Jim West Will Be Here To Talk About Knives

Hey, FightFast Hotlist:

Our good friend Jim West (official U.S. Special Forces badass) is going to be here in the FightFast studios on August 22 through the 24th. This is going to be fun and instructive as he’ll be fielding questions from our hotlist. We’re concentrating on knives and defending yourself with a blade, but you can ask anything you want.

So, if you’d like to partake in the action, leave your questions in the comments section below. We’re going to ask him the top 50 questions submitted (minus any repeats), so submit your questions right away.

While he’s here, West will also do some hands-on demonstrations with our very popular Black Ops knife, along with another “secret weapon” we haven’t revealed to the public yet. We will also be giving away a FREE GIFT during the live event. It’ll be a random draw from anyone who submitted a question.

Watch Live

You can watch this question and answer interview LIVE. Here’s how:

  1. Subscribe to our YouTube channel by going to YouTube and searching for “FightFast”. Once you’ve found our channel, simply click the “Subscribe” button.
  2. The interview with Jim will take place on the last day, Wednesday August, 24th at 10 AM Pacific standard time.

Submit Your Questions Now!

It isn’t often that you can shoot the breeze with a U.S. Special Forces combat vet. West has been in the thick of combat. He knows more about fighting—hand to hand and with a weapon—than just about anyone else on the planet.

So, submit your questions, subscribe to the FightFast YouTube channel, and then watch Jim West live on August 24. After the interview, we will announce the winner of the FREE GIFT. See you there!

For a safe life…

  1. Mr. West, Thank you for your courage and protecting us! What are your thoughts on the state of America and what should us Americans do to be prepared for the future?

  2. If you would recommend a pocket knife for knife fighting , what would be a good type that you would pick ?

  3. Paul Vunak goes for defanging your knife armed attacker by going after the hand or arm holding the weapon. Sounds good to me but what is your take?

  4. My question is about training on your own with a blade. Many of the exercises I have seen over the years tend to be ones in which you work out with a partner. However I seldom get someone to work out with. What are some skill training drills one can do on their own to gain usable skills?

  5. Mr. West,
First and foremost I want to thank you for all your service to this nation. It’s you, and the people like you who have made this country great. Thank -You for your service! And by the way your videos are the best. My question that I would like to ask is that in combat do you act or react. By that I mean in hand to hand combat do you have a plan or an idea as to what you are going to do, or do you just go with the flow and see what happens. I can see eather way as being disasterest. I can’t think of a better person to ask this question.

  6. First off, thank you for your service to our country and the brothers you fought beside.

I’d like to know is it better for a defensive stance or offensive stance as far as welding and edged weapon?

  7. Thank you for your service. I prefer knives and carry one in my purse. I work in a mental health clinic and unfortunately have been at the wrong end of a crisis situation where a gun is involved. I am an administrator and have to dress the part. What is the best way to conceal a knife when wearing a skirt and heels and what would be the ideal length?
Thank you again and God Bless.

  8. Mr West it’s a honor speaking with you im a big follower of yours thanks to the availability of your DVDS that are made available through Mr Pierces company.
My question ❓ is what is your best defense against multiple assailants both carrying weapons both knives

  9. how to defend yourself safely and successfully against someone who tries to stab you ?????

  10. SIR, I AM SEVERELY HANDICAPPED. WOULD YOU HAVE ANY ‘SPECIAL TIPS; FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS…..SEVERE ARTHRITIS, VERY BAD KNEES, COPD AND PARKINSON’S DISEASE, JUST TO NAME A FEW, (THERE ARE MORE).
I DO NOT PLAN ON JUST SITTING HERE AND DOING NOTHING. I AM VERY GOOD AT MAKING ‘OLD WORLD’ BOOBY TRAPS.

THANK YOU FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY.

I am a vet and Along with my training I also love to learn other things such as throwing a knife with your video I can actually throw a knife preety darn good. And the booby trap really works I just wanted to thank all of you for sharing knowledge

  12. Jim and Bob-

How can you “teach” someone situational awareness? I often find my wife or daughter just blindly walking through parking garages,
down the street or wherever without paying attention to their surroundings. I don’t want to come across rude or judgmental to
them, but sometimes I feel like that is what is needed. In the past I have been told to “leave your military back at the armory!”

I feel its best to avoid a problem before it becomes one when I’m out and about.

    Thanks brothers.

  13. Fifty year old widowed mother of six, so not so applicable to carry a huge knife. however, what size straight blade can I carry for self defense that will not be conspicuous in everyday situations? i.e.: store, walking track?

  14. I am only 5′ 3″ and my two boy’s are really small too. I would like to get the best way, to take and win a street fight ,for some one as small as we are. My 2 boy’s always are getting picked on for being so little. And getting bullied in school. and I’m really getting tired of it. I really would like to have a DVD with nothing but the best fighting moves for somebody small like we are. So what the best way to win a fight for some one like us?

  15. Hi Jim. Thank You for your service and doing this Q and A opportunity. Any training program recommendations for optimum performance under pressure? ie Making good/correct decisions and keeping your head in crisis situations, immediate and long term (martial law etc.). Fro one vet ( Tehran Crisis, Operation Eagle Claw ) to another Thanks again.

  16. I have a machete for clearing weeds from electric fence. It is a big knife and I keep it razor sharp. Looking at historical records, it seems similiar to
sabers which were used for slashing with calvary. I normally also carry a pocket knife with a3 inch blade. I keep it sharp too.I find that dull knives are
as they don’t cut, just catch and go who knows where. I am interested in your comments.

