Jim West Will Be Here To Talk About Knives

Hey, FightFast Hotlist:

Our good friend Jim West (official U.S. Special Forces badass) is going to be here in the FightFast studios on August 22 through the 24th. This is going to be fun and instructive as he’ll be fielding questions from our hotlist. We’re concentrating on knives and defending yourself with a blade, but you can ask anything you want.

So, if you’d like to partake in the action, leave your questions in the comments section below. We’re going to ask him the top 50 questions submitted (minus any repeats), so submit your questions right away.

While he’s here, West will also do some hands-on demonstrations with our very popular Black Ops knife, along with another “secret weapon” we haven’t revealed to the public yet. We will also be giving away a FREE GIFT during the live event. It’ll be a random draw from anyone who submitted a question.

Watch Live

You can watch this question and answer interview LIVE. Here’s how:

  1. Subscribe to our YouTube channel by going to YouTube and searching for “FightFast”. Once you’ve found our channel, simply click the “Subscribe” button.
  2. The interview with Jim will take place on the last day, Wednesday August, 24th at 10 AM Pacific standard time.

Submit Your Questions Now!

It isn’t often that you can shoot the breeze with a U.S. Special Forces combat vet. West has been in the thick of combat. He knows more about fighting—hand to hand and with a weapon—than just about anyone else on the planet.

So, submit your questions, subscribe to the FightFast YouTube channel, and then watch Jim West live on August 24. After the interview, we will announce the winner of the FREE GIFT. See you there!

For a safe life…

  2. If you could only use one type of steel to make your dream survival knife, which steel would that be?

  3. Jim,
Thank you for your service, first in the field, and now giving us your knowledge that could save lives on the home front.
    For civilian personal defense: what blade length and shape do you recommend;
    which body parts would you target first to end a fight;
    would you prefer to slash or stab to disable your opponent;
and what knife would you carry?
    Thanks,

    Greg

  4. As a Vietnam era Air force Vet I just wanted to say “Welcome Home Brother” and thanks for your service.

  5. No question’s. I’m Vietnam Special Forces. I just wanted to say ” Job well done & welcome home”. De Oppresso Liber !

  6. I’m a huge fan of the M3 knife, the M4 bayonet, the M7 bayonet, and the blade of the M5A1 (or whatever they called it). In other words, I really like that blade style and size. My question for you is: what’s your opinion of the blade style I’ve just mentioned vis-a-vis the M9 bayonet?

  7. Why do most knives come with a serrated blade section ? To me in hand to hand I feel that it could cause a hang-up

  8. What was the one knife you absolutely needed to have on any of your missions? Which was most effective?

  9. A s an 83 y/o Korean vet, I really don’t have too many questions, I have lived & hunted in Alaska most of my life, have survived very well.

  10. Good morning to you Mr. Jim West, I hope and trust that you are doing very well sir. My name is Weston Knight and I thank you very much for your service to our country sir. I was wondering what you thought of the Kurkuri as a multipurpose tool (from bushcraft duties to self defense). I have the “Bushcrafter-Kurkuri 7.0 by Tops Knives. I do know that in this gun world, thinking of knife fighting my not be a wise thing to do, (even for those of us in Kali and Silat). I value the opinion of professionals and all who know more than I know (and quite frankly that’s most folks) so I’m continually learning and putting learned information into my mental toolbox. I thank you very much for your time and your knowledge sir. Take care.

  11. What is the most important thing a person can do to take care of and protect their family? Weapons are great to have but they are not always accessible.

  12. What is the best length and thickness for quick kill in times of serious survival, that is reasonably carried under clothing, for 150 person, for penetration, not slashing.

  13. Not really a question, but thank you for your time, service, and sacrifice for all of us here in the U.S.A.

  14. Mr. West how do you keep from broadcasting your moves to the adversary. I have always carried knifes, but one I carry for backup and easy to hide is just two inches long. Do you have a preferred first strike target for small knifes. I know knifes should be sharp and kept sharp but how sharp should a defense knife be, how do you carry your knife, sheath or other method? Could you talk a little about sheath care, types of lasting protectant to use ect…. Thanks for your time and your service!!

  15. actually I have two questions..
    1. since there are many different styles or forms of knife fighting which one do you see as the best?
and 2. if you could only carry one all purpose knife (defense, survival, ect) what would you choose?

  16. When passing a corner you are surprised by a mugger lunging at you from 15 feet, what is the best knife target on the mugger to stop the attack or other action to take?

  17. Hello, I’m a Vietnam Era Vet, and this is just “my opinion” – but the only ones who should be called a hero are those who “couldn’t come back”. As far as being wounded etc., that’s a “one possible aspect” of being in the job (military). All who entered should’ve known that (I do know, done that!). Without choosing a knife that you have to surrender your title/get loan to purchase, which 20 knives would you own? I understand the concept of which one that’ll do the job – is good enough. Looking for insight from a certified “knife-aholic”! Thanks, be safe, take care, “GOD Bless”, sincerely Randy.

