Bad News: Most Criminals Get Away With It

Does Crime Pay?

Polite society likes to ignore some simple facts associated with crime. Take this one for example; We are raised hearing the mantra that “crime doesn’t pay.” Wrong. Crime does pay. It pays pretty well too.

Some might say it’s one of the best-kept secrets in personal finance, except it’s not a secret. It’s just a fact that makes a lot of folks uncomfortable, so they pretend it’s not true. So what’s my point? Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting you quit your day job and go knock off a liquor store.

Here’s The Real Lesson

If every criminal got caught the first or even second time they committed a crime, we would very quickly have them all locked up! The reality is that only the bad or unlucky criminals get caught and locked up, and many of those that do get locked up use prison as a place to hone their skills.

Once they’re back on the street, they are even more skilled. That means that if you are targeted by a criminal you must assume you’re going up against a pro. You are more than likely NOT their first victim. They have a plan, they know how to get what they want, and they even know how to get away with it.

They Feed On Our Fear

Frankly, they’re used to winning. Most people shrink when faced with a hardened criminal (or any criminal for that matter). Fearing for their safety, they nervously give the criminal what they want. Criminals thrive off the fear of violence. Violence is their business and they know it pretty well.

If you are reading this then this probably isn’t new information, but it’s easy (even for those of us who aren’t naïve about crime) to get lulled into a false sense of security. The completely naïve think that they are pretty much safe all the time.

Overconfidence Can Work Against You

Others think that because they are aware of crime and have thought about what they would do (maybe they even carry a self-defense weapon) that they are prepared. I’m not here to pass judgment on anyone, but there is a fine line between confidence and a dangerous level of over-confidence.

Remember, many criminals are very good at what they do. You need to train to survive a confrontation with a pro, not a beginner. You have to train to beat the best, so take your defensive training seriously.

Ask Yourself This

If you carry a weapon, when was the last time you trained in drawing and deploying it? Weapon or not, when was the last time you threw a few punches? Do you know how to transition from a weapon to bare hands in case of a malfunction (for firearms) or loss of control of an edged or blunt-force weapon?

Even masters have to go through the motions to keep their skills sharp, so set aside some time each week to practice. Keep your skills sharp, because when it hits the fan you never really know what you’re going up against. You could be facing anything from a rookie who’s all talk or a seasoned pro, and you definitely do NOT want to find out which you are facing the hard way.

  1. Criminals at the bottom steal hundreds and thousands. Criminals at the top steal millions and billions. Crime has always paid. Hand to hand combat training, weapons training and situational awareness training are what I try to stay on top of.

  2. Absolutely true. The smartest crooks are the ones who move around and so don’t get caught! And practice makes perfect!!

  3. Until there is MASSIVE prison reform….and our judicial system gets the same reformation as well….this ‘dog chasing it’s tail’ scenario will continue. Having said that, I do believe we will begin to see armed citizens starting to take their neighborhoods back. People can only take so much. It could get ugly.

  4. Thanks for this post Bob. It was a reminder that I need to train with weapons I do have, and consider picking up another one or two. As a driver I have to be aware of my surroundings at all times. Are there any videos for self-defense when you’re in a vehicle?

  5. I agree with you. Every should be very much aware of the now existing dangers and be prepared to handle most situations. I spent nearly 45 years as a law enforcement and know what you mean. I inmersed myself in martial arts, just about any type ever since my childhood, I am 78 years old and the older I become the more I realize that being prepared and ready is not a hobby but a need nowadays. Most oF the punks keep training themselves constantly. Crime is an act of violence that occurs at anytime, because it is an act of opportunity and desire. Women and elders are common targets. So therefore I agree 100% with you. I am always looking to learn more to defense myself and my loved ones and those in need of assistance. Keep it up Bob you are in the right track.

  6. I highly appreciate your dedication to inform as many individuals that you can. You’re very well aware of reality and offers a good choice of responses. Thanks you for putting it out there.

  7. Very good advise to keep people on their toes and stay fit and ready for any situation. Practice makes perfect.

  8. I’ve always been into Weight Training and Martial Arts. Nowadays I keep up my Boxing Fitness classes. In the UK I reckon that’s the best solution.

  9. I honestly believe that MORE THAN 50% of crimes would end IF “HOODIES” WE’RE OUTLAWED!! You don’t need a HOODIE to keep your ears warm–you can use wool pullovers! Keep on doing what you’re doing and STAY IN CONDITION YELLOW!!

