My Wife Thinks I’m Crazy for Doing This…

Am I losing my mind?

Maybe… But I sure as hell never want to be caught without a knife. That’s why I recently started carrying two of them, every day. Why two knives you ask? Here are just a few reasons:

For Everyday Use

First, I use a knife every day for utility purposes. By carrying knives with different sizes and blade shapes it’s more likely that I will have a better tool for the job. I can also carry one knife that is my “beater” (The one I don’t hesitate to get muddy, sticky, or greasy).

For Self-Defense

Next, in a self-defense situation you never know if the knife kept on your dominant side will be inaccessible. Perhaps an attacker has you pinned against a wall, has control of your arm, etc.

Also, if forced to stab an attacker, it is very possible the knife will be difficult to recover, a grisly thought but it is a real problem (Muscles tend to clench around the blade). If there is a second attacker you’ll be glad you brought a backup.

Self-Defense Situation Number 3 (okay, my overactive imagination is probably the real reason my wife thinks I’m crazy): Carrying blades on different portions of the body can be an advantage if you are taken to the ground. This is a great reason to carry a boot knife. I can keep going with the self-defense scenarios but I think you get the point.

As a Survival Tool



A knife is also one of the two most critical survival tools we have (a fire source being the second). As the old saying goes “Two is one, and one is none.” You can expect that if the SHTF you’d immediately drop your one and only knife into a mud hole, or it would fall out of a pocket in the dark. A backup is just common sense.

Okay, you can see that there are a lot of good reasons to carry two knives. Even so, some people may question my logic by saying that if this were the case we may as well carry two of everything—two sets of keys, two wallets, two cell phones, etc.

Here’s the Thing

It’s possible for us to take preparation to such an extreme that it becomes impossible to lead a normal life. The difference, especially with knives, is the relative ease of carrying two. With so many knives on the market it is easy to find a backup that is inconspicuous, small, and comfortable. What I’m trying to say is that the downside is so small and the upside so large that it’s simply a no-brainer, at least for me.

  3. For the 75-year-old lady with arthritis and a bad back. No knife you just carry will be of much benefit because you would be unpracticed with it. A medium-size, easy to open folding knife would be best for you. Use it all the time to cut yarn or thread, sharpen pencils, clean your nails, etc. so that you are familiar with it. You probably will never need it for cutting a bad buy or slicing a rope you’ve been tied with, but on the very slim possibility that you DO need it for something like that, you’ll have it and know how to use it.

  4. When I’m in public I have 7-8 potential weapons
    on me (none of them visible). I have two hip replacements and cannot run from danger. I would have to contend with my assailants. Let the chips
    fall, someone’s going to bleed!

  8. You’re not crazy, any more than I am. I carry three. AT ALL TIMES!!! I carry one in my right front pocket for every day, cutting wrap no round bales of hay, etc… I also carry one in my left rear pocket that has a clip on it, so it doesn’t fall out. The third on is on a chain around my neck. I learned the value of that in some very narrow tunnels in southeast Asia.

  9. If you are crazy then I must be a complete nut. I’ve been carrying two knives for years. Hell if I’m completely honest I carry three …. or more. It depends on where I’m going or what I’m doing and there is always plenty of options in the night stand beside the bed. Like you said, “no brainier”.

  10. I agree 100% with you. A carry 1 pocket knife for every day use and one clip on from you for self defense. I also keep one from you at bed side and one in my office.

  11. I am a life long martial artist and Kravist. I am also an electrician. I use a knife everyday and Yes I do carry more than 1. I have a Fox Dart on my left side for easy opening with my left hand. Folding utility knife in my front right pocket and the Krudo Snag in my rear right pocket. Always stay prepared!

  14. I carry at least three knives on me at all times. My primary is a Cold Steel Ti Lite VI. I showed it to my local sporting goods dealer and he said, “My God man, thats a sword not a knife”. It is for self defense only and actually fits in my pocket without notice. My secondary is a Spyderco Tenacious. It does the bulk of my grunt work. I use it virtually every day. My third is a small SOG with a 1 1/2″ blade for those small chores like taking the paper cover under Ketchup bottle tops off. I use this knife is almost a daily use also. I live in an earthquake prone area and those knives live in my two front pockets of my pants and there if I need to evacuate quickly and for any multitude of uses. I forgot to mention that I also carry a Gerber Dime mini multitool that also has a small blade along with other useful tools that I actually use.

  17. I have carried 2 or more most of my life. I don’t know what to do without atlest 2 on myself daily. I have been collecting cence I was 8 years old, and after cancer I have made it to 52,I also like fixing them.

  19. Guilty of the same. Im just a sucker for a cool looking useful blade. I have many. Will have many more before im through. Carrying 2-3 @ at a time is normal as putting wallet in back pocket everyday. Have ordered cool shit from you as well….so thanks for decent prices mostly.🇺🇸

  20. Have carried two since my first TAD trip in the Navy. After retirement and 10 years in hospital security and 20 in health insurance it has garnered me several odd looks. Both are CRKT’s. Both excellent, clipped in front pockets. Carry a 6-inch Bowie at the back and a Remington .45 commander as daily wear. (Just cause the world is a weird place anymore.) Collect Bowie’s of various sizes if balanced well.

  21. Not hardly! I carry a Gerber Multi tool, which includes a knife blade that takes a keen edge and keeps it. I also carry a Smith and Wesson, first model 24-7. This is a single blade, half serrated. The blade is short, wide and thick. In other words, a brute. This blade also takes a great edge and always has one.