  17. I am a Navy veteran and thank you for your service. My question is does size and length apply with different situations,, if one did happen, we had a small folder and a fixed blade. Thanks

  18. First i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to protect our freedoms. i have 2 sons that served 2 tours in the recent wars that have TBI and PTSD. what knife would you suggest for self defense and survival ?

  19. If you lived in a country where you could not carry a gun or knife for self defense (like the U.K) what weapon would you carry to defend yourself. (against single or multiple attackers)

  20. fix blide over a quick release blide every day carrie. best boot carrie knife. Is it a folony to carrie a double edged blade like a jungle toothpic if so even if you have acurrent ccp Thanks Tim

  21. Tim Sir if ever, would you choose flight over fight ? Please give any examples if so. One more question , once I had a friend that had a knife pulled on him. I was at the end of the alley and seen this . He froze ,the guy had the blade up pointing in his face. I don’t know why I started looking for any thing I could us for a weapon , close at hand , There was a some bricks laying along a wall , so I picked up two of them and started to walk towards the man with his knife still in my friends face. I was throwing one of the bricks up in the air and catching it in my hand, Told the guy when I got about 10 yards from him, if he wanted to play come play with me… once he seen I had two bricks he put his knife away and he said didn’t want to play.. So my buddy got the hell out of there, And I watched as the fellow with the knife left the other way.. So was it stupid to look for a weapon like my bricks, or large stick or board , any thing you think you could fined to find off a knife? Thank you , God bless you an all our vets, men an women serving in our armed forces .

  22. MY QUESTION FOR JIM IS:

WHICH DO U FEEL, BASED ON UR EXPERIENCE, IS A MORE DANGEROUS WEAPON TO FACE OFF AGAINST – A GUN OR A KNIFE?

    THX, CHRIS K.

  23. How does this new knife compare to the k bar and is the K Bar as good as it used to be?
Is the best or one or the best ways of using the weapon by holding the knife with the blade under the forearm?
Thank you & God bless you for your service

  24. How do you survive an assailant coming at you from behind with a low knife thrust to the kidneys or through the back to the liver? This happened to me and though I took him out, I had a lacerated kidney.

  25. I have heard that many fights are decided in the first few seconds of interaction. There is also the problem, for the normal individual, of ‘freezing up’ in a new situation. How does one train themselves to skip past the freeze-up, other than going out and getting into a lot of fights?

  26. What tactics do you recommend for a disabled veteran that needs walking assistance devices…(can, Walker, wheelchair, scooter, etc)?

  27. Hi Jim, knives scare the hell out of me. I’m learning this skill for that reason. I need to be able to protect myself if such occasision should arrise. What goes thru your mind when you are in a life or death situation? How do you not be afraid of a crazy guy swinging a knife at you?

  28. Hi, I know in today’s world it is imperative that people know how to protect themselves. However, I am not 20 years old any more. In fact, I am a 60 year old female. I have purchased items such as stun guns and mace for personal protection. I know this is better than nothing, but what types of personal defense would you suggest to women my age, to protect ourselves against home invasions? Or if we are caught off guard and don’t have the time to instantly grab our stun gun or mace? I am in good health, still physically active, but as I said, I’m not 20 any more, and thugs are usually younger males, so what can you suggest for women like me?

    Thank you

  29. Is it true that it is safer to NOT have your knife “facing forward” when holding it in a fight, but to have the blade facing backwards along your forearm (with a single edge of course)?

2nd question, if allowed- what is the best “stance” or approach to have if you have a knife in on hand and a “in between the fingers” dagger in the other hand in a hand to hand combat?

And THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY!!!! GOD BLESS YOU SIR!!!!

  30. Hello Jim,

While realizing that every confrontation is unique, I wonder if you have used more instinctively than not, a favorite diversion technique to get in close and overcome a knife welding opponent. If so, would you share it? Thanks for your service to our country, and GOD Bless America!

  31. How long should a good defensive knife be? What type tip is best? Is it better for a novice to try to injure so escape is possible or serious injury better?

  32. Age 74, walks with collapsible metal cane, hard rubber handle, 3 prong rubber bottom; best way to survive knife attack?

  33. What is the best way to carry a 3.5 inch spring assist folding tactical knife from a concealed carry for quick access. I don’t like to have the clip showing on the edge of my pocket and having the knife inside the waist is a little
    uncomfortable

  34. I am disabled with serious back issues and a shoulder replacement done improperly on my dominant arm. I’ve seen only a couple moves I could do without losing the battle due to the pain I would be in just executing the majority of the ones I seen. I would like to see some defense/attack moves with my condition in mind (and I’m sure there’s got to be others) that could be done without crumbling on the ground from executing the moves. I know each case is different but to get the knowledge for a few that could mean I was able to take care of the situation without me being hospitalized or worse.

  35. Hey Jim and Bob, I have a “safety Knife” from where I had worked. It’s about 8 1/2 inches long. I had ground down the “flat” safety edge to a very sharp point and with a point like a dagger. Are there any requirements for “Lengths” of knife to be legal or Illegal? I live in Georgia and had heard that a knife over a certain length is illegal but don’t remember what the length is. I have a knife sheath (actually a leather sheath for Needle Nose or other tools) that I put it in and in the side pocket of my coveralls. Is it legal to carry out in the open or do I need to either get a smaller knife or just leave it at home and carry a fold-able knife in my front pockets? And what about a “Rambo” knife that’s big and long with serrated edge and a sharp blade on the front or cutting and slicing side? What kind are legal to carry in Public?

  36. Hello Jim, thanks for your service and when an attacker goes boxing or lunging and coming quick at you, when do you decide when to put techniques in transition? UNFORTUNATELY, I will be working and will be back to check replay. Have a good one,?