  10. I couldn’t agree more…You must attain a certain mind set, and keep it. Being an X-con, I will only say that criminals will always have an upper hand if you are not instantly prepared as they will be.

  11. I do carry weapons for self defense but you are right. Always be prepared for anything. If you are not thinking several steps ahead you are most likely going to end up a victim at the mercy of someone who has none.
Train yourself to react quickly because if you have to think about your next move you have already lost the fight.

  12. ALL THESE COMMENTS INCLUDING YOUR THOUGHTS HAVE MADE ME REALIZE THAT AT 79 THIS JUNE AND NEVER HAD ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING MAKES IT ESSENTIAL I GET CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT. CALIFORNIA NOT WITHSTANDING.

  13. Lots of practical advice. Train today and hope you do not need to deploy your skills tomorrow….but you will be ready.

  14. As my Krav Maga instructors say, criminals don’t have an alternate plan. They have an alternate victim. Keep your head on a swivel!

  15. I sleep with my 9 mm, next to my bed, and a 12 gauge near the hallway door, and my concealed 38 when in public, so far i’ve not had any problem, and hope i don”t, but, i will not hesitate to use any gun to protect my family and myself from the punks and thugs in and aroud my neighborhood. I live away from town in a somewhat isolated area.

  16. I trained almost every day growing up in a bad neighborhood. Now I am disabled so I conceal carry and use a fighting cane.

  17. Before I filled out the comment section I watched a few of your videos and read the comments of others. I believe we need all the training we can get and should practice it when ever possible. I have lived among a large number of the harden criminals and they don’t care what happens to you. Keep the gun handy but also learn some counter moves should you loose control of it. I am 70 years old and need all the advantages I can get.

  18. Great advice. Treat every villain as a seasoned fighter. The law protects the guilty.Never give up. Use every means possible if attacked.Show no mercy. Listen to Bob Pierce.

  19. As a former LEO I can attest to the accuracy of your article. The fact that our population density is growing and the change in our society from what it was a few years ago means that we are each more likely to encounter a criminal that would like to turn us into a vicktem. Therefore the training you provide is increasingly more valuable. Thanks and keep up the good work. Never, never give up.

  20. Remember about 15 to 20 years ago a thief used the home owners because he got injured doing his professional job and won the court case because he couldn’t do it anymore how’s that for ya

  21. True but when you live in a country where the law gets in the way of justice.sir fuck tard decides to sodomomize an 8 year old and the first thing is make sure all of its rights are in order.oh and God forbid you do the right thing basically this site is the right thing next thing you know you’re sharing a shower with Jesus and Mustapha thereon lies the problem.or you can get with any cop u.s.a who can show you every drug house but that would be entrapment.

  22. Hi – I agree with you completely – my husband and I are both pass our sell by dates and me and invalid to boot – it really put strain on the old man. we have a very good friend – Soke Henri Eksteen – who also try and convince the folks around here to – if not his DoJo any other one to learn self-defense – but you know how it is “it only happen to other people not me”. Keep up the good work

  23. I have been locked up in prison and have seen them practice mugging techniques! I have also heard them talking about what potential victoms to leave alone! Even the hardened pros will leave a unstable victom alone because they can’t predict what the individual that’s talking to themselves will do next!!!! So when walking by yourself and to or more start to follow you start talking to yourself and waving your arms around!! It will save your life 9 times out of 10!!

  24. Id like to suggest if you ARE going to use a weapon, also try something like a neck knife, peraonally i made an easily unlatched necklace with a triangle blade on it. The nice thing about these weapons is they generally are very easily hidden, and can come as a quick retort. However, you cant always plan for a fight, so if someone were to come from behind theres still the chance of being taken of-guard. My suggestion, take a hint from old vets. Use corners of the room, avoid open areas and for the love of hades, be aware of your surroundings.

  25. Thanks for advice but I’ve done prison, and I’ve done self defence and I train 5 days a week I studied certain martial arts as I’ve lost my left leg below knee so I try and find out other ways to be more productive whilst living each day as it comes. I’ve watched and learned other things along the way, but people who don’t go looking for trouble, seem to know how to get out of it, where as others think that they can handle themselves and in reality they haven’t a clue, but watching some of Bob Pierce’s stuff is quite interesting and I like to see other peoples techniques , maybe even throw them into some of my own moves. Always be alert, as you have to stay on top of things as when you become lazy, everything else becomes lazy. And there is always someone who’s quicker. So staying in shape is key.