  23. I don’t think your crazy at all. I carry 3 knives on me all the time. One main on my right hand side, one behind at wallet on my left side and the other deep conceal carry.

I routinely carry three blades: a 3.5″ folding belt knife (carried horizontally but NEVER hidden), a multi blade swiss army knife (pardon the plug, but Victorinox, IMHO, makes the best one out there) and a small pen knife on my key ring. Occasionally I will also carry a clip on folder with a glass breaking point and a seat belt cutter, in addition to it’s folding blade.

    If going bushwhacking, I’ll add a fixed blade or two, my favorite being a “Kit Carson” Imperial model from the 1970’s.

    As a bladed weaponry enthusiast, I do not own a firearm (but respect and defend your right to do so).

  30. Straight blade. I used a venerable Buck 110 to defend myself once.
    The lock failed (don’t know why).
    I nearly cut off a couple of my own fingers.
    Didn’t notice until some time after the attack.
    When a paramedic wanted to see the blood all over my hand.
    So i will not use a folder for defense and a liner lock?
    Just surrender and hope for mercy (not really, just making a point).
    I own some fabulous folders and would in a pinch use one as survival is the point.
    However my dedicated field/defense blades are all straight, full tang blades.

  31. I was out camping with son and grandson. Son had a new kukri, but he wanted it sharper. He asked, “Do you have a knife sharpener with you?” Then, as I removed my sharpener from my pocket, he smacked his forehead and said, “That was a stupid question, wasn’t it?” Later when I had a knife out for some task, the grandson asked, “How many knives do you have, Grandpa?” Counting a tiny X-acto blade on a Gerber Artifact in my pocket, a Leatherman Micra, a Chad Los Banos subcom I use for a money clip, an Emerson CQC clipped in a pocket, a SOG faux key with a foldout blade on my keychain, and a small stainless pocket knife with a tiny, ultra sharp claw type blade I was given as a medical student over 50 years ago by the Eli Lily drug company (useful for emergency tracheostomies), I counted 6 blades. You are correct in that a single blade does not serve for all purposes. There was a Morakniv fixed blade, inexpensive sheath knife lying nearby, but not at the time attached to my belt. That would have made 7.

    In a drawer in my closet there is a small pocket knife with some minor damage, a Camillus, that my father gave me when I was 6 years old. It was damaged when he gave it to me! I take care of my knives.

  33. at least two – a good folder and one that is ‘undetectable’ (no metal content). Cold Steel makes a whole line of this stuff: not my go-to of choice, but TSA hasn’t snagged one yet. And – it only has to work once…

  37. I have a Box Full of Fixed Blades, Bigger than a Shoe Box, and another box with Folders of many kinds. I am never without a knife, and for the last few years two all the time. I have an old Schrade, three blade Well Uncle Henry that I have carried for over thirty five years. My wife told someone once that if I had my pants on I had a Knife, or two. The day I bought that knife, I bought two of them, thinking that I would put one up, I had my youngest Son with me, and decided to give him the second one. Here a couple of years ago I said something about carrying the same knife for so long, and my son was with me, he reached in his pocket and came out with his knife, and said I have had this one for just as long. I still carry that UH, as well as a Steletto by Steel River, or an Enforcer. They look almost just alike. I have started carrying the Spike, and thinking about the Fang, as well as a Glock G-23. Just depends on how bad things get, with this Virus.

  39. I carry every day and even sleep with knife/s. Build knifes heat treat and forge Damascus and usually attend the blade show know some of the best custom guys etc ,but I/we are not inexpensive if you really want a custom made just for you I can hook you up with the best Microtech/Tony Marfione etc

  40. I’ve always carried a knife since my Dad gave me my Scout knife when I was a Cub Scout. I have quite a collection with several by famous knife makers valued at thousands of dollars apiece. I carry an automatic knife every day which was legal size in my last State but not in my present State. Some States have unreasonable knife laws. My search lately has been for a good knife lube that would protect Damascus, steel and any knife blade from rust and aging. I’ve just come up with several products that are for guns (good for my gun collection) but questionable for knife maintenance. Does anybody out there have any suggestions for a good knife lube?   41. Many of you all may be veterans. I’m a veteran of two military services myself. You may have been trained in knife or bayonet fighting in the military, as I was. One of the things that I like about Fight Fast is their DVD collection of martial arts and knife fighting presentations. Great for refresher and new technique training. You can’t just strap on a knife or put one in your pocket and figure that you’re ready to take on the world. There are lots of thugs out there ready, willing and able to take that knife away from you and use it against you unless you’re better trained and ready for action than they are. Just a little word to the wise. Be prepared!

  43. My wife gets really upset with me for having so many knives. I carry 2 one for work, one for defense. I have at least one defense knife or long blade in every room in my house readily available to use. I will never stop collecting. I love your offers .. now if I can just sneak by the little woman……

  44. I carry 2, one in my pocket & one usually were I can get to it quickly if needed. My husband usually carries 1!but he is much larger, stronger, and has many more skills than myself. I have just started training with your knife throwing set & dvd and I love it. We have a 28 yr old son that is in the N Guard, so after loosing a couple knives I’ve learned to always order 3 instead of 2 because as soon as he visits and sees a new one in my collection He has to have one as well. My husband does like his other weapons as well but I have always been partial to knives. Although the knife pictured above I found to be very heavy, my husband & son agreed & they are both over 6’2” and in good shape. Being someone with small hands like myself it was rather awkward as well but I think it was mostly the weight. I keep it in the car because of the escape features on it. I have another vehicle escape tool with multiple features that came as a gift that is much lighter that I keep in the primary vehicle but it’s a nice backup.
