My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

Pocket Knives

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool

A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

So what do you think?

Am I the only one who carries two knives? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. We have a lot in common, I also have an every day carry and a backup depending on what I’m involved in that day. Hunting fishing and kayaking require different types. Fortunately I have never had the need to use them for self defense. That’s what the .38 special is for. I use a neck knife when kayaking, I also have a small boot lace knife for the woods or urban walking.
My dad was a collector of high end knives and had all kinds of knives and knife bibles.

  2. No I carry several knives on me anytime I leave the house my wife thinks I’m f***ing a nutcase to but I’ve got pocket knives I got knives in my backpack I’ve got a mini survival kit in my backpack I’ve got a gun I’m armed to the hilt and I don’t think I’m crazy but everybody else does.

  3. If the SHTF, bullets would get used up, no matter how much ammunition you have! After that it’s knives, swords and spears and if you’re prepared, a bow with lots of arrows!

  4. I never carry less than 3. A 3″lock blade folder, folding utility, and a real small 2 blade pen knife. At work, got 3 more to do my job, they stay at work. Keep several more in my weapons bag I take everywhere I go. Anyone that’s savvy knows if you carry 24/7/365 you also carry a knife. Got ones just for hunting, others for fishing.
Bottom line. There is no “do it all” knife or gun. That’s why I got lots of different types of each.

  5. Crazy like a fox. I carry my k – bar, my buck, and a gentleman’s blade. I love fix blade knifes. In some instances a knife is superior to a gun. That’s why I ordered the spike. Keep ontrucking my friend

  6. Well, I guess people think that I’m INSANE then, because I carry a PHANTOM co2 BB pistol, as well as 3 THUNDER BOLT 5 1/2″ throwing knives, 3 TRS.X8 STINGER throwing knives, 2 lock blade knives, 1 MaSTER spring assist knife, as well as my TORCH tactical flashlight with me at all times. My theory is, GO BIG, OR GO HOME. You guys have the best equipment and videos anywhere. I’m on disability, so it takes time to get everything that I want, but, I’m hoping to one day have everything that you offer.

  7. Carrying two knives is not unusual and is neither crazy nor paranoid. The right tool for the job comes to mind. Your reasons are well thought out and considering the possibilities quite valid. A good imagination combined with thinking ahead and being prepared in mind , body and equipment can and will save Your life and the lives of others. I will give You another scenario , perhaps Your attacker manages to knock Your weapon from Your grip or worse, he may even gain possession of Your primary weapon or knife. Another consideration is that there may be two or more attackers. The point is You cannot usually determine the time place or circumstance when You can be set upon by two legged wolves. What you do if and when something bad happens will be determined by your mental awareness , preparedness and your determination and will to survive.

  8. For various reasons, I am not going to go into detail on just how many blades I carry, (at all times). Suffice it to say that 1) you are NOT crazy for carrying multiple blades, & 2) you are most certainly NOT alone in doing so.

There’s a science fiction story that I read long ago, I believe it was written by Robert A. Heinlien, where the main character carried multiple blades, and had a very particular manner in which he carried those blades. That story basically shaped my entire philosophy regarding blades & firearms, I carry both and have done so for most of my entire life.

When Shtuff Hits The Fan (not a question of “if” but rather “when”), it is my plan & my intention to be as prepared as I can be. By the grace of God, I shall be, & am daily taking steps to be so prepared.