  26. I agree never underestimate a criminal they are desperate one needs to be always alret and always ready wheter you carry a weapon or not

  27. You are right those who commit violent crimes and go to prison are better prepared to commit more violent crimes. That’s why I am taking my self defense Krav Maga class. And with your self-defense lessons and videos I will be better prepared to do the job that needs to be done. Thank you and everyone at Fight Fast for your help. This is much appreciated.

  28. This was a good article and makes you think about several things. One of my gripes is our judicial system. Sometimes I think the criminal has more rights than the victim.

  29. Great comments, I love it.
All should read Lt. Col. Grossman’s writings on, “Wolves, Sheep, and Sheepdogs”.

  30. In order to stay safe and out of trouble a person must know hat action he is going y to take if he is attacked. If you feel you will be attacked your probably thinking what is the first thing I am going to do to defend myself. Think about doing something very horrible to start with. Because that is what he is thinking about attacking you. Try keeping some distance not his first move. Then you attack and hurt him. Hurt him quick and violenthe. He stacted it make him pay. Ithe doese not have to last long. Use an army bar or kick him betweven the legs or grab his balls and squeeze. If he is not done but down kick him in thevery chest or neck or face, Draw blood and check for your safety frome someone else. Not many people see there friend get hurt and bleeding and stick around

  31. Lot of watsto deal with that border defense on tripwire with homemade ingrediants purchased from store or close physical kidney punch from backside

  32. You have great knowledge I have not been to the range for 6 months or more and I have not practice my knife throwing. And in my neighborhood cars have been broke into now they are hitting the houses. And I have a shotgun for close range and have not shot that for over a year! I just want to say thank you and everyone in your company.

  33. I will join any-organization that will put up a website with the names and addresses of all gun grabbers, including politicians. They need to know there are consequences for trying to destroy our 2nd Amendment rights.

  34. Hopefully they won’t come here. There could be a very nasty surprise for them in the form of … well, we can’t say right now.

  35. Unfortunately, this is very true. And i agree wholeheartedly that if you dont practise, even doing it mentally is better than nothing. But you might as well put on good running shoes when you go out, if you dont practice. You might have a better chance that way.

  36. you must be prepared to commit a greater level of violence than the criminal.practice going from nice to nasty with and without a weapon so you are better prepared.do not hesitate to strike with force, they will if given a chance.keep up the good work, love this site.

  37. Believe me, I never leave home without the SPIKE, the Knife TSR, the flashlight and a firearm, being a retired law enforcement officer. The thing we all must do is to try to stop the SHTF. I want to be prepared as it is better than not being prepared, but to stop the 5 largest banks placing bets, derivatives, without the money to cover it. One bad bet and the country is back in the GREAT DEPRESSION! Somehow, we all must pull together to have them legally bound to have their own money to cover these bets, or stop them altogether.

  38. Unfortunately there aren’t enough prison to put all these criminals away, and I’m sure that the people don’t want to pay anymore of their hard earned money to build more. I’ve arrested several drug dealers who are back on the streets the next day. They’re allowed to pay a small fine and be on their way. Until the drug cartels are eliminated and the people demanding these drugs stop, the thefts will continue. And as far as are weapons being taken from us, we have politicians who want to control you, this needs to be put to a stop.

  39. THE STATE OF JEFFERSON IS UNLIKE OTHER STATES, COMPRISED OF (40% +) SENTIENT RETIRED
LUSAC MILITARY PERSONS ! WE PROTECT SELF & OURS & DREAMING PERPS MUST BRING THEIR OWN MORTICIANS & BB’S OR BECOME WOLF & BUZZARD BAIT ! WE PRACTICE W/EXPERIENCE &
ARE AWARE & INSURED FROM LAWSUITS. WE TRAIN OUR PROGENY & FRIENDS TO ACT.
YOUR INSIGHTS & PRODUCTS ARE THE “REAL THINGS”, BEST AVAILABLE. GOD BLESS THE USA !

  40. i just started a martial arts class, i work out ,practice, train every day 30 to 60 minutes with bare hands & various weapons, & i,m a fairly decent shot with both pistol & long gun, but i never take any of it for granted because i’ve always believed no matter how good you think you are there’s always some one better
