Jim West Will Be Here To Talk About Knives

Hey, FightFast Hotlist:

Our good friend Jim West (official U.S. Special Forces badass) is going to be here in the FightFast studios on August 22 through the 24th. This is going to be fun and instructive as he’ll be fielding questions from our hotlist. We’re concentrating on knives and defending yourself with a blade, but you can ask anything you want.

So, if you’d like to partake in the action, leave your questions in the comments section below. We’re going to ask him the top 50 questions submitted (minus any repeats), so submit your questions right away.

While he’s here, West will also do some hands-on demonstrations with our very popular Black Ops knife, along with another “secret weapon” we haven’t revealed to the public yet. We will also be giving away a FREE GIFT during the live event. It’ll be a random draw from anyone who submitted a question.

  6. 32months in Viet-Nam-purple hearts and some unit stuff and 10yr’s UP(motorcycle)
doz.’s of street fight including knives and guns and boo-coo other situtations
and I have yet to find anything BETTER than a Marine Corps issue KBar
    what say you?

  7. Dear Jim

In a conflict situation that looks like it is about to turn physical, do you have any favourite fail safe moves, if so, what are they ?

  8. I am a US MARINE SCOUT/SNIPER Vietnam era. I broke three K-BARS on missions. So I would like to know if they improved them since then? I did leave a broken one in the forhead of a NVA Captain as a souvenir.

  9. What is the best grip to use on the knife, which is better for a tactical situation a serrated blade or non serrated?
Lastly what are your best strikes for a combatant wearing heavier clothing attacking you?

  10. Jim, I have an Nephew who is crazy about knives. He was in the Navy and owns several knives and carries some of them with him all the time. His latest surprise was building an campfire, he pulls out an knife and starts whacking on an old dry hardwood limb for the fire.
After beating the daylights out of that limb for 15-20 minutes, I laughed at him and chided him about how dull that thing would be and how useless it would be for self defense. He begged the differ with me and proceeded to shave some hair off his arm. He was delighted and I was astounded still believing a gun any gun would be a better defense unit than his crazy tree whacking knife or any knife for that matter. So Jim – Educate me as to the use of an knife in defense of an gun wielding attacker.

  11. HOW MANY TIMES U HAD TO DEFENED AGAINST A SKILLED KINFE HOLDER WHILE U COMPLELETLY UNARMED, REAL INSTRUCTOR THAT SERVED IN THE FRENCH LEGION, SAY HE JUST ONCE HAD TO DEFENED AGAINST A KNIFE ATTACK, AND HE SAY HE WAS NOT ABLE TO USE WHAT HE NORMALY TEACH TO SOLIDER THAT R ALWAYS IN HOT SPOT, GURU DAN INSANTO THE FATHER OF AMERICAN KALI IN HIS VIDEOS AND BOOKS SAY IT VERY HARD TO DEFENED AGAINST A KINFE ATTACK IF U EMPTY HANDED,GRAND MASTER DAN IVAN THE ONE HOW REALY USED HIS MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING, SAY IT NOT A GRANTE THAT U CAN FACE AN ARMED ATTACKER, THE QUESTION IS , MR JIM R U MORE EXPERIENCED THEN THESE 3 GREAT MASTERS AND U CAN TEACH ME HOW TO DEFENED AGAINST SKILLED KNIFE ATTACK,

  12. I love knives and usually always carry one with me. Which styles do you believe just do it best? I don’t know much about knives but it would be great to hear the different styles and the pros and cons for each.

  13. You have just received very classified orders, the destination of which are still not cleared for dissemination. In a special pre-briefing, you learn that it is likely you will meet and engage very well trained hostiles. This opposing force can not be left intact, as the mission is highly classified, and witnesses to the operation will not be tolerated, and are to be treated with extreme prejudice. It is the wishes of the commanders and others that gunshots not occur, but realize it is likely inevitable. This not withstanding, you and your team are encouraged to make full use of knives. What do you chose. knowing that you are likely to use that weapon for protection, for eating. for any sort of use as would be encountered in a field operation. Do you chose a dual edge blade, 1/2 and 1/2 straight and serrated, what metal and RH hardness, how about a carrier, Kydex, leather, something else?

  14. What is the best technique to use with a knife in a fight to hold a knife whilst keeping it out a reach of your opponent and making it harder for them to take it from you? I have heard many opinions and have been taught many techniques, so I want to know what you say. This asked with the understanding that a knife is used in a fight as a last resort.

  15. I broke the tip of my Camillus Butterfly folder. How or who can fix that for me? It has a lot of sentimental value to me.

  16. .
What is your advice if someone finds themself in a position where they have to defend against a knife ?

  17. I have 2 young sons, 10 and 8. They are quite vulnerable to bullying. There are 2 martial arts classes nearby, one in boxing and on in Japanese ju jistsu. Which would give them more confidence to deal with bullying?

  18. I always carry a tactical folder with me at all times do you recommend carrying a fixed blade? If so, what is the best way to conceal it while still making it accessible?