In conclusion, I wish to pass on / teach – 2 Highly important points:
    1) It is VITAL that your BEST weapon be as finely honed as possible, that weapon is your BRAIN! Do so through a close and daily walk with God, as well as proper nutrition and healthy diet. After that comes your body and exercise and training is the path to achieve that goal. Train your body BOTH without wepons and with weapons.
    2) From personal experience, I’ve found that the vast majority of people focus on carrying a firearm, they’ll train with that firearm, become highly proficient in its use. However, they do so to the almost if not TOTAL EXCLUSION of training with a blade as well as unarmed combat. Far too many unknowingly are placing their survival upon having that firearm, and might find themselves completely lost & or helpless upon running out of ammo or having their firearm taken away from them. Furthermore, I’ve seen way to many youths getting all cocky just because they have their Rifle & or Pistol with them, and feeling all “bullet proof”, they’ll run into danger when a stealthy approach would have proven far more advantageous and saved both their own lives as well as the lives of others (which was the purpose for our being there in the first place.) Training with a Blade as well as unarmed combat, can assist you in thinking through potentially life threatening situations, where dependence on a firearm ALONE could get you killed. THEN, when you are confronted with a situation where other lives (& even your own), hang in the balance, you may discover that your decisions not only come quickly, but are far better balanced and will yield a positively fruitful outcome.

    Here Endeth the Lesson

  9. I don’t think your crazy its always good to have a backup of everything I as well put my knife under my pillow because we live in a bad neighborhood in a bad world I’m glad I came a crossed your web site for self defense it is very useful sorry I haven’t purchased anything I don’t have any money and when I do have some its in cash I don’t have a bank account open I’m having a little bit of trouble with legal documents but when I do get one open you can bet your ass I’ll get a few things thanks for the videos you been sending me there really helpful

  10. Absolutely 2 knives. These beautiful knives I have been ordering from fight fast are perfect for this. One knife covers 5 Purposes? Folks that is a no brainer, take it with you. Then pick another knife to use throughout the day at work. Love it !!!

  11. Let’s see…
    Leatherman (2 blades)
    Hoffman Richter mini multitool
    Money clip (mtech)
    TRS 325 (defense blade)
Small knife w/clip for nail cleaning and other
    dirty jobs.

  12. Not crazy at all, even though my wife thinks im crazy as well and pissed about everything i have bought from here. I also carry an assault pack with me everywhere i go,i keep a pistol,6 mags, water filtration device,3 fixed blades,4 folders,4 flashlights, solar blanket, tactical pen,3 carabiners,550 cord, fire starters, solar power battery bank, snares, and a few other things. Maybe i am crazy, but i have 6 kids as well and if we are out i want enough to get us back home if shtf. But like you said i have knives, swords, tomahawks, and all stashed all throughout the house and property (out of reach of the kids of course)but im a disabled vet and ive seen some bad things so its always on my mind of what could happen. Its always a good idea to have more than 1 backup plan in my opinion.

  13. I love and intrigued at the same time seems like a good offer
But I’m not going against your wife in what u said that she said

  14. No I don’t think your crazy, but I only carry one at a time, a Boker auto, and I only carry automatic knifes ? !!!

  15. Bob, this makes sense and in this place we call Earth the more sense it makes the better off we will be.

  16. As Waylon Jennings sang…I’ve always been crazy, but it kept me from going insane:). I carry a fixed blade on my belt, one folding in my pocket, sometimes if the situation warrants …a boot knife.(neighborhood isn’t the best;) , plus I have one in an advantageous spot in my car, …hmm guess I need to get a chest scabbard 😉

  17. Bob…I always have 2 knives on me…more, perhaps, from a practical point of view. I grew up on a ranch and, I’ll tell you, all of us were using our knives all the time. We were also taught, at an early age, how to sharpen our knives. We all carried a small whet stone with us. The large number of current designs pretty much floors me. Both of mine are folders. A cattleman’s and a smaller one.

  18. More comment…we live in SW NM. I tell folks that if I ever see three cars at once we are having a traffic jamb! Can’t imagine living in some busy, busy place called a “city.”