  18. Hi Jim: I have a reasonable collection of antique cris daggers from Indonesia and Malaysia. What kind of oil would you recommend I keep lightly on the blades to keep then fresh? Thanks! Bob

  19. Hello Jim, My question is: What is the best blade length for an effective defensive/offensive carry knife? Also what is the best blade symmetry for this purpose: tanto, bowie, etc.

  20. Mr. West: I would appreciate knowing how you care for your knives and the best way to put an edge on a worn blade. A good knife that has not been well-cared for will be worthless for hunting and self-defense. There are many varieties of knives, so if time permits, pick 3 or 4 of the most common types and elaborate on how you have to change the techniques for care to be optimized for the type of blade (e.g. sharpening a dagger vs. a KA-BAR, dealing with serrations on a blade, etc..). This depends on what limitations on time of course. At the very least, a good primer on keeping a blade in good condition and a generic sharpening technique for the sharpest blade would certainly be an excellent start. I have never been able to put an edge on a blade that would cut paper. Just being honest and letting you know my skill level (or lack of). Many thanks!

Best regards, Mike Jergens (Marion, IA)

  21. I carry my knife horizontally on my left side when I’m in public, figure I can use which ever hand isn’t occupied. Good idea or bad? I would really like to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks

  22. Hey Jim,
Thanks for sharing your time with us. What is the best all around concealable self defense knife?

  23. Mr. Pierce, Thanks for the opportunity to speak.; pass to another for the privlege. Always, Hong

  24. What is the shortest effective blade length for lethal self defense ? I’m an old fart and any altercation needs to be up close, quick, effective. Neck, armpit, inner thigh, are my best guess. Still minimum effective length.

  25. What does a guy do if you are up against someone with a knife and somehow you end up getting disarmed/separated from your knife.

  26. what is the best weapon for close fighting, besides your body parts, like monkey fist, knives, ect

  27. I have read and seen a lot about how to “properly” hold and use a knife in a fight, so, my question is….What is the best way to hold a knife in a fight (for SF)? The blade going straight up (the blade extending from the thumb and forefinger) or upside down ( the blade extending from below the pinky finger)?

  28. Hey Jim,
First , let me say ” Thank You ” for your service.
In a hand to hand combat, Where should my first and most effective blow be placed ?

  29. Where is the most practical part of the body for a lady to carry a knife, who doesn’t wear a belt or boots?

  30. Mr. West,

If you carry (or were to carry) a concealed knife for self-defense purposes, where are the top three places you would recommend to carry it for the best concealment and access to it?

  31. I am a 72 yr old woman whose spine is deteriorating rapidly. Unfortunately, my Drs. are all located in a city where crime against srs is rampant. I have a CHL and am well trained. I am interested in a back-up defense as I am well aware that accessing a firearm might be impossible in many situations. Please make some suggestions regarding a possible knife. Thank you so much

  32. If you are in a knife fight, how do you keep your knife and hands from getting slippery with blood?

  33. What’s the best way to learn how to throw knives with accuracy? Also, do we throw by the blade or the handle?
    Ty very much.

  34. I read a book a while back. The dad was confronted when his son was found hunting with a .22 rifle. Which had been outlawed. His family then had to watch as their home was ransacked, Every dish broken. Every pillow bed and cushion slashed. Walls. Cabinets. furniture. Everything torn open by the GOV’T. This type of behavior develops a mindset for revenge, without remorse. Nobody has this until they beg to instill it into you. Please advise: Good, quick, and simple knife moves revolve around what, say…what arteries for instance? To take out an attacker? To take out a watchman? Same ?s for a dog?

  35. as I see it coming. I ask you this question will America repeat history & the stock market crash in October & the usa be attacked by our enemies from over seas?

  36. Wow, how much MORE extra stuff will you guys do for us? This is wonderful.
Q: I am an elderly widow, and have my knives, but cannot take the training; so, in a pinch, where is the
best place to stick an unexpected attacker?
Q: Despite that I have the 25-year Food for Patriots, if the power is out but the gas is still on, can I
cook it on my gas stove? (When power is out here, I can light the stove with matches.)
If not, what other options are available besides solar?
Q: Knowing nothing about guns, and worried about home invasion in a small area, what is the best
one to buy? Am thinking of a .22 or something small, for close quarters defense.
Thanks for everything: The good stuff, the great info, and the fast deliveries1

  37. Hey Jim,my name is Pamela Smallman. Here’s my question. I am a woman and I am pretty strong, however most men are stronger. So I want to know what is the best knife for a female to carry and whare is the best area on the body to use it if I’m ever attacked? Oh, by the way I love this site. Very informative. Thanks