  19. Jom, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.
What is your favorite EFC knife?

  20. Jim, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.
What is your favorite EDC knife?

  21. first let me take a moment to thank you and your loved ones for your service without it we may not be able to have this conversation, really, thank you. as a more or less inexperienced combatant i get somewhat concerned about using a knife in a fight. i understand that it may be an equalizer depending on my own (lack) of experience and a potential foes enjoyment he may get terrorizing “innocents”, do you have any advice on how a guy could prepare for that moment when steel might meet another human beings flesh? i just guess on a level of humanity im having trouble internalizing the fact that level of violence may become necessary and im having doubts concerning my ability to issue said violence. i hope this is not a stupid question….thanks for your time and thoughts

  22. What knife would you recommend for a woman who doesn’t carry purses and wears office attire?

  23. Jim, thanks for your service! I need to know the best way to grasp the knife.

    Thanks Again,
    Jim

  24. HEY JIM,
MY QUESTION IS : WHAT WOULD THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE LETHAL MOVE WITH A KNIFE BE FOR TAKING OUT AN ADVERSARY IF NEEDED?
I LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHING YOUR INTERVIEW ON YOUTUBE,
    JON H.

  25. Hey Jim,
First I want to thank you for serving our Country. I am glad that you are unharmed from your battles.
My thinking is, if one is attacked by someone with a knife that he or she should go for control of the knife first. The knife is the primary target.

  26. I am an avid knife collector. I carry at least two knives on a daily basis. I believe in the two is one, one is none adage. My question is.. what, in your opinion is the best type of knife to carry? Folder or fixed blade? And do you have a preferred brand of knife that you typically carry?

  27. do you know of any better OTF auto knives other than those made by Microtech. I have carried one for several years and am always on the look to upgrade if possible

  28. Hello I just wanted to say hi to a true American hero and vet. I appreciate your service. I’m a vet also but nothing compared to you. You have my respect and honor. Thank you again for your
    service.

  29. My question is, what is the most effective way to sharpen and maintain your knife so it’s always ready to go. How do you test the sharpness of your knife to know it’s where it should be.

    Regards,

    Brent Hamelin

  30. I have a few knives that I’ve acquired and most from this site. In your opinion what is the best way to keep a nice neat and super sharp blade? I drive a big truck for a living and from time to time I have some extra time on my hands and we both know most knives don’t have a nice sharp blade until it’s been worked with. I’ll try to be on hand and look for my answer. Also I also thank you for your service. Mine was so long ago it really doesn’t add up to a hill of beans compared to all you’ve done! Thank you Sir!!

  31. What is the most important aspect in dealing with a knife-wielding opponent before, during and after a confrontation?

Thank you for your service to our country. You are truly appreciated.

  32. I/m disabled now 6 years with a disease called Dystonia. It take control of the muscles in your neck, shoulder, and right arm. My right thumb is spasmed shut,so hand to hand would not be an option. To be honest I do not have a question for you. Just much respect! Also the gratitude every American citizen should have for those who protect our country. If I were to have a question it would be: Do heroes, such as yourself, and all who have served get treated with disdain like the media points out by ignorant, clueless people, who’s lives depend on you? Again Much Thanx for what you do!

  33. This is not about knives but, do you have any tips for Solo Survivalists. I recognized that not being part of a team can represent its own unique challenges. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  34. I want to know how far can you really be from your target and hit it every time you throw your knife? Cause I can’t make my knife stick in my target at more than 6to7 feet at a time and that’s to close for confert for me! Thanks Randy

  35. Which knife do you prefer more, U.S. Army Rangers Bowie knife, or the U.S. Marine Corps K-Bar knife?

  36. Thank you sir for being in the armed forces and thank you for your time in service. I also am a vet. and have a question to ask you. What is the best knife steel in production today that covers all the bases for an “all purpose” knife and what shape of blade do you recommend? Thank you for your time and effort.

  37. I’m 78 and try to stay in shape; I run a 5k 3 times a week; how do I best protect myself and my wife, without a gun? I don’t need the noise, but do own a 1938 red Ryder BB gun! Ha, Ha I know it sounds like a joke, but it still penetrates a beer can! I’m concerned that having an American flag provokes the crazies! Can you offer advice?? Much appreciated! E. M. Lewis

  38. No questions Mr. West. Just wanted to thank you for keeping myself and my family safe and free.

  39. hello, as one vet to another thanks, the real problem is a legal one, most states allow a blade length of 6″ or less, so the obstacle is while walking around town enjoying a meal. or, a routine traffic stop, could possibly change the situation from self-defense to a legal one, this
country is based on equality, but we all know that is more of an ideal concept, therefore some people have a higher chance to be pulled over, or, frisked, at some point it will happen to everyone, every city, state, and township may have different laws in place, so stealth is the primary goal, and many people love to see a fight, watch, purchase pay-per-view, but not many either are comfortable, or, are confident enough to be involved in one, there will be blood, you will probably be cut and need stitches, but you will be alive, and that is what really counts, it’s not like in the movies; so how can these various obstacles be navigated, and still have the proper tool for the job.

    thanks, tony

  40. Jim what things need to go in a bug out bag and how long should I prepare for. I have to supply to bags. Thanks.

  41. Thank you for your service in keeping our freedoms alive. Without men and women like yourself our way of life would be only a thought and a piece of paper. Thank you for all you have done in the name of our country!
