A few or more if you are camping or boating. If I am fishing or walking the dog I will surely have one.

  21. I’ve been carrying a swiss army knife for as far back as I can remember and have a multitool in both cars and truck. I started carrying a second knife a few years ago as the terror threat such as “the lone wolf” has raised awareness.

I bought my wife one of those orange colored automobile escape tools for her car and now think your tactical multitool knife is perfect for a second knife as it has the automobile escape tools built-in.

  22. I love the knives provided by this site. But with all the trouble (gangs and other terror groups) in this day and time, I do carry a knife alone with one of my guns. It’s bad when you sit in your own driveway and some young want to be “THUGS” come up and try (I said try) and rob you. Not only has America gone crazy, but the whole world.

  23. No you’re not crazy I usually have at least three sharp instruments on me at one time folding box cutter It’s Like a Knife just switch out the razor blade whenever you need a new sharp blade blade on each side so that’s always handy Clips right into your carpenter pants or in your belt I have a belt knife it’s a double-edged pointed Buckle fits between your fingers and your palm made by a company called Bowen knives there’s always another knife in my cars various ones around the house if need be to get to tackle box whenever I go fishing and matter which tackle box I’m using there’s one there and I carry one of yours so I’m going to the teeth with blades anyway I don’t think you’re crazy I live in the state where I can’t carry my sidearm like I used to

  24. No, we need people like you to share perspectives.
I believe in 2 is 1, but you have me thinking about the boot knife scenarios and real life application
    Thank you

  25. Hey guy, I am also into knives and have been for years. I have a small collection of swords & knives, and I always have a knife with me. They are very useful tools. As far as attackers go, I always say “when you hear the click, it’s too late.

  26. I generally try to have a backup for almost everything when it comes to self defense. I have a plan a, plan b, and then contingencies as situation dictates. Hands, elbows, feet, knees and even forehead are usually plan a. If needed I’ll escelate to knives. I have a pocket knife, a boot knife, and sometimes a fixed blade at my hip. If it should come to this, my final contingency is my concealed firearm. Let’s not forget that we have plenty of other tools/devices at our desposal at any given time. Sticks, rocks, bricks, our own voice, whatever is needed as the situation dictates. In the end it all boils down to experience, skill and knowledge. Stay smart, stay alert, stay alive.

  27. Hi Bob unfortunately I’m seventy and I do like knives as I live in the country on a bit of property a knife comes in handy. I accessed your site looking for a few techniques for self defence I’m not a street fighter.
    Thanks Rob

  28. My mouth watered when I saw all these knives. My wife too, think I am crazy for carrying two knives. Hope I never have to use one in self defense, but I am half ass prepared. I am 80, but in good physical condition.

  29. If you’re crazy then I’m absolutely bonkers!! I carry 3 knifes and a tactical pen. I’ve been in a situation where I needed my knife had it but couldn’t access it.(lesson learned) you never know when you’re going to have to engage or how and under what circumstances. With saying that I hope you never half to use your knife in self defense an your wife continues to think your crazy.

  30. You arent the only one. I carry my neck knife a boot knife and my new 325s tactical folder on me every day. I sleep in my neck knife and my bootknife under the hammock. My wife thinks im nuts too but i say better safe than sorry.

  31. Hey bob I’ve been a knife maker for about a year now and i believe the knife is the single most important tool a man or woman can have! Don’t get me wrong i love my guns and i love the fact that i live in oregon, which for now i can carry my gun proudly….unfortunately it’s not a Hollywood movie so a 6 shot revolver only shoots 6 rounds and then you have to reload! And let’s face it….. Really hard to gut a fish with a gun! You have a very nice folder collection sir and alot of those look very familiar to me. I’ve mainly been building fixed blade drop point’s and clip point bowies (my favorite) infact i have plans to build a replica of the original jim bowie knife (It’s a huge endeavour) and a huge knife to boot! Anyways i Cary a fixed and a folder and am anxiously awaiting the cool folder i ordered from you….Live long live proud my good sir!

  32. I don’t always carry two on my body but I keep knives everywhere, two in my truck, one on my keychain, one in my BOB, one in a special place in the office, and one on my body. i am considering a neck knife for a second body knife, but like the boot carry idea as well, which would make 3 on me

  33. So true about knives, but the problem with them is most are what I call pocket rocks. They are just so heavy in my pockets that they pull my pants down. HA! HA! HA!
Even a trusty multi-tool with a case is like wearing a brick.
But when I don’t bring them, oh man do I regret it!
I am not going to stoop down to a man purse to carry them. Any ideas on how to carry the lightest toughest
Stuff so you can always have what you need?
Thanks for the free stuff and caring enough to offer it to us.

  34. I have a fair number of knifes myself but your collection I have to admit seems ectensive. I also agree with your mindset of carrying a second knife as an additional baclup. I carry mine around my neck.

    Barry B.

  35. I carry at least three and all over my house I can have one at any time or point in car or home just stretch out my arm and human shui you are!

  36. Since I’m in a wheelchair, I studied several different forms of the martial arts. But I also carry 3 lock blade knives, a tactical flashlight(3 way), and a co2 pistol with a 20 shot clips. And it LOOKS like a .380 semi-automatic. I’m also in a wheelchair. If none of my weapons work, I’d just run over the attacker.

  37. Hi Bob… Knives have always been part of my EDC. That started in the Cub Scouts.
I currently have a Utilikey with my keys, a Mini Leatherman in my coin purse, a 325s on one side, a Swiss Army Knife in the other pocket, and a Bucktool on my belt. Sometimes I wear a Ka-Bar Folding Utensil Set to picnics.
There are several blades in my vehicle, in the glove box, the 5in1 knife, in my BOB, a Fang, a Stone Mountain Folder, another 5in1, 2 different machetes, and a hatchet.
I also have my old hunting knife, and a Spanish Army Knife near the bed.
Overprepared? That word should not be in anyone’s vocabulary today.
I like to have the right tool for the job at hand! Thank you for the products you share, and God bless!