  19. I live in EXTREME Backwoods (N.E.Wyoming) I always have 3 blades on me at all times, my fixed blade belt Knife (Fallkniven A-1 or Buck 120 in 5160 steel), front left pocket is my “Spyderco Civilian” (it’s used for ONLY ONE reason) my back left pocket is my “Spyderco Lg. Leaf” from S30V steel. I know some who call me “paranoid” -as a disabled 60 yr. young survivor of 18 yrs. of “Biker Lifestyle” (when only outlaws rode Harley’s), 30 yrs. offshore (20 as a fitter/welder, 10 as a Inspector/Project Specialist) , I have learned that the “Masses in City Living” will go to any extremes to get what they want- they also have NO common sense. That’s my main reason for living so far out (the nearest Wal-mart is 70 miles away)- the chance of me running across a Coyote, Mountain Lion, Timber Rattler or other “safe species” are better than some “Citified Human” who wants to steal my stash of supplies, my 80 yr. young mother feels very safe as long as I’m here (she won’t go to the door if someone knocks – unless I’m home) We live in “uncertain times”, I’m certain I’ll survive unless Yellowstone “Burps”- Be Prepared for the worst, it could be right around the corner

  20. I do the same I must be crazy also I wear my boot knife and then another somewhere else but I agree with what you blogged about

  21. I’m crazy too because I carry two,one large folder on my belt and a fixed blade inverted inside my jacket it hangs on a loop attached to the outer shell of my leather jacket and has a fabric band across the sheath sewn to the lining to keep it vertical.I can reach it with either hand and it’s protected but very quick to the hand if I need it in a hurry

  22. The red one, on the right, is my choice. I have one. Very handy!
I’m beyond exploring, o/t internet and agree with your wife.
You may be crazy, but I’m considered walking ‘squirrel’ bait.
Cheer up, there are a lot of us and enjoy it.
Have a good day and stay away from nets.
    David of Dogpatch

  23. I am a knife collector too. I collect knives with whitetail deer on them. It’s getting harder and harder to find ones that I don’t already have.

  24. If you restrict yourself to 2 knives, you are not prepared.

Five Pocket Blue Jeans are my usual style of dress and that allows me to carry more knives. The watch pocket carries the Swiss Army Classic. My right pocket has a small Gerber, the name I forget. it has a Philips and Slotted screw driver, a small blade, tweezers, and an awkward scissors. My left pocket carries my working blade, the one most people will see. A rear pocket contains a blade that only comes out for self defense. My right pocket carries a rather flat Gerber clip knife, I forget the name. The main purpose is as a key ring to carry my car key so I don’t lock myself out. My left pocket has another Gerber, a skeleton knife. 3 1/2 inch blade, it would be a self defense blade, if necessary. From time to time I may carry another knife or to for different reasons. Why, because I can. Am I nuts, more than likely so. My wife hates it.

  25. My late wife thought I was crazy! I always carry a utility knife two defense knives and a 3 blade Cattleman’s pocket knife. Have defended myself a half-dozen times in the past 20 years. Have stopped two armed robberies in convenience stores by pressing the end of the handle of a defensive knife into the back of the robber. Yes! You and I are crazy!

  26. A special thank you from South Louisiana! I really enjoy using each & every knife you sent me. The quality & craftsmanship are A-1.
    Johnny.

  27. I carry at lest 3 or 4 on my person at any one time from a little 1 1/2 in with 3blades ,a multi tool and a 4 1/2 in folder then I have many for hunting and some for bush craft . So yes I am a knife nut too.

  28. I’m carrying three right now! One on my belt close to my tactical flashlight/stun gun, one in my belt loop at the appendix carry position and one in my right side pocket with my tactical pen and laser. The one that I carry in my right side pocket just so happens to be the one that I just got from you guys, and I’ve got to tell you I’m highly impressed with it so far. The TRS 5 in 1 EDC that I just got from you guys arrived about a week ago and it impressed me when I took it out of the box, and tested its edge like I do any new knife when I took it across my forearm and it shaved a patch of hair off of my forearm!

I’m like you bro, I carry more than one knife! The reason for that is in case of a self defense situation unless I’ve burned the puke’s retina with a 532nm green laser, and in case I can’t get to one I can get to one of the others unless the punk is a quivering pile from a 5,000,000 volt sting. And, YES I will be carrying a gun eventually. I’ve just got to get my CCW unless the state of Indiana passes Constitutional Carry before then, which I will still carry three knives plus my other EDC.

  29. Nope you are not…and my wife thinks I am nuts too. But when the time comes and I have to protect us both…she will then appreciate my over active mind.
